The Boy Made it!
One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a bad snowstorm happened. Unable to see far, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water or a phone. He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to worry too much. He thought about all of the survival(幸存者) shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips(提示) he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find a shelter(躲避处)from the cold wind and snow. If he didn’t, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.
Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave(洞穴). Then he put branches(树枝)on top of himself to keep himself warm.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby river so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could—he slept in his cave.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He then returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas had often watched Gryll’s survival show Man vs.Wild. That’s where he learned how to save his life.
When Grylls heard about Nicholas’ amazing experience, he was very surprised that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.

Cookie Monster
“Cookie Monster Christopher, you’d better be careful. You eat too many cookies, and bad things happen to little boys who do that!” Christopher’s mother shouted. Christopher turned a deaf ear to these words. Then at dinner, he once again didn’t react when his mother shook her finger at him.
Christopher went to bed with his stomach full of cookies. Though he felt a little sick, he did not care—until morning. He woke for school and planned to take a shower as usual. But when Christopher saw himself in the mirror, he could not believe his eyes. Christopher turned into a big cookie! He still had arms and legs and a head, but his body was replaced with a cookie!
When Christopher’s mother saw him, she simply shook her head and said, “I told you so!” Then, she took a bite (咬) of him! At school, his science teacher, Ms Shortbread, broke off a piece of Christopher’s cookies body, too. Suddenly, Christopher’s whole class wanted a bite of Christopher’s cookie body.
Christopher couldn’t stop all the hungry people! His cookie body was getting smaller and smaller. If this went on, there would be nothing left of Cookie Monster Christopher. When school ended, Christopher ran all the way home, followed by cookie-hungry classmates the whole way. He ran straight to his room, locked the door, and hid under the covers (被子).
The next morning, Cookie Monster Christopher opened his eyes. He found his dog licking (舔) his feet. “No, Oreo!” he shouted. Christopher threw the covers off and was about to run away from Oreo when he realized that he came back to himself again! Christopher was no longer a cookie!

Special Friendship
Last year, I learned from a newspaper that some sick kids needed help. I phoned the newspaper and I was asked to help a little girl named Lisa, who had mental (心理的) illness.
A short time later, I went for a visit to Lisa. After having been at the mental hospital for years, she had recently been allowed to be at home. In the beginning, I did most of the talking. Over time, Lisa felt more comfortable little by little while I was present. Our weekly get-togethers usually meant sharing a cup of hot coffee, window shopping or taking slow walks in the country.
Lisa never discussed how she felt about our friendship, even after we completed our first year together. However, she knew she could always depend on (依赖) me.
Then one day I got a call from our volunteer group. “Mary, would you and Lisa like to be interviewed on a local TV news show ” Excited, I answered, “Wow! Let me discuss it with Lisa.” I didn’t think Lisa would be comfortable going on “live” television. But to my surprise, Lisa wanted to be interviewed, too.
At the interview, she said, “If I can help other people understand how important our friendship is, and how it has helped me, maybe they’ll volunteer, too. Mary, wouldn’t that be great ” With tears running down, we smiled at one another.
