In my late 20s, my world turned upside down in just 72 hours. My husband Doug worked at local construction company, while I was a quality-control inspector for JanSport, a backpack manufacturer located in Wenatchee, Washington. We were both extremely hard workers, but we could not work our way out of a declining economy. Doug was laid off on Wednesday and, two short days later, I learned that my entire plant had decided to relocate to Mexico to save money.
I didn’t react well to the news. I wanted to find a place to hide, but that wasn’t an option. I was scared when my husband got his lay-off notice on Wednesday. I was still suffering from the uncertainty of how we would make ends meet when I walked into work that fateful Friday and was told our plant was closing. At that point, I was absolutely shocked, angry, scared beyond description, and at a loss as to what we were going to do.
Although money had been tight in our home for some time, our family had made a smart decision a few years earlier that saved us from disaster. It had taken us two years, but we managed to save an emergency fund. In the end, losing all of our family’s income sources in the space of three days didn’t break us. It made us stronger.
Instead of hiding from my problem, I picked myself up and decided to help improve my family’s circumstances. There was actually a hidden blessing in the whole storm for me. Because my plant had closed down, I was eligible to go to school under Job Training Partnership Act. Was it embarrassing to ask for help from the state to improve myself Sure. But in studying to be an accountant I was making a better future for my family for years to come. I have also paid that help forward countless times, contributing time and money to the community and sharing my story to help others help themselves.

The year I turned fifty, I resolved to do something new every day. However, balancing 365 new things with work and family, while still managing to do the laundry and get dinner on the table every night, was not always easy. In the early weeks of the project, I found it difficult to find so many new things.
It wasn’t long before my friends learned that I was open to almost anything I could consider a new thing, and the invitations began pouring in not just from friends, but friends of friends. As a result, my life was new. I went dog sledding. I attended a fashion show. I went to numerous lectures on all kinds of topics that I never would have previously considered useful or interesting and found something to appreciate in every single one. I even signed up immediately when learning about a local group trying to get into the Guinness Book of World Records by doing something unusual.
As time went by, whenever I learned about something that seemed remarkable, I did what I could to pursue it. Instead of “Why”, I began to ask “Why not”. Now I find it is easier to just keep my eyes open to the possibilities that surrounded me. It turned out that there were new things everywhere, and all I had to do was make a little effort to enjoy them.
I looked back on the year. It doesn’t matter to me that many of my “new things” weren’t exactly meaningful. What matters is how to make full use of them when discovering there is an endless number of new things for me. It seemed to me an obvious sign that at fifty, my life was full of promise. I could continue to grow, stretch my wings, and learn more every day for the rest of my life. I enjoyed the idea of something new, and it gave me a reason to welcome each day as an opportunity to experience the world a little differently.

Coffee is probably the world’s least expensive success power tool. Coffee builds better teams and increases your leadership ability. Coffee also increases your immunity. It increases focus and drive and may even increase your lifespan.
Unfortunately, we may not be enjoying the benefits or pleasures of coffee too much longer. According to ecologists, there’s a good chance that in 20 or 30 years, the varieties of coffee that we drink today will be extinct. And we’ll be drinking a coffee substitute that more or less resembles the drink we enjoy today.
The problem, of course, is the pace of climate change. Successful coffee cultivation has three preconditions: a warm, highly stable (稳定)tropical (热带的)climate with altitudes that keep air temperature between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, rich soil full of natural nutrients, and an ecological environment that’s pest and disease resistant.
Coffee is a crop that is only grown in a thin band called the “coffee belt” close to the equator (赤道). It simply won’t grow anywhere else. Unfortunately, the “coffee belt” is extremely vulnerable to climate change. If the air is too cold or too hot, it prevents the growth of the coffee plant.
Climate change also creates environmental stress, which spreads parasites, pests and plant diseases. All of these increase the fragility of the coffee crop and create the possibility of species-destroying rot.
Almost all the coffee cultivated in the world today is one of two species, arabica or Robusta, either of which might be wiped out in this way. There are other species of coffee, and scientists are hoping that, if worse comes to worst, a different species can be bred into coffee.
Unfortunately, almost all of these species exist only in Ethiopia, a country that climate change is already hammering. As the environmental nonprofit USAID points out:
“Ethiopia is one of the world’s most drought-prone countries. The country is faced with numerous development challenges that exacerbate its weakness facing climate change including increases in temperature, unstable rainfall and unpredictability of seasonal rain, and increased incidences of drought and other extreme events.”
In other words, even as climate change threatens coffee as it exists today, climate change is also eating away at the root source which we might turn to for replacement species.
What to do Well, take the time to savor each cup of coffee you drink. Beyond that, stop electing the politicians who deny climate change.
12. What is the author’s feeling about the future of coffee
A. Helpless. B. Bored. C. Happy. D. Concerned.
13. Which condition probably prevents the growth of the coffee plant
A. A tropical climate. B. Rich soil.
C. Increasing temperature. D. Stable rainfall.
14. The underlined word in Paragraph 8 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. remove B. worsen C. decrease D. accept
15. What might be the best title for the passage
A. Change Climate for Coffee B. Enjoy Coffee While You Can
C. Benefits from Coffee Drinking D. Conditions for Coffee Planting

In my childhood, my teacher Mrs. Hunter announced that our class would complete a pen-friend project. We would write letters to children in some African countries to make friends with them. So all of us needed to bring stationery (信纸) to school the next day.
Finding some beautiful stationery which was designed with lovely cartoon characters, such as Minnie Mouse and Snow White in the store, I asked my mother to buy it for me. At the store, we learned that a pack of ten pieces of such stationery cost close to seven dollars.
“You’ll have to use common paper,” my mother said. Then, she bought a pack of cheap common paper for me. Obviously, there weren’t any cartoon characters on the paper, so I was upset and disappointed. At that time, I didn’t know my mother was facing some financial (财政的) problems and was trying hard to support the family.
That night, my mother, a lover of schedules, sent me to the bed at the usual time of 9:30. But then instead of going to bed as she normally did, she remained in the living room. When I didn’t hear the voice of a news host through the TV, I wondered what exactly kept my mother up past her bedtime. Walking up to her I found she bent beneath our single lamp, sketching (画素描). When I asked what she was drawing, my mother just covered the page with her arms and ordered me to return to my bed. A week ago, I had begged her for a new box of crayons and she refused. Now I wanted beautiful stationery and she refused again. That night, I lay in bed looking at the moon, believing I was the unluckiest girl in the world.
The next morning, my mother’s eyes were black-ringed, and she looked so tired while preparing the breakfast of oatmeal (燕麦糊) in the kitchen. “Drink it before school,” she said, pointing at the food.

C

根据第一段“The year I turned fifty, I resolved to do something new every day. However, balancing 365 new things with work and family, while still managing to do the laundry and get dinner on the table every night, was not always easy. In the early weeks of the project, I found it difficult to find so many new things.”
根据第二段中的“I was open to almost anything I could consider a new thing. I went to numerous lectures on all kinds of topics that I never would have previously considered useful or interesting and found something to appreciate in every single one.” appreciative(欣赏的)是文中appreciate的形容词。
根据最后一段中的“It doesn’t matter to me that many of my “new things” weren’t exactly meaningful. What matters is how to make full use of them when discovering there is an endless number of new things for me.” 故选A。
由最后一段的“I looked back on the year. I enjoyed the idea of something new, and it gave me a reason to welcome each day as an opportunity to experience the world a little differently.”
D
Coffee is probably the world’s least expensive success power tool. Coffee builds better teams and increases your leadership ability. Coffee also increases your immunity. It increases focus and drive and may even increase your lifespan.
Unfortunately, we may not be enjoying the benefits or pleasures of coffee too much longer. According to ecologists, there’s a good chance that in 20 or 30 years, the varieties of coffee that we drink today will be extinct. And we’ll be drinking a coffee substitute that more or less resembles the drink we enjoy today.
The problem, of course, is the pace of climate change. Successful coffee cultivation has three preconditions: a warm, highly stable (稳定的)tropical (热带的)climate with altitudes that keep air temperature between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, rich soil full of natural nutrients, and an ecological environment that’s pest and disease resistant.
D 13. C 14. B 15. B
根据第二段的“Unfortunately, we may not be enjoying the benefits or pleasures of coffee too much longer. According to ecologists, there’s a good chance that in 20 or 30 years, the varieties of coffee that we drink today will be extinct.”(不幸的是,20-30年后,我们今天喝的咖啡可能会消失,我们可能不再享受咖啡带来的乐趣)”可推知,作者对咖啡的将来很担忧。
根据第四段的“If the air is too cold or too hot, it prevents the growth of the coffee plant. (如果空气太冷或太热,就会阻碍咖啡植株的生长)”可知,太冷或太热都不利于咖啡种植。C项“不断上升的温度”符合题意。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第八段的“Ethiopia is one of the world’s most drought-prone countries. The country is confronted with numerous development challenges that exacerbate its weakness facing climate change including increases in temperature, unstable rainfall and unpredictability of seasonal rain, and increased incidences of drought and other extreme events.(埃塞俄比亚是世界上最干旱的国家之一。这个国家面临许多挑战。气温增加,不稳定的雨量,不可预测的雨季,干旱以及极端事件。这些都使得它本身干旱的弱点更加exacerbate)”并结合上下文,尤其关键词numerous development challenges和weakness可推知划线词意为“恶化”,即这些大量的挑战让干旱更加恶化。A. remove移开;B. worsen恶化;C. decrease降低;D. accept接受。
再根据最后一段的“Well, take the time to savor eachcup of coffee you drink.

be of importance意为“重要的”。
look forward to doing sth.
故填which。
故填before。
故填their。
故填an。
故填or。
measure sb. for sth. 故填are measured。

Paragraph 2:
“Mom, the cartoon characters are so beautiful”I said, with a smile.“Thank you.”
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
“I don’t want any, “I sad unhappily, still upset she didn’t buy beautiful stationery for me. She carried two bowls of oatmeal to the table, “I suppose you don’t want any of the common stationery, either,” a faint smile flashing across her lips. Hearing her words, I immediately noticed a pack of paper next to my bowl. I stepped closer to the table and picked it up without delay, surprisingly seeing other pretty cartoon characters on every piece of paper. Only then did I realize Mom had stayed up to make the drawing.
Paragraph 2:
“Mom, the cartoon characters are so beautiful,” I said with a smile, “Thank you.” Looking at her black-ringed and tired eyes, I felt a great sense of guilt welling up my heart at the thought of my attitude to my mother, tears blurring my eyes. I held the beautiful stationery and walked to my mother, hugging her tightly, “I’m so sorry and thank you for what you have done for me. I am the luckiest girl in the world.” Hearing this, my mother smiled with relief, patting my back gently.
