I was ready for bed one night. As I planned to turn off the lamp on my bedside table, my eyes fell on the card my brother had given me on our dad’s sixty-eightli birthday. It was a musical card with a photo of Dad smiling
inside. When you opened it, a recording of Dad’s songs would play. The card just stood beside my bed.
My dad was a joyful man with a big heart. He always went above and beyond. When my house was on fire a few years ago, it burned down. Luckily, all the family members were safe. Dad took it upon himself to make things right. He called everyone he knew to raise the money for rebuilding the house. In the meantime, I, my husband and
our four kids moved into his house.
There was one thing that I loved most about Dad: his singing voice. When I was growing up, he was always singing us songs like the ones recorded in the card. It always made us laugh. Part of the fun for us kids was that,
despite his wonderfully deep voice, Dad sang songs to share joy. I could always pick out his voice from the crowd.
With those in my mind, I turned off the light and quickly fell asleep. I was awoken a few hours later by a loud sound. Dad’s voice was filling the room. It was from the card! I jumped out of bed, closing the card before the whole house woke up. How did that card start playing I thought. I checked the windows in my bedroom. I found a
window was left open. It must be the wind that blew the card open.
Then I heard a little noise. It seemed that the noise came from the laundry room (洗衣房). We lived on a farm and raised a dozen baby chicks. Too young to be outside, the chicks were in a plastic bin in our laundry room,
under the warnith of a heat lamp. I opened the door to the laundry room and was hit with the smell of smoke.
Paragraph 1:
The heat lamp had fallen, hitting into the bin!
Paragraph 2:
Fortunately, the fire was put out at last.

It was a dream born in fire. Andrea Peterson was 5 when she was trapped on the ledge (窗台) of a burning
building.
“Throw the kid down!” said one of the firemen below, whose eyes are firm and courageous, along with professional rescue techniques. Seeing this, little Andrea jumped into lifesaving arms and a life-long ambition: She
wanted to fight fires as her rescuers did.
She told that to the men who had saved her, and they laughed naturally the way grown-ups do when a kid says he wants to be an astronaut or a sports star. But this was back in a time when little girls weren’t even allowed to
fantasize (幻想) about such grand goals.
“You’ll be a good mommy,” the firemen told her. “You’ll be a good teacher, maybe you’ll be a nurse, but you
can never be a fireman.”
Indeed, life sidelined her ambitious dream. She was studying for a degree in aviation technology (航空科技) and that’s where she met her husband, Dennis. Unfortunately, Dennis was diagnosed with cancer. Peterson spent 31 years caring for the man she loved, and in 2007, when Dennis was about to leave, he was at peace but worried for
her. “But what are you going to do ” “I’ll be fine,” she told him.
At 61, she attended a course for emergencies. She went on an ambulance ride-along from time to time. It turned out to be a life-and-death situation, which reminded her of the childhood experience back in the fire. But every time she saw people who were in need were successfully rescued, Peterson felt that long-ago childhood calling. She earned her emergency medical technician license and responded to fire calls with the ambulance. She
found that her years of tending to Dennis had prepared her for dealing with the variety of hurts and ills. The inside
calling echoed increasingly stronger.

My cousin Allen was the coolest person in all of Minneapolis. By the age of 19, he was a star football player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be just like him. So when Allen asked me to join him on a spring fishing
trip in northern Minnesota, I said yes!
After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies and then set off on our adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest by early evening. On the way to our campsite, Allen pointed to a small house faraway in
one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the foresters worked.
Allen knew all the tricks of an experienced camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest floor, he started the campfire using only stone and steel, no matches. After a day of travelling, we were very hungry. We ate
beef and rice and some soup as well.
Exhausted, we crawled into our sleeping bags early. Allen was still talking about his past camping adventures when a sudden wind picked up from the north. The temperature dropped and it began to snow. Allen knew of a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log from the woods, wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log and then placed it near the campfire. The heat from the fire reflected into the tent. Soon the tent was warm
again and thoughts of lake fish filled my dreams.
I was still dreaming when Allen woke me up in a panic. Our tent was on fire! The snow had stopped during the night, but the wind had fanned the flames of the fire towards our tent. Frightened by the flames, I ran out of the
tent immediately. The tent collapsed with Allen inside. Without any hesitation, I reached into the burning tent,
grabbed him, and dragged him to the icy lake. We checked each other to make sure neither of us was hurt.

It was my birthday that day, and my grandfather gave me a gift—a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get the money was to break the piggy hank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea. And he added. “The piggy bank would help save your money so that, at the end of the year, you might have enough for that
bike you dreamed about.” He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed
immediately and promised sincerely, “I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.”
Whenever my grandfather gave me some pocket money, he would say, “This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.” When he gave me larger amounts, it was clear for me to save the extra money in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy hank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike,
and all the adventures I could have on it.
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful presents. I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about buying those things went away. So for almost three years. I had only put money into the piggy hank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy hank for anything. Bat one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces. I was sleepless that night. Staring at my
piggy bank. I was thinking about what I could do with it.

When I worked as a nurse, I was on day duty while my workmates were on night duty. On one shift, I sensed something just before going off duty at 11 am. I put down the tray(托盘) on the table and suddenly it fell off the table. At first I thought I had accidentally knocked it over, but then I felt the whole building shaking and heard
patients were screaming.
I realized that an earthquake was happening. I quickly caught hold of a nearby patient, who was terribly frightened and pushed her under a bed. And then, I got under another bed myself. As soon as the earthquake stopped, I decided to try and get the patient safely outside. I carried her out and helped her down to the grassland,
where several other people had gathered.
Afraid that my other workmates were in danger, I went back inside the building again. When I met Lucy ,our ward sister(护士长), I found her patient couldn't walk. We made a seat for the patient by linking our hands and arms, and carried her outside together. We went back through the building to check no one was left behind in our
ward(病房) .
Just then, we saw that a man doctor was calling for volunteers to go down to other wards with him to help more people. So we went together. The doctor went ahead of us and found one of the nurses partially covered with
rubble(碎石),luckily still alive. Suddenly, the aftershock (余震)struck and the doctor ordered us to leave. The

As Hurricane Lan bore down on Florida, many residents who stayed put found themselves unable to leave even if they tried. For hours they were forced to fight heavy winds and attempt to escape flooding inside long-loved homes that had become frightening, deadly traps. Within days, around 100 deaths in the state would be attributed to
the hurricane, many of them were older residents who drowned.
When the water slipped in under the door of their home, it was just a glimmer on the floor, a sign that it was time to go. It was Wednesday, Sept.28, around noon, and Bishop woke up her two brothers, who had been resting after lunch. She pulled the wheelchair up to the oldest, Russell, 67. Her other brother, Todd, 63, could manage with
a walker.
Both men had been born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫), and their mental development was like that of a young child. About 10 years ago, they started showing signs of Parkinson’s disease. But they found joy in their surroundings. Todd liked collecting cans at the beach. Russell loved riding the bus and going to parks. Bishop, 61,
was their lifeline, their little sister who had long felt an obligation to keep them safe.
“We’ve got to get going!” she shouted to them. She went to open the front door. It would not move. The weight of the water on the other side had made it shut. She rushed to try the door to the garage. It, too, was stuck. That’s when the house began to flood. It went from ankle-deep to knee-deep in less than five minutes. Bishop knew
that there was no way out.
Now Bishop and her brothers were trapped. At 12:34 p.m., she called 911 but couldn’t get through. There was no one she could get in touch with. To try her fortune, she texted a neighbor, Walters, who was always there when
neighbors were in need, “Water’s coming in.” Around her, she could hear the dining room hutch (餐具柜) tipping
and crashing, the china breaking, the refrigerator toppling over.

Frog is a wise and brave frog, living happily with his neighbors as well as good friends – Duck, Pig, Hare and Rat. One day, dark clouds were gathering in the sky, hiding the sun from view. “It’s going to rain,” thought Frog happily. The first drops were already falling on his bare skin. Frog loved the rain. He danced for joy as the
raindrops fell thick and fast, which was a bit too much even for Frog.
He ran home dripping wet and made himself a nice hot cup of tea. The raindrops pattered against the window but it was cozy inside. After three days of rain however, Frog began to feel restless. He wondered how his friends
were, because he hadn’t seen them since the rain started.
On the fifth day, the river began to rise. It wasn’t long before water came streaming into Frog’s house. Full of worry, he hurried over to Duck’s house only to find it was flooded as well. Wading ( 蹚) through the watery landscape, they decided to go to Pig’s house. Pig was leaning out of his attic (阁楼) window. “All my things are wet,” he cried desperately. The room was in a mess, with tables and chairs floating around. “Let’s go and see
Hare,” suggested Frog.
Hare’s house was on an island in the middle of the water. Hare stood at the door and waved to them. “Come inside,” he shouted. “It’s dry in here.” Gratefully, they dried themselves in front of the stove and told Hare how
their houses had been flooded. Hare invited them to stay as there’s plenty of room and plenty of food in the house.
So they all sat down to a big pot of stew (炖菜) Hare had made. So hungry were they that they ate everything up.
Then they settled down to a cosy evening and stayed there for days, while outside it kept raining.

It was a long weekend in May 2018 and my friend, Gabe Rosescu, and I were taking a road trip from my home in the city of Weyburn to visit friends in Nelson, British Columbia. We are both adventurous, and we couldn’t wait
to go hiking and exploring. It was our first trip together since we knew each other.
At around 10:30 am on Thursday, May 17, we were driving about 11 miles west of Creston, on a steep mountain road known as the Crowsnest Highway. I was texting updates to my family and enjoying the view. We
weren’t aware there’d recently been flooding in the area.
When I looked up from my phone, I saw a wave of mud and an enormous tree rolling down the mountain,
right in front of Gabe’s car. He tried to stop the car, but it was too late.
I looked at Gabe and we both were in great panic. The mudslide sent our car falling nearly 300 meters down a
rocky cliff. It landed on its side among some trees.
I don’t know how long we were unconscious(失去知觉的), but I woke up to Gabe’s voice with pain. He was
slumped(瘫倒) over the steering wheel, and there was blood everywhere. Outside my passenger window there was
a steep drop.
Every time I moved, I was hit with violent chest pain. I had broken my sternum, and my right ankle was broken and practically turned backward. Gabe had broken his orbital bone, and nasal and cheek bones. His head was badly hurt and his vision was damaged. But the body is an amazing thing, and somehow we were both able to
crawl out of that car.
I was so focused on our survival that I didn’t notice how seriously the car was damaged or where we were. We had no phone signal, so all we could think to do was yell for help. But my chest hurt too much to even breathe. So
Gabe started shouting as loud as he could.

Cheemi was a poor orphan living in Pune. Nobody knew where she had come from. Yet everyone accepted the
frail little girl and named her Cheemi — the little sparrow. She helped people by doing odd jobs for them, such as
fetching vegetables from the corner shop or looking after babies when their mothers went shopping.
Everybody in the neighbourhood liked Cheemi, except Kelly. Kelly was the richest woman there. Cheemi, in her eyes, was dirty and inferior to her. Therefore, she would not allow Cheemi into her big house. The house was almost like a mansion with big wooden carved doors and huge halls. Surprisingly, the windows of the rooms
decorated with beads and curtains were very small.
Kelly lived with her son, her daughter-in-law Gina and her little grandson, Carl. Carl was a great favourite with the girls. Gina was a very nice, educated lady and didn’t mind Carl being carried by others. Kelly, however,
never allowed Cheemi to touch Carl. How Cheemi wished she could play with him!
That year, Panshet Dam collapsed and the waters of the Mutha river, near Pune, had entered the city. The
water rose fast. There was confusion everywhere. Police vans were trying to help.
When water entered their house, Kelly and Gina were on the ground floor. Within seconds the water rose. The police persuaded Kelly and Gina to climb to the top floor. In the hurry and confusion, they forgot that Carl was
sleeping on the first floor!
The staircases were flooded. It was impossible to get to the bedroom on the first floor. The door to the room was closed but not bolted(闩上). Any moment the water could rush in. The women panicked. “Carl!” they cried.
“What will happen to our Carl ”

My cousin Allen was the coolest person in all of Minneapolis. By the age of 19, he was a star football player at
the University of Minnesota.

【答案】
Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our difficult situation. Our campsite was
in the deep of the forest, really far away from the highway. We were in the middle of nowhere, wearing only
underwear, with our supplies burnt into ashes, including our cellphones. Even Allen was unsure what to do next.
The only thing we could do was just sit in the cold air and wonder how to get out of the forest.
Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest. Anxiously we listened and stared into the darkness. A jeep appeared. A forester had spotted the light from the fire and had come to have a check. We jumped into the warm vehicle and the forester drove us to the ranger station, where we were given clothes and were able to call our parents. Allen and I had many more camping adventures from then on, but it was on this trip that Allen began to treat me more like a
friend rather than a younger cousin. Our friendship continues to this day.

It was my birthday that day, and my grandfather gave me a gift—a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get the money was to break the piggy hank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea. And he added. “The piggy bank would help save your money so that, at the end of the year, you might have enough for that bike you dreamed about.” He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed
immediately and promised sincerely, “I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.”

The
brave doctor intended to stay alone and risk his own life to save the nurse.

It was Wednesday, Sept.28, around noon, and Bishop woke up her two brothers, who had been resting
after lunch.

The only way to go was up, so Bishop guided her two bothers to the stairs. First she helped Todd pull himself
slowly up to the second floor, where he waited in a chair. But stairs were impossible for Russell, who could not

he was slipping and sliding.
Bishop sank into despair, but she noticed it seemed water stopped coming in. Looking outside, everywhere she
saw it was water, and she could even see cars floating by. “Thank God, the wind and the rain stopped.” At around
6:30 p.m, Bishop heard a familiar voice calling outside, “Hello ! Hello ! Anyone in ” It was Walters. Standing in waist-deep water, Walters instructed two of his friends to paddle the canoes near. Bishop held her brothers tightly

Suddenly the police discovered that one of the bedroom windows was open, but it was too small for an adult to
crawl in. Only a child could. But no one was willing to let their children take the risk.
