Skeikampen
Skeikampen has been attracting cross-country skiers since 1895, although the resort’s first ski lift was built in 1959. Hafjell
Back in 1994, Norway successfully hosted the Winter Olympics in nearby Lillehammer. Many of the downhill ski races were held on the slopes of Hafjell. It’s now the third largest ski resort in Norway. Not only does it offer 47 kilometres of ski slopes and several parks, it also has something called SkiMovie, a slope that’s equipped with automatic timing and filming equipment to document your highlights.
Norefjell
Just one and a half hours’ drive from the capital city of Oslo, Norefjell hosted the alpine skiing events at the 1952 Winter Olympics. With Northern Europe’s largest vertical descent (垂直下落) of 1, 010m, you may get lucky and enjoy the heights (when you are above the clouds) over the valley. You may have never seen a dodo bird in your lifetime. Driven to extinction on the island of Mauritius in 1692, the species has become a thing of the past. But it could soon be brought back to life.
A company called Colossal Biosciences, which has offices in Austin, plans to “de-extinct” the species alongside some other well-known extinct species, the woolly mammoth (长毛象) and Tasmanian tiger. According to the company, all three will be de-extinct within the next decade.
The dodo bird was a giant flightless pigeon (鸽子) on the island of Mauritius. The island, off the east coast of Africa, was visited by sailors in the early 1600’s. When the sailors arrived there, they would walk around the island and knock the heads of the dodos because there was nothing else to do on the island. By 1692, the species was extinct.
“Bringing back extinct animals isn’t just because we can,” says Forrest Galante, a scientist who serves as a conservation advisor to Colossal Biosciences. “In the case of the dodo, it will put back something of the food chain.” Removing the bird created a gap in the ecosystem of the environment, Recovering it, in theory, should help fill that gap. “You’re bringing back a creature, an individual and a group of them that will most importantly repair a damaged ecosystem, because they’ve been removed by human beings,” says Galante.
Just like in Jurassic Park, DNA is required to bring back an extinct animal. DNA from species like the dodo bird and woolly mammoth can be recovered. According to Galante, this DNA is then hatched into a related species that is living today. In the case of the dodo bird, a pigeon is used. When the pigeon lays eggs, dodo birds will hatch from the eggs.
The new dodos will not be the exact same type of bird, but close enough to fill the gaps their extinction left behind.

Today I had to go to work with my crutches (拐杖). I was worried about using my crutches. People would think I was looking for attention, judge me because I was overweight or think I didn’t need then. I overworked my body, so my crutches came with me to work today. Some people remembered my first sciatic attack and offered to help with stuff. A Neste fuel station in Finland is currently the only place in the world where you can have your car refueled by a robot. It’s the pilot site chosen by Autofuel, a Danish startup, to test its futuristic refueling system-a robotic arm that can locate a car’s fuel tank door, select the right type of fuel, and operate the pump (加油泵).
“Our technology intends to provide the customers with maximum comfort and safety at gas stations,” Jonas Thor Olsen, CEO of Autofuel, said. “The robotic arm doesn’t need human involvement. It allows them to go to the shop for a coffee or take a short break while the car is refueled.”
Autofuel’s solution consists of a robotic arm housed within the fuel pump, and a series of sensors and cameras designed to keep things running smoothly. Cameras detect the vehicle’s registration number, so the system is able to detect what kind of fuel it requires. Another camera directs the car to stop in a certain area so that the arm can easily reach the fuel tank door. The arm itself then starts to move, opening the door, selecting the right fuel and finally refueling the car.
The whole thing looks great in promotional videos, but after one of then recently became popular online, people brought up a few concerns. First of all, in order for the entire process to work, one needs to have their vehicle registered with Autofuel. That’s information many people have no inclination to share for something as small as refueling. Also, the speed at which the robotic arm operates worries a lot of people as it appears to move much slower than a human.

As a result, I wasn’t very selective about what I applied for; I pursued any job opportunity that broadly fit my skills and interests. The job at the consulting company was something I was technically capable of doing, but I didn’t feel passionate about it—and that clearly showed in the interview process.
