Unit 1 Science and Scientists
Reading and thinking
Good morning, dear judges. It’s my great pleasure to be here sharing my teaching view.
The content of my lesson is Senior English required elective course Book 2 Unit 1 Reading and Thinking “John Snow defeats King Cholera”
To begin with, I will introduce my basic teaching elements from the following perspectives.
Ⅰ Teaching material analysis
The theme of this section is "understanding the questioning mind". By guiding students to analyze John Snow's process and methods of exploring the source of cholera, cutting off the source of infection, and finally preventing the epidemic of cholera, the textbook urges them to think about and sort out the basic steps and common methods of scientific research, and understand the important role of questioning spirit in scientific research.
This paper is a narrative text that describes the development process of events in chronological order.
The steps of scientific research are the hidden clue of the article.
Thanks to snow's tireless efforts, people began to drink clean water, and the threat of cholera was significantly reduced worldwide. His research results and research methods are also of practical significance to the prevention of cholera today, and "cholera map" has become a classic case of epidemiological research, so snow has won the reputation of "father of epidemiology".
Ⅱ Students analysis
Students are the subject of senior 2; They have some life experience and basic knowledge of English; They can understand the basic English sentences;
Their learning attitude and motivation is not clear; They are lack of some proper reading strategies.

Step 1 Lead in
Show some pictures about some famous scientists with the help of the multimedia and share some details about them.
Purpose: 1. To activate students’ knowledge;
2. To arouse students’ interest in learning about the topic.
Step 2 Pre-reading:
Look at the picture, the title and the map, guess what the content of the text is. Then skim it quickly to see if you are right.
