In spring 2015, after 39 years with Columbia Pictures, I retired and found myself with lots of free time to
spare.
I decided to use that time to volunteer. While tutoring with the adult literacy(识字)program at my local library,
a flyer (传单)for a neighborhood group called Westchester Villages caught my eye. Its main job is about matching aging neighbors with local volunteers who help them in a number of different ways: Making short visits, being a
walking partner, or driving to doctors’ appointments and the like.
I am happy to offer myself as a responsible person and a comfort to someone who is nervous about their
appointment and concerned about getting there safely on time. I’m usually available to stay with the person I’m driving during their visit and accompany them back to my car for the ride home. These drives also can be ideal times for relaxing conversation. I’ve had many discussions with them, discovered many common interests, and
heard numerous extended stories of past travels and family histories.
I often begin rides by reassuring(使放心)a nervous neighbor by calmly saying, “I know where we’re going, the
most direct route, and the best place to park. You’re in good hands with me.” These driving experiences also have
afforded me opportunities for reflection and insight. I’ve come to feel united with the neighbors I have come to
know, and a keener awareness of the aging process we all share. In living through so much time with them, I realize
I’m going through the same stages.
A final irony(讽刺)for this movie lover is that I no longer need to go to a darkened theatre and gaze at a big screen in search of high drama. Whether it’s a World War II-era family story or anxiety about current events or
good news from a doctor, I experience all from a decidedly front row seat.
24 .What did the author decide to do during his free time
A .Work for the local library.
B .Give rides for aging neighbors.
C .Offer neighbors medical care.
D .Teach adults in a neighborhood.
25 .Which of the following can best describe the author
A .Creative and capable. B .Devoted and considerate.
C .Talented and hard-working. D .Ambitious and warm-hearted.
26 .What might the author’s driving experiences remind him of
A .Passengers’ words of comfort.
B .The value of conversations.
C .A driver’s responsibility.
D .His own aging process.
27 .What can we infer from the last paragraph
A .The author has been anxious about his health.
B .The author has no interest in dramas anymore.
C .The author has found a new way of experiencing life.
D .The author prefers watching movies from a front row.
C
I’ve been in an 18-year love-hate relationship with a black walnut tree.
It’s a unique tree. In late September or early October, falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls (头 骨) of you, your children, your neighbors and those that reside next door to them. Umbrellas in the yard are a must
while dining in early August, and as for me, I wear my bike helmet while working in the garden.
The black walnut also releases a chemical substance through its roots as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous
to several common plants. There have been many new plant varieties that I brought home with hopes that maybe
the black walnut would accept them, but they failed to flourish.
What does work are native plants that naturally grow in the area. Native plants are important to have around
since they provide beneficial pollinators (传粉者) like birds, bees and butterflies with seeds and contribute to a
healthy and biodiverse environment. Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less
stress.
Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. It’s also protected under the law. Rightfully so.
Trees are important to the urban forest and for all of those that inhabit it.
Sometimes I think about my life without the black walnut. I can’t imagine a spring without the birds who
arrive every year and loudly sing their songs before dawn. I’d miss falling asleep on lazy weekend afternoons as I
look up into its leaves.
Every spring, I wonder what the season holds: What are the chances of being knocked unconscious while
barbecuing Like any good relationship, I’ll never be pleased. I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and
give it the space it requires. In return, my walnut offers a habitat for wildlife and a reminder.
28 .Why does the author wear a bike helmet while working in the garden
A .To protect the injured skull. B .To prevent herself from sunburn.
C .To avoid being hit by the nuts. D .To reduce the chance of getting bitten by bees.
29 .What is the tree’s survival strategy
A .It attracts beneficial pollinators.
B .It lets out poison to drive away pests.
C .It produces a chemical fatal to some plants.
D .It competes for nutrition with similar species.
30 .Which of the following DOESN’T account for the author’s love-hate relationship with the tree
A .The volume of its fruits may bring inconvenience.
B .The tree outcompetes the native plants in the garden.
C .The tree is home to numerous birds and other creatures.
D .The presence of the tree takes up much space of the garden.
31 .The author most probably got a reminder from the tree that .
A .it’s better to give than to take
B .trees and plants have their own ways to flourish
C .even a good relationship is not always trouble-free
D .acceptance, instead of resistance, is the better way to be
D
Scientists today are concerned about the growing number of species in the world that may soon become
extinct. The United Nations, along with many governments, are trying to save these endangered species. To help
resolve this issue, scientists have been trying to learn why species become endangered.
In the United States, loss of habitats is the main reason for species becoming endangered. As populations grow and cities or towns expand, nature is destroyed and the ecosystem is affected. Even small changes in one part of an ecosystem can have a big impact on another part of it. For example, deforestation may result in a change in ground
temperature, which may kill off a certain kind of plant in the forest. Animals that eat this plant may suddenly find
that there is no available food so they starve to death.
Another possible cause of endangered or extinct species is climate change and rising sea levels. As the Earth
gets warmer, this has profound effects on animal and plant life everywhere. For example, rising sea levels make
coastal areas unfit for birds to live in. Warmer temperatures melt the ice where polarbears live, wrecking their
habitat and making it harder for them to find food. The rising seas also make it harder for polarbears to swim from
the cold waters to frozen packs of ice so many of them drown.
There are several ways that people are trying to help endangered species recover. Ecologists study different
species and try to find out more information about them to try and help. In Finland, for example, scientists found
that a a decrease in the number of bogs(沼泽) was responsible for the falling butterfly population. Once they
understood this, they could manage the butterfly population and help it recover. Governments are also passing laws to protect endangered animals. One example of this is an area near Hawaii with a seriously low fish population. The
United States’ government has made it illegal for fishing boats to enter this area.
32. What can we infer from paragraph 2
A. Most endangered species are located in the United States.
B. Cities and towns in the United States are growing too fast.
C. Ecosystem changes can result in habitat loss and animal death.
D. More trees need to be planted to prevent animals from dying out.
33. What does the underlined word “wrecking” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Conserving. B. Damaging. C. Providing. D. Dominating.
34. Which is the best title for this text
A. Saving Endangered Species B. A List of Endangered Species
C. The Causes of Global Warming D. How Polar Bears Became Extinct
35. What will the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows
A. Some other ways to help endangered species recover.
B. A brief discussion of polarbears and their diet habits.
C. The impact of fishing laws on the development of Hawaii.
D. Various opinions and debates concerning the cause of global warming.

feeling.

When I was five years old, we lived in a small town in the Midwest in an old yellow house with a stream out
back. On summer days, I used to play with a neighbor girl named Marie, who was two years older. She would take my hand and lead me down to the stream, where I could lie on the bank and stare at the muddy water. On one such day I was sitting on the bank, with my dirty toes in the soft warm mud, when Marie took something from the pocket
of her overalls. It was a little boat, made of paper.
“Papa made this for me,” she boasted. I stared at it, immediately wishing that I had an equally fine object to
show. I had nothing in my pocket but a small plastic truck with only three wheels.
Marie placed her boat in the water. Then, the current took hold of it and swirled it downstream. “See ” Marie said in excitement. “See my canoe drifting down the stream After a while that little stream will turn into a bigger stream and it will go a little faster. Then that stream will turn into an even bigger stream, and the streams will keep getting bigger and bigger until finally it will reach a big river, and it will go faster and faster, and then it will come
out in the ocean.”
“Have you ever seen the ocean, Willy ” she inquired softly, inclining her head so that her bright brown eyes
looked straight into mine.
I looked down at my muddy toes and shook my head no.
“At the ocean,” Marie explained, “water reaches for miles and miles, as far as you can see, and it’s deep water,
dark blue and green.”
“And there’s sailing ships that go on the ocean, where you can get on, and sail for days and weeks and months,
until you get all the way to China.”
“Pretend that canoe is a real boat, Willy,” she whispered. “You and I could get in that boat and sail all the way
to the ocean.” She looked out at the stream, disappearing around a stand of trees.
Para. 1:
Ifingered the useless toy truck in my pocket.
Para. 2:
Then, she looked at me with a sparkle in her eyes.

M: Yes, the key workers get it first, along with the elders. Young people come last.
W: When it’s my turn, I want the British medicine.
M: That’s the one I have preferred, but they gave me the American one. Some people I work with have had the
German one.
W: I suppose it doesn’t matter, as long as it keeps you safe.
M: I have to go back for a second shot in a few weeks. Then I should be fully protected.

【解析】
【原文】W: That painting on the wall is really great.
M: Thank you.
W: It’s almost like a photograph of her. How do you get the eyes to look so realistic
M: I like to put some light in the eyes. I do it with a little spot of white paint on the tip of my brush.
W: It makes your sister look like she’s laughing. Her hair is good as well. It’s really true-to-life. You should hang
this picture in your gallery someday.
M: I hope so. I’ve had lots of practice on hair by drawing pictures of my cat. She always sits on the table next to me
when I’m working.
W: I notice that whenever you paint a picture, the models have their hands in their pockets. Why do you like that
pose so much
M: To be honest—Ijust don’t like painting them. I find them really difficult.
W: The hands, you mean
M: Yes, I never seem to be able to get them right.
W: You can practice on mine in my bookstore, if you like. I’m a friend, so I won’t tell anybody if you get them
wrong.
M: I may just do that. I shouldn’t let a thing like that defeat me.
W: Especially when you paint everything else so perfectly. Thanks for inviting me to your home anyway.
听下面一段独白,回答以下小题。
17. Which system was Fulani written in before
A. Arabic. B. Chinese. C. Latin.
18. How many people speak Fulani according to the talk
A. Around 10 million. B. About 14 million. C. More than 40 million.
19. What were the Barry brothers probably trying to do
A. Sell a product.
B. Learn a new language.
C. Create an alphabet for their language.
20. What happened in 2016
A. The new alphabet was employed to type.
B. Drawing was taught in Fulani schools.
C. The Barry brothers were sponsored by a big company.
【答案】 17. A 18. C 19. C 20. A
【原文】It’s not every day that a new alphabet is born. One day in 1989, the Barry brothers wondered why their language didn’t have its own alphabet. Now, they knew that many languages use the same few alphabets. Nearly all European languages use the Latin alphabet. The writing of several languages is based on Chinese characters. The
brothers’ own African language, Fulani, had been written in the Arabic alphabet over the centuries. But they also
knew that many sounds which were particular to their language couldn’t be represented by their language. For example, there was no letter for a “b” that is pronounced while sucking in air. More than 40 million people speak Fulani in about 20 countries, and a proper alphabet would be widely used. So, the Barry brothers—who were only 10 and 14 years old at the time—would spend their afternoons drawing shapes to stand for Fulani sounds. Their alphabet was so successful that it was eventually taught in Fulani schools. In 2016, the Microsoft company even got
involved by making it possible to type using the new alphabet.

(江苏省新高考基地学校 2023 年大联考 3 月模拟试题 )
In spring 2015, after 39 years with Columbia Pictures, I retired and found myself with lots of free time to
spare.
I decided to use that time to volunteer. While tutoring with the adult literacy(识字)program at my local library, a flyer (传单)for a neighborhood group called Westchester Villages caught my eye. Its main job is about matching
aging neighbors with local volunteers who help them in a number of different ways: Making short visits, being a
walking partner, or driving to doctors’ appointments and the like.

Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less
stress.
Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard Yes, however, getting rid of this tree
standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible.
D .acceptance, instead of resistance, is the better way to be
根据第二段“falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls (头骨) of you, your children, your neighbors and those that reside next door to them. (掉落的果实会和棒球一样坚硬, 可能伤到你、孩子、邻居和 那些住在隔壁的人的脑袋。)”可知, 作者在果园里劳动时, 会佩戴一个自行车头盔, 是为了保护头部不会被
树上掉落的坚硬果实砸伤,故选 C 项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段“The black walnut also releases a chemical substance through its roots as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous to several common plants. (作为一种竞争策略, 黑胡桃也会通过根部释放一种化学物质。 它对几种常见的植物来说是有毒性的。)”可知, 黑胡桃树的生存策略就是释放一种对其他一些常见植物物种
有毒的物质,以独占生存资源。故选 C 项。
30 .细节理解题。根据第四段“Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less stress. (这个地区的原生植物通常很容易生长, 所以它们承受的压力较小。)”可知, 在这个果园中, 黑胡桃树 在与当地原生植物的生存竞争中并未占据优势,原生植物长势繁荣,这并非是作者对黑胡桃树又爱又恨的
原因之一。故选 B 项。
31 .推理判断题。根据倒数第三段“Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. (我有没有想过摆脱 这个小小的后院的大麻烦吗?是的,然而,要摆脱这棵 50 英尺高、树干只有 87 英寸的树几乎是不可能 的。)”和最后一段“I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires. (我就与这棵 树相伴, 所以我会倾听它的需求, 给它所需的空间。)”可知, 作者从这棵树身上得到了这样启示:包容接纳,
而非抗拒,会让生活更美好。故选 D 项

Understanding Your Feelings Helps You Name And Tame (驯服) Them
We all experience various feelings all the time. Some of them feel great, some feel unpleasant, and it’s helpful
to be able to recognize and understand how you’re feeling so you know how to deal with it.
36 They can include anger, sadness, worry, loneliness and shame, as well as surprise, happiness,
courage and hope, among many others. 37 All feelings are there to be felt and some can be more
uncomfortable than others. It’s OK and natural to experience different emotions – and that includes emotions that
might not feel nice.
To deal with your feelings you need to recognize what they are. 38 Are your fists clenched (攥紧)
Does it seem like there’s a knot in your stomach Next, pay attention to what you’re thinking at this time.
39 Or are you thinking that you really don’t want to do something Once you have identified how you’re
feeling, you can label it by saying, for example, “I’m feeling angry” or “I’m feeling lonely” .
You can understand a difficult feeling and help yourselfto handle it. 40 If you’re upset about a
difficult feeling, like “I’m feeling angry”, you might count to ten to calm down. Perhaps you notice “I’m feeling nervous”, and you might talk to someone about it. The person you talk to may be able to give you reassurance, more information, a different point of view, or even help you take action to deal with the cause of your difficult
feeling.
A. Experts call this “name it to tame it” .
B. How can you deal with different feelings
C. Perhaps you have the thought, “It’s not fair” .
D. Feelings are how people experience emotions.
E. First of all, notice what’s going on with your body.
F. They are shown through various body movements, to begin with.
G. Feelings are sometimes labelled as good or bad but that isn’t helpful.
【答案】36. D 37. G 38. E 39. C 40. A
本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍的是处理不太好的感觉的办法。
36D【解析】空格后说“They can include anger, sadness, worry, loneliness and shame, as well as surprise, happiness, courage and hope, among many others.(它们可能包括愤怒、悲伤、担心、孤独和羞耻,也可能包括惊喜、快 乐、勇气和希望,等等。)”,空格处应引出各种各样的感觉,D 选项“Feelings are how people experience emotions.(感觉是人们体验情绪的方式。)”引出了什么是感觉,后文对其作具体说明,因此 D 选项引起下文,
符合语境,故选 D。
37G【解析】空格后说“All feelings are there to be felt and some can be more uncomfortable than others.(所有的感 觉都可以被感受到, 有些感觉可能比其他感觉更不舒服。)”,说明感觉不分好坏, G 选项“Feelings are sometimes labelled as good or bad but that isn’t helpful.(感觉有时被贴上好或坏的标签,但这并没有什么帮助。)”说明不
能简单地说感觉是好或坏,和空后内容呼应,因此 G 选项承上启下,符合语境,故选 G。
38E【解析】由后文的“Next, pay attention to what you’rethinking at this time.(接下来, 注意这个时候你在想什
么。)”可知, 空格处应说“首先该干什么” ,E 选项“First of all, notice what’s going on with your body.(首先, 注
意你的身体状况。)”说明了首先要干什么。且其中的“what’s going on with your body(你的身体状况)”和空格 后的“Are your fists clenched (攥紧) Does it seem like there’s a knot in your stomach (你握紧拳头了吗?你的胃
好像有点难受吗? )”相呼应,空后就是说的身体的情况,因此 E 选项承上启下,符合语境,故选 E。
39C【解析】空格前说“Next, pay attention to what you’rethinking at this time.(接下来, 注意这个时候你在想什 么。)”,因此空格处应提到你可能的想法, C 选项“Perhaps you have the thought, “It’s not fair”.(也许你会想, “这
不公平” 。)”说明了你的可能的想法,因此 C 选项承接上文,符合语境,故选 C。
40A【解析】空格后说“If you’re upset about a difficult feeling, like “I’m feeling angry”, you might count to ten to calm down. Perhaps you notice “I’m feeling nervous”, and you might talk to someone about it.(如果你因为一种困 难的感觉而难过, 比如“我很生气” ,你可能会数到十来冷静下来。也许你注意到“我感到紧张” ,你可能会和 别人谈论这件事。)”,因此这里是在说人如何处理这些感觉,A 选项“Experts call this “name it to tame it”.(专 家称之为“给它命名并驯服它”。)”说明了人会识别出感觉, 并想办法解决它, 因此 A 选项承上启下, 符合语
境,故选 A。

【答案】Para. 1:
Ifingered the useless toy truck in my pocket. It couldn’t float on the water all the way out to the ocean. I
ducked my head and blinked back tears. “My truck couldn’t sail out to sea. It couldn’t do anything. ” I said. A
frown now stood on my face. I took it out and held it on my lap. Marie leaned over and took the truck in her hands.
I looked up at her trustingly. She didn’t say anything for a moment, and I started to lose hope.
Para. 2:
Then, she looked at me with a sparkle in her eyes. “This... ” she proclaimed, “is a magical truck!” I gave her a hopeful smile, wiping my eyes with the back of my hand. “A magical flying truck! I bet it could get to China even
faster than my canoe!” Inspired by her fancy, I started to tell how my flying truck would go through the sky and
arrive in China. Content in the sunlight, with my toes in the mud, I listened to Marie and let our imaginations run
far, far away.
