Analysis of learning material This is the second unit of senior book 1 and talks about travel in Peru, which belongs to one subtopic of humans and nature. An 82-word encyclopedia is presented before reading passages independently in Part 2, introducing Peruvian geographic features, ancient civilization, and official language. Then, a 236-word reading passage with four short paragraphs introduces four main attractions in Peru, such as the Amazon rainforest, Machu Pichu, Cuzco, and Lake Titicaca. Two exercises attached after the text are used to check students’ comprehension.
Student profile Students are active but weak in making complete sentences. They are eager to open their mouths and have a basic level of ability to analyze problems.
Teaching design Based on the interdisciplinary concept, this travel brochure involves some geographic and historic knowledge. While knowing Peru, its history, attractions, geographic features, and related global issues are supposed to be introduced, enriching this travel plan and building up a clear big picture in their minds with vivid images and videos. To make students know that English can just be a medium while learning, English class should be inclusive. Importantly, learning should be wide, deep and connected with their lives.
Objectives By the end of the class, students will be able to: acquire the basic usage of the new words and expressions concerning tours to Peru and learn to use them flexibly; improve reading skills like scanning and skimming, taking key information and retelling based on a mind-map, and develop my different reading strategies to solve different reading comprehensive problems; know famous attractions and cultural characters in Peru; through learning, realize the damage in the Amazon Rainforest to arouse their sense of environmental protection; retell the passage with a mind-map.

The Andes contain 99% of the world’s tropical glaciers 71% are in Peru ● Machu Picchu It was built of stones without cement or other bonding. Earthquakes made them stronger. ● Cusco The birthplace of the Inca Civilization, it failed in the war with the Spanish. How many soldiers did the Spanish send in the war ● Lake Titicaca A floating island is made of water plants. This island is floating and moving. For every tomorrow, we always say tomorrow will be a great day. But residents on this island, always ask “Where are we ” You know, this island is made of local water plants, even their house. Interestingly, they even hide their TV, lights, and Nikes away to welcome visitors. ● Students will know the geographic features of Peru and also expand their eyes by knowing Peruvian’s geographic features and main areas. ● Before reading, the teacher hopes to provide a more general picture for students. English learning is more than its grammar or sentences from textbooks, but is a bigger and more interesting world connected with their lives. ● Reading passages in the textbook provides very limited materials. A lesson about travel is not only word descriptions but images, videos and interesting stories. They can picture a vivid Peru in their minds.
While-reading (15mins) Read the texts Read the text by yourself in Part 2, and identify whether this part should be an encyclopedia or a brochure and provide evidence. 1st Reading: Read the “TRAVEL PERU” while finishing the table on their worksheets. 2nd Reading: Finish the comprehensive questions on their worksheets. Retell: Make a travel route for tourists based on the class share with your group members. ● Read the short paragraph on their own and identify it as an encyclopedia or a brochure. Then, read “Travel Peru” and finish the exercises. ● For Peruvian attractions, appreciate some images and videos. Based on their understanding, work in groups to draw mind maps to retell the travel route. ● Analyze the type of paragraph by finding evidence. ● Reading skills like scanning and skimming are practiced at this phase. ● Making a mind map can help them comprehend the Peruvian travel route well.
