Octopuses have different ways to get away from their enemies. Sometimes they

collecting coconut shells.
50 an octopus thought it was in danger, it raced back to the shells. Then it got

coconut shells are very hard on the outside, the octopus was able to create a(n) 52 ball

Tyler broke his arm in a bicycle accident. A car knocked Tyler down when it came
out of a side street without stopping. The accident happened because there was no stop
sign at the corner and the car didn't stop. Then Tyler decided to try to get the city to put
up a stop sign.
First, Tyler wrote a petition(请愿书) to have a stop sign put up with his parents' help.
Then Tyler and his parents asked their neighbors, friends, teachers, classmates...—almost
everyone they knew — to sign the petition. Soon, there were hundreds of names on the
petition.
Tyler also got some information about other accidents that happened at the same
4
{#{QQABSYoEggiAABAAARhCEQW4CkAQkBCAAIoGxAAEoAABAQFABAA=}#}
corner where he had his own accident. If he could show the city that it was a dangerous
corner, officers might put up a stop sign there. He hoped that this information and his
petition would work.
When the petition was ready, Tyler and his parents went to a meeting of the city
council(政务委员会).They brought along the petition and the other information. After a
long wait, Tyler got a chance to tell what had happened to him. He told the story of the
bicycle accident and explained his idea. If there was a stop sign at the corner where the
accident happened, other kids would be safer.
After that, Tyler read the petition out loud. Then, he handed it and the other
information in to the city council. The city council agreed to consider the request and
make a decision before their next meeting.
The next month, Tyler and his parents attended another meeting of the city council.

Smokejumpers (空降森林灭火员) are firefighters who jump into hard-to-reach areas
to fight fires. The jumpers thought that using parachutes to get
closer to fires could help keep fires from spreading. It was a
good idea but a deadly one. Ever since its beginnings,
smokejumping has been a very dangerous job.
During the training they have to run long
distances while carrying heavy things. During a jump, they
might get caught in a tree, so jumpers learn to free themselves
and climb safely to the bottom.
Parachute training exercises are an important part of smokejumper training. Special
simulators give jumpers a feel for what to expect during the fall. These simulators teach
them how to control their parachutes and make sure they open safely. The jumpers
practice landing by jumping off buildings that are built a short distance from the ground.
Hitting the hard earth at top speed is no easy task. It can be painful. After several weeks
5
{#{QQABSYoEggiAABAAARhCEQW4CkAQkBCAAIoGxAAEoAABAQFABAA=}#}
of preparation, jumpers are ready for the real thing and make their first jump from an
airplane.
Then training is over. Some people get the chance to be included on the " jump list",
a special team of firefighters who are qualified(有资格的) to parachute into fires. Then
the smokejumpers are divided into groups and join different organizations.
When a fire breaks out, wherever they are, smokejumpers spring into action. They
fight fires when no one else can. To stop a fire when there are no fire hydrants (消防栓) or
fire trucks to supply water, smokejumpers create a "firebreak"— an area that stops the
fire from spreading - by cutting down trees and digging long deep holes in the ground.
This process prevents the fire from causing more damage(损失).
( )63. What is the theme (主题) of the passage
A. Work. B. Nature. C. Education. D. Technology.
( )64. What do we know about smokejumpers according to the passage
A. Their job is pretty dangerous. B. They often get caught in a tree.

( )66. What does the underlined word " simulators" mean in Paragraph 3
A. Methods. B. Routes. C.Machines. D. Messages.
( )67. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Finding a fire hydrant is not easy.

C. Fire hydrants can help stop the fire right away.
D. Cutting down trees is a useful way to protect people in danger.

①Many people say that when they use thick quilts. they have better sleep, lower
stress and worry, and are more relaxed than using light ones.
②Recently, researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden did a study to find out
whether using a thick quilt can actually help sleep.
③Twenty-six young, healthy volunteers took part in the study. In one stage, they
were covered with a thick quilt (weighing about 12% of their body weight) for one hour
before bedtime, and then they had an eight-hour sleep. Researchers collected their saliva
samples(唾液样本) during the pre-sleep hour to record changes in melatonin(褪黑素)and
other hormone concentrations(激素浓度).In the next stage, volunteers were covered with
a light quilt(weighing about 2.4% of their body weight) for the night. They found that
when volunteers lay under a thick quilt for an hour before bedtime, they showed about a
32% increase in salivary melatonin concentrations compared to when they used the
lighter quilt.
④Melatonin plays a big role in our body's sleep-wake cycle. Its release(释放),
caused by the reduction(减少) in light at the end of the day, gives messages to the rest of
the body's sleep systems which work and get you ready to fall asleep for the night. The
body produces melatonin at night, and there are a few ways to get melatonin from
others-certain foods like cherries and milk or melatonin supplements(补充剂).
⑤While this study is small and just a first step in exploring the health advantages of
thick quilts, it does suggest that thick quilts can help sleep. More related studies will be
carried out in the future.
6
{#{QQABSYoEggiAABAAARhCEQW4CkAQkBCAAIoGxAAEoAABAQFABAA=}#}
( )68. How did researchers find out the changes of melatonin in the study
A.By recording how long the volunteers have deep sleep.
B. By asking if the volunteers sleep well the whole night.
C. By collecting volunteers' saliva samples before bedtime.
D. By giving volunteers medical examinations after they fall asleep.
( )69. What can you learn from Paragraph 4
A. Eating cherries can help people sleep well.
B.The body can not produce melatonin itself.
C. Melatonin can hardly influence one's sleep.
D. Melatonin supplements can be used every night.
( )70. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage
( )71.In the study, if the volunteer's weight is 60kg, how heavy will the light quilt be
A. About 1.5kg. B. About 3.5kg. C. About 7.5kg. D. About 12.5kg.
( )72.What's the best title for the passage

As a middle school student, I think students should wear school
uniforms at school.
First, wearing school uniforms takes students less time to get
ready for school each morning. Instead of standing in front of the
mirror and trying to decide which clothes to wear, students can just
put on school uniforms.
Second, wearing school uniforms helps parents save money.
When students wear the same clothes at school, they needn't spend
too much money on some cool or beautiful clothes.
Third, wearing school uniforms helps students pay more
attention to their studies. When a student doesn't have to worry
about his or her look, he or she can spend more time studying.
All in all, I think it's a must for middle school students to wear
uniforms at school.
