Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, you have 4 minutes to get to your next class. My high school is very big and those 4 minutes to go from one class to another really isn’t a lot of time. Today I had to go from one end of the building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker first and leave my science book there, but that took time. I was worried about being late, and I was. The math teacher said, “Just be on time tomorrow, or you’ll have detention (放学后留校).”
After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot because I get to create things. The teacher there showed us how to make portraits (肖像). He explained, “A portrait is a way of communicating with a person. It does not just show how the person looks but what is important to understand the person.” We just did drawings today, but I know it’s going to be great. I like drawing.
I like my English class, too. I think the teacher is really supportive. Today we wrote about ourselves. The teacher said to just write what you think, and we’ll pay attention to punctuation (标点) later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good poem, and the teacher said I had used good images (意象) to communicate my feelings.
Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with people I didn’t know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch I signed up for a computer club. I need to learn how to use a computer well because my social studies teacher says it is the one skill you need in every class.

B. He got lost on the campus.
C. He was late for math class.

B. He pointed out the author’s mistake.
C. He asked the author to check punctuation.
D. He encouraged the author to introduce himself.
7. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Learn useful skills in high school
B. My new teachers in high school
C Make plans for high school life
D. My first day in high school
C
The days of just teaching kids their ABCs are long gone. Modern educators are tasked with the seemingly impossible responsibility of making sure that today’s youth are academically (学业上) prepared for life outside the classroom and being self-aware, self-managing, socially aware, relationship-building, and responsible decision-makers who are good to society. That is quite an ask!
But social-emotional learning (SEL) answers this call and delivers upon this tall order. It is a method to improve students’ intrapersonal (内心的), interpersonal, and learning ability. This process improves individual students’ skills and makes for a community of successful learners willing and able to positively contribute to society. This theory truly allows individuals to develop well.
SEL has effectively predicted positive school adjustment in the school setting, increased learning engagement, minimized discipline (纪律) problems, increased high school graduation rates, and increased future employment and adult health. A main part of SEL is helping children understand their emotions. Further, not only is it important that youngsters can identify various emotions, but they must also be able to manage the emotions they experience.
Developing an identity (身份) is necessary for grown-ups, and SEL satisfies this requirement. By helping students develop their identity, SEL helps to increase self-confidence; identification of strengths and needs; and recognition of needs, values, and judgements.
In the classroom, SEL has been shown to positively affect students’ attitudes, behaviors, and academic performance. Further, it decreases negative behaviors, such as being off-task or behaving badly. SEL improves the learning environment and makes it a safe place for learning.
Not only is SEL significant for students’ mental health, but it is also important for teachers’ mental health. SEL increases teacher-reported effectiveness for behavior management and decreases reports of teacher burnout. Ultimately, SEL creates a calmer classroom environment, which makes educating students much easier.
8. What can we say about the responsibility of modern educators according to paragraph 1
A. It is demanding. B. It is rewarding. C. It is respectable. D. It is impossible.
9. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 2
A. How to be a successful learner. B. How to meet the students’ needs.
C. What is needed for a community. D. What is social-emotional learning.
10. What is the primary part of SEL
A Giving students a clear identity. B. Allowing students to predict their future.
C. Offering students’ future jobs. D. Helping students understand and manage emotions.
11. What can we infer about SEL from the last paragraph
A. It is a win-win method. B. It is refused by students.
C. It may make teachers tired. D. It stresses the importance of teachers.

Three Simple Tricks Improve Your Mornings
Most people are familiar with the feeling of being torn out of heavy sleep by the sound of their alarm clock. But why do we feel fresh and fully rested some mornings, while on other days we barely have the energy to turn off the alarm clock
Scientists have carried out a study of 833 adults. The results show that we can control how fresh we feel in the morning if we follow three simple pieces of advice.
As in the sleep research, the test subjects wore special watches that monitored their physical activity and the quantity and quality of their sleep. They were also served different breakfasts, and then through the day the scientists monitored their blood glucose (葡萄糖) levels while those who took part in the research kept a chart of their energy levels through the day. Many of the subjects were twins, helping to rule out genetic differences.
The data showed that the secret behind energetic mornings is a three-stage solution made up of plenty of exercise the previous day, enough sleep, and then the right breakfast.
One researcher explains that each of these three factors are important ingredients if you want to wake up feeling fresh and fully rested—and able to continue feeling relatively energetic for the rest of the day. “If you sleep more than you usually do, you will feel more awake,” he explains. “If you are more physically active the previous day, you get the same effect. Both factors cause improvement.”
The worst breakfast proved to be food with high sugar content; this made those who took part in the research feel sleepy and low on energy for the rest of the day. The best way to start a new day was to eat breakfast with a high content of whole grains and vegetables.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the quantity of sleep was also a key factor in mood. The results proved that 7—9 hours of sleep are necessary to shake off morning sleepiness.
Scientists do not yet know why exercise seems to improve our awareness and ability to wake up re-energized. But they stress that exercise is an important key to our health and mood in general.
12. How does the author introduce the topic of this text
A. By asking a question. B. By giving an explanation.
C. By analyzing an example. D. By showing the author’s experience.
13. What does the underlined word “subjects” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The contents of the test. B. Courses needed for the research.
C. The researchers who give the test. D. Those who are tested in the research.
14. Which factor can cause you feel fresher the next morning according to one researcher
A. Sleeping a little longer. B. Being tired the previous day.
C. Eating something rich in sugar. D. Taking exercise in the morning.
15. In which section of the Internet can we find this text
A. Case Study. B. Lifestyles.
C. Great Ideas. D. Sports and Exercise.

Although I had missed the holiday the year before, and I didn’t want to miss it two years in a row, I didn’t have the money for the ticket, plus I wasn’t sure I could get enough time off from my job. All that wondering changed when my mom called. She got right to the point: “Your grandmother isn’t doing well. I decided I should fly out there for the new year.” Mom was an only child, so that made sense to me. But I was not ready for what I heard next. “We decided you would want to come along so I covered your ticket.”
We arrived as scheduled. Mom was anxious to see her parents, especially her mother, who was really sick. After saying hello to them, we settled in the living room. Grandpa helped Grandma lie down again and told us we would have a big lunch at noon.
He went into the kitchen. Mom walked up and down in the living room. Finally, I asked her what the matter was. “He can’t cook,” she said, wondering. “How’s he supposed to fix a holiday meal for us ”I tried to reason with her.
“Can’t you smell dinner It smells good to me. Grandma is upstairs resting. Grandpa is the only one who could be cooking.” But we couldn’t see through the kitchen door. She had an idea. “Let’s go out to the front door and see from outside the window what’s going on inside. Then we will know who is really cooking.” Grandpa was very hard of hearing, so he didn’t hear us leave. It was a crazy plan, but I followed her around the house to the kitchen windows.

Developing an identity (身份) is necessary for grown-ups and SEL satisfies this requirement.
A. Giving students a clear identity.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. D 11. A

My second year in college had started. I hadn’t decided whether to fly home for the new year yet.

【答案】 There we watched Grandpa fill water glasses, make coffee and do everything skillfully. Though he was slow because of old age, he cut, cook and mixed smoothly. He was even cooking a big Turkey in the oven. Mom was surprised to see all these. Then Grandpa brought the water, then the coffee, rolls and individual lettuce salads out to the dinning room. Speaking directly to my mom, he said, “I am going to get your mother up and bring her down to eat with us. You two go sit down at the dining room table.” So we did.
Looking at the nice food on the table, Mom asked, “When did you learn to cook ” Grandpa didn’t answer my mother’s question right away. Instead, he smiled and handed out food to each of us. I could tell he was very happy that we were here. Then he said that since Grandma was unable to cook due to health reasons, he began to learn to cook little by little. It made my mother and I feel at ease and less worried about their daily lives. I can’t help but have a kind of admiration for grandpa. Love and responsibility can change people, even in the old age.
