The coldest temperature ever recorded (记录) in winter
The coldest temperature during the winter was-27.2℃ in the UK. The temperature was recorded twice in the village of Braemar in1895 and again in 1982, and once in Altnaharra in 1995.
The winter of 1963
The winter of 1963 is one of the coldest in record. Temperatures reached lower than-20℃ with blizzard and snowdrifts (暴风雪和吹积雪). The severe cold (严寒) started several days before Christmas in 1962. On December 29th and 30th, a blizzard hit the UK. Snow kept falling until early in March, 1963, and much of the UK was covered with snow.
The word “winter”
The word “winter” comes from the word “wintar”. It derives from the root (源于词根) “wed” meaning “wet” or “water”. In some places, people count (计算) the years by the winters. So if a kid is 5 years old, we could say he is 5 winters old.

“Cool” is a word with many meanings. Its old meaning is used to express a temperature that is a little bit cold. As the world has changed, the word has had many different meanings.
“Cool” can be used to express feelings of interest in almost anything. When you see a famous car in the street, maybe you will say, “It’s cool.” You may think, “He’s so cool” when you see your favorite footballer. We all maximize (扩大) the meaning of “cool”. You can use it instead of many words such as “new” or “surprising”. Here’s an interesting story we can use to show the way the word is used. A teacher asked her students to write about the waterfall (瀑布) they had visited. On one student’s paper was just the one sentence. “It’s so cool”. Maybe he thought it was the best way to show what he saw and felt.

Have you heard about paper-cutting Paper-cutting is an important art form in China. The topic of my speech is “Learn to Express Thanks". Nowadays some middle school students don’t express thanks in their daily lives. They usually think they’re the center of their families without caring about their parents and teachers. They hardly do any housework in the house even though their parents work hard. And some of them sometimes talk back their teachers.
As middle school students, we should learn to express thanks. We should thank our parents for bringing us to the world and our teachers for giving us knowledge. We need to study harder to pay them back in the future.
