In China, many public schools finish classes a few hours before the end of parents’ workday.
So parents can’t work full days or need others to help pick up their children.
To help out working parents, the Ministry of Education(教育部) wants primary and middle schools to close late to make time for working parents. Before parents pick up their children, there should be after-school activities in schools. Teachers can help students with their homework. Students can enjoy their hobbies in groups too. But students can’t have lessons after school.
In Nanjing, there are free after-school activities in all primary schools from 2017. In 2021 the schools change the time from 5:30 p. m. to 6:00 p. m. so that parents can pick up their kids. About 230, 000 children in primary schools do such activities. They are half of all primary school students in the city.
From this spring, Shanghai public schools also change their school hours from ending at 3 p. m. to 4:30 p. m. Teachers work for more hours to look after their students after school. “Teachers take turns to do the activities,” a 5th-grade teacher in Shanghai says, “and usually I look after the students every Wednesday and Friday afternoon.”

I remember the first time I saw a skateboarder go past me when I was 14. The skater moved in and out of the students in a smooth and cool way. I still remember clearly the sound of the tail of the skateboard snapping (啪嗒作响) against the road as the skateboarder jumped up with the board into the air. It was just so cool in a teenage boy’s eyes! After saving money for a long time, I found myself in the skate shop and got my first skateboard.
This first try was the start of a journey that would never end. My friends and I shared information with each other. We watched and studied videos of skateboarding carefully. Then we practiced in the playground. And as my skateboarding years went by, I made friends with other skateboarders. I was so happy that I knew endless good times were waiting for me.
Although skateboarding is great fun, the ability to act confidently (自信地) on a skateboard is no easy thing. To succeed (成功) at anything, you need patience and hard work — skateboarding is no different.
I’m now 36, and, as I grow old, my journey as a skateboarder will go on. Skateboarding is an extension (延伸) of play and I shall never get tired of it.
31.How old was the writer when he first saw a skateboarder
32.According to paragraph 2, what did the writer get from this sport

Humans (人类) need bees to help grow plants. When these insects visit flowers, they collect pollen (花粉). Without bees moving pollen from one flower to another, many plants can’t grow fruits.
In recent years, scientists have noticed a sharp drop in bee numbers. What has happened In brief (简而言之), the insects have lost their food source. As humans have taken over more and more land for cities, natural areas have disappeared. Take England for example. It has lost about 97 percent of its wildflower fields since World War II.
To help out bees, Britain is building “bee bus stops” across the country. These bus stops look ordinary. But there’s a small garden on each of their roofs (顶部). The gardens are full of flowers. They attract (吸引) bees. Because the soil for these gardens is heavy, gardeners have to take care of them twice a year. Other than that, not much is needed to keep the gardens going.
The idea of bee bus stops isn’t new. Several years ago, the Netherlands (荷兰) turned more than 300 of its bus stops into bee bus stops. This project is working. Bee numbers have grown since these bus stops were put into place, according to research. This is certainly good news for the British government.

(2022上·江苏盐城·八年级统考期末)The last Monday in March is an important day in China. It is a day for school safety education(教育). At school, the big accidents mainly are stampedes(踩踏), earthquakes and fires.
A stampede always happens in crowded places. When students around you begin to push, stand there and try to hold onto something. If you fall down in the crowd, put your hands around your head. Move to one side, and bend(弯曲) your body and legs.
Earthquakes happen all over the world. When you feel everything is moving, quickly get under a desk and hold on. If you are outdoors, find a place away from buildings, trees, and power lines(电线). In Japan, many schools take earthquake drills(演练) once a month. They help students stay calm in a real earthquake.
When there’s a fire, leave the classroom quickly. It’s better to put something wet over your mouth and nose. This way, you won’t breathe in(吸入) smoke. When there’s a fire, people can’t jump out of the window from higher than two floors. They may hurt themselves. In the US, most school buildings have fire escapes. Everything seemed well and peaceful in Lilliput and I saw no problems for the people there. But I was wrong. One day a good friend, Reldresal, came to see me and told me about a terrible conflict (冲突) between Lilliput and a country nearby.
“My dear Gulliver,” he said, “please do not think that everything is perfect here in Lilliput. The truth is very different. We are at present fighting against a country called Blefuscu.”

“More than 30,000 Lilliputians died in this conflict.”
“How terrible,” I said. “But why are you fighting ”
“We are fighting because of eggs,” he answered.

“It is not a trivial (琐碎的) matter, Gulliver. On Lilliput we have always opened our boiled eggs from the big end but one day the emperor’s grandfather cut his finger doing this. As a result the emperor made a new rule: everyone must break open their eggs at the smaller end.”
“But why start a war because of this ” I asked. “Small end, big end. Is it important ”
“It is very important for some Lilliputians,” Reldresal continued. “There have been many rebellions. Some of the people have also escaped (逃走) to the island of Blefuscu because they do not want to change their egg-breaking habit.”
“Why have they moved to Blefuscu ” I asked.
“On the island of Blefuscu,” my friend continued, “they have not introduced this new rule. They continue to break their eggs at the big end. The people there do not want to go against their prophet Lustrog and their holy book. For this reason the emperor of Blefuscu declared war against Lilliput.”

Gulliver managed to get away from the small men. He found a boat and tried to sail home. However, there was a great storm at sea. The strong winds drove his boat to an island.
It was strange that everyone on the island was very large. They were all more than 20 meters tall. A farmer found Gulliver and took him home to his daughter. Gulliver seemed very small to them, like a toy or a pet. The farmer’s daughter took Gulliver to town to show him around. Everyone in town was very surprised to see such a small person.
The Queen heard about Gulliver and bought him from the farmer. She gave Gulliver to the King as a present. The King enjoyed listening to Gulliver talk about his home country and his many travels. Their chairs, tables, knives, forks and plates were all much too big for Gulliver to use, so they built a small house for him to live in. Wherever the King and Queen went, they carried Gulliver with them in his house.
One day they went to the beach. While they were there, a large eagle picked up Gulliver’s house-with Gulliver in it-and carried him high up into the air. “Every worker coming to Beijing has their own reasons. No one lives here without a dream,” said Chen Jianguo, a 35-year-old food deliveryman (送餐员) from a small city called Songyuan. Chen Jianguo dreamed of having his own business in Beijing about 16 years ago when he graduated (毕业) from senior high school. But his father asked him to take his place as a truck driver at the oil field. Although Chen disliked the job, he didn’t want to let his father down. He took the job as a truck driver. Then he got married and had a son.
“I got quite good pay, but life was boring there during those years. Most of the time I had nothing to do, because the trucks were not often used,” said Chen.
Two months ago, Chen decided to give up his job and come to Beijing. His wife agreed that he should go for his dream.
Chen has been a food deliveryman for a month. He works 15 hours every day and hardly has time for lunch at noon. Chen spends only 10 yuan on each meal to cut the cost of living in Beijing. “I want to give a better life to my wife and little son.” he said. “I must work harder and try to become the best food deliveryman at my station.” Chen likes his job because he can meet many different people. Every “thank you” from a customer is like praise for his work.
Chen plans to start his own restaurant in the future, so he always writes down what food people have ordered. In this way, he gets a better knowledge of people’s tastes.

93.What did Chen do before he came to Beijing
94.Who supported Chen’s decision

(2022上·江苏扬州·八年级统考期末)Five years ago, when we first moved up to London we found a black cat in our backyard. He couldn’t run fast because he just had three legs. We wanted to feed him, but he cried and ran away from us. The cat was not at all interested in us.
A week later, when we saw the cat again, we left food out and hoped that he would eat some. But he didn’t. The winter was coming. One day I saw him sitting more quietly and when he turned around I saw there was something wrong with one of his eyes. He couldn’t open his right eye. I knew he wouldn’t let me give him some medical treatment. I caught him the next day and took him to a vet. The vet said that his right eye had to be removed and that he also had another serious illness. I paid lots of money for his medical treatment. Since it was winter, I kept the cat inside at home and placed him in a bathroom where he lived under the bathtub for 3 months. Every time I entered the room, he tried to climb the walls to get away from me. But I never stopped showing him how life could be as an indoor cat. I played music every day and I told him my life story over and over again, until one day in spring he was not afraid of me any more and came out from under the bathtub towards me and rubbed his big head on my leg.
