M: Hi there! My name’s Peter Denison and I make my living by repairing old clocks and watches. I’m here to tell you about my work. Most people think my interest in clocks and watches must come from a family tradition. Actually, my father was a farmer who liked animals perhaps because my grandfather was a doctor for animals. But growing up, I was always fixing bikes and taking things like radios to bits. One day when I was 12, I took my parents’ clock to bits and discovered the clock was actually beautifully made inside. After leaving school, I did a course about the art of designing clocks. I did well and went on to get a job in London afterwards. But I didn’t like city life, so I decided to go home and set up my own workshop in the country. I began working in a corner of an old factory. Actually, I’ve spent my entire adult life working on my own in little rooms. I once worked in a wooden shelter in a small garden. Now my workplace is a little office behind a shop. For me, clocks are something which connects us to the past. I’m devoted to repairing things and keeping old things going. I often work with old clocks from the period between 1850 and 1950.The oldest one I’ve worked on was an Italian night clock dating from 1650.

Four Cool Languages
Chinese
Around 1.4 billion people speak Chinese. Chinese is a tonal (声调的) language, meaning that changing the tone of just one syllable (音节) can affect a word’s meaning. Chinese writing has ancient roots, which is thought to have developed starting around 2000 B. C.
Arabic
Over 370 million people speak Arabic. Written Arabic uses a cursive-style font (连笔) that looks more like artworks than writing. Arabic is written from right to left rather than left to right, making it different from many other languages.
English
Around 379 million people speak English as a native language. It’s an official language in a huge number of other countries.
English is the most widely spoken second language, with over a billion people speaking it as a non-native language. That means around twice as many people speak English as a second language than people who speak it as a first language.
Italian
Nearly 68 million people speak Italian. If you play music or sing, chances are that you already know a lot of Italian because many familiar musical terms are actually Italian.
Not only will learning Italian help you pick up vocabulary, but it will also help you understand the meanings of musical terms in greater depth.

It was early winter several years ago. I had pulled out my old winter coat for another year’s use. It was still in pretty good shape although it was looking dirty from so many winters’ wear. I didn’t really need a new one but I wanted one and casually mentioned it to my daughter one day. She was such a sweet, loving girl that I should have guessed what would happen next. A few weeks later she gave me a new winter coat as a gift.
I put the old one in my closet and started to wear the new coat every day. Each day, though, when I opened my closet, something troubled me. It seemed a shame that my old but still good coat should just sit there keeping no one warm during the cold winter days. After a few weeks, I took it out and drove to a local charity shop. I knew that there was someone who couldn’t afford a coat but could get my old one.
My new coat is my old coat now. It is getting a little dirty and worn, too. It has black marks on the sleeves. It is in too bad shape to even donate to charity. I wonder if I should buy a new one soon, but I think I will wait for a while. I don’t really need a new one and maybe I can find something else to give to the charity shop instead.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never large enough to cover.” Perhaps the best way to deal with our wants then is to give instead. Love, after all, brings us the most joy. And the more of it you give away, the more of it you have.
24. Which word can best describe the author’s daughter
A. Wealthy. B. Thoughtful. C. Easy-going. D. Humorous.
25. Why was the author in shame when seeing his old coat in the closet
A. It cost too much. B. It was looking dirty.
C. There was not enough room for his new coat. D. It was not sent to someone in need.
26. What is the author’s decision after his second coat becomes old
A. Telling his daughter. B. Buying a new one soon.
C. Donating it to charity. D. Sending something else to charity.
27. What does the author want to show in the last paragraph
A. Giving fills our wants. B. Love is the key to joy.
C. The more you give, the more you lose. D. A coat is large enough to cover our wants.
B 25. D 26. D 27. A
根据第一段中的“I didn’t really need a new one but I wanted one and casually mentioned it to my daughter one day. She was such a sweet, loving girl that I should have guessed what would happen next. A few weeks later she gave me a new winter coat as a gift. (我并不是真的需要一件新的,但我想要一件,有一天我不经意地向女儿提起了这件事。她是一个如此亲切、和善的女孩,我应该猜到接下来会发生什么。几个星期后,她送给我一件新的冬季外套作为礼物)”可知,作者的女儿在他不经意地提到想要一件冬季外套后,很快就给他送了一件作为礼物。由此可知,女儿是体贴的。故选B项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Each day, though, when I opened my closet, something troubled me. It seemed a shame that my old but still good coat should just sit there keeping no one warm during the cold winter days. (然而,每天当我打开衣柜的时候,总有一些事情困扰着我。在寒冷的冬天,我那件旧的但仍然很好的外套就这么坐在那里,没有给任何人保暖,这似乎是一种遗憾)”结合下文作者把旧衣服捐到慈善机构可知,作者看到旧外套感到遗憾,是因为自己没把这件衣服送去帮助有需要的人。故选D项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“It is in too bad shape to even donate to charity. (它的状况太糟糕了,甚至无法捐赠给慈善机构)”和“I don’t really need a new one and maybe I can find something else to give to the charity shop instead. (我真的不需要新的,也许我可以找点别的东西捐给慈善商店)”可知,第二件旧外套糟糕到无法捐赠,于是作者决定找别的物品送往慈善机构。故选D项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never large enough to cover.” Perhaps the best way to deal with our wants then is to give instead. Love, after all, brings us the most joy. And the more of it you give away, the more of it you have. 故选A项。
C
Soccer, basketball, baseball, and the like are popular all around the world, However, do you look for something a bit different There may be some new sports that you want to try out!

Of course, the competitors dress up to play the role, too.
Cheese rolling race is not seen very often, but it is exciting. This is a game that is extremely funny for audience, but painful for competitors. There are two kinds of people: those who like to pack up leftovers as soon as dinner is over, and those who let leftovers sit out for a few hours so they can cool down.
However, both leaving leftovers out for a long period of time and adding hot items to the fridge can cause problems.
Whether you should immediately put food in the fridge or let it sit out to cool depends on its temperature. Dangerous bacterial (细菌的) growth happens between 41 and 135 degrees F. Potentially harmful bacteria grows most rapidly at these temperatures.
Placing lots of hot food in the fridge can raise the temperature of the fridge into this danger zone. Fridge temperatures should always be set below 40 degrees F. This may help the food get out of the danger zone as fast as possible.
However, there’s no harm in putting hot food directly into the fridge if you need to. If you are a forgetful person, or if you won’t be around to store the food after it has cooled enough, go ahead and put it in the fridge. Your fridge can handle the heat and get the food cooled quickly.
Food should never stay out at room temperature for more than two hours. Leftovers can become breeding grounds (滋生地) for dangerous bacteria if they’re left out too long and can make people sick.
“It is OK to leave the food cooling outside before you hit the two-hour mark,” says Serena Poon, nutritionist of Le Cordon Bleu’s Grand Diploma training program. “In fact, the sooner you can get your leftovers in the fridge, the better.”
32. Which temperature most contributes to the growth of harmful bacteria
A. Below 40 degrees F. B. Between 39~40 degrees F.
C. Between 41~135 degrees F. D. Above 135 degrees F.
33. What is the author’s attitude towards putting hot food directly into the fridge
A. Unclear. B. Neutral. C. Worried. D. Unconcerned.
34. What does Serena Poon suggest doing about the leftovers
A. Dividing them into small parts.
B. Storing them in the fridge right away.
C. Waiting until they cool down completely outside.
D. Leaving them sitting at room temperature for two hours.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. When to Pack up Leftovers. B. How to Prevent Bacterial Growth
C. To Cool Food Outside or in the Fridge D. A Good Idea to Store Food in the Fridge
C 33. B 34. B 35. C
根据第三段中“Dangerous bacterial (细菌) growth happens between 41 and 135 degrees F. Potentially harmful bacteria grows most rapidly at these temperatures.”(危险的细菌在华氏41度到135度之间生长,潜在的有害细菌在这个温度下生长得最快。)
根据第二段“However, both leaving leftovers out for a long period of time and adding hot items to the fridge can cause problems.”(然而,把剩菜长时间放在外面和把热的东西放进冰箱都会引起问题。)和第五段中“However, there’s no harm in putting hot food directly into the fridge if you need to.”(然而,如果你需要的话,把热的食物直接放进冰箱也没什么坏处。)
根据最后一段““It is OK to leave the food cooling outside before you hit the two-hour mark,” says Serena Poon, nutritionist of Le Cordon Bleu’s Grand Diploma training program. “In fact, the sooner you can get your leftovers in the fridge, the better.””(蓝带厨艺学院高级文凭培训项目的营养学家瑟琳娜·潘说:“在两小时之前把食物放在外面冷却是可以的。”“事实上,越早把剩菜放进冰箱越好。”)可知,潘瑟琳建议尽快将剩菜放在冰箱冷却。故选B项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第一段“There are two kinds of people: those who like to pack up leftovers as soon as dinner is over, and those who let leftovers sit out for a few hours so they can cool down.”(有两种人:一种人喜欢一吃完饭就把剩菜打包,另一种人喜欢把剩菜放在外面放几个小时,让它们冷却下来。)

“You’re fired!” Andrew Chilton wasn’t joking. At that moment, the high school junior wanted his personal care attendant, Christy Chachere, out of his life forever. He didn’t want her help any more. He thought he could write his own term papers. “You’re fired!” He said it again.
Christy Chachere, a retired PE teacher, didn’t take a step back. She believed she could do this job. “You know, I’ve taught middle schoolers,” she said. What about Andrew’s outcry It was music to her ears. Progress was faster than expected.
When Andrew suffered from autism (自闭症) at age eight, people told his mom, Cindy, to get him on the list for an attendant to provide after-school care. Someone would drive him to places and see that he was safe. In New Orleans, Louisiana, the wait can be years, the need far outstrips (超过) the supply. Cindy had no choice but to turn to the program Volunteers of America for help.
Even so, it was eight years before they were matched with Christy. In the meantime. Andrew’s family did their best to help him get through life’s hardships. “I did worry about him,” said Cindy. There was a lot to worry about. Doctors and school teachers said that Andrew might not even graduate from high school. Other questions were around the corner as well. Would he ever have a job, or live independently …Cindy would do anything for her son.
Christy saw the problem right away. “Andrew wouldn’t take a step without his mother’s permission (同意),”she recalled. “You have to let him fail,” she told the family. “It’s the only way he’s going to learn. He has to be able to do things on his own.”
No longer would Cindy help Andrew write papers. His younger brother wouldn’t help him with the computer, either. It was a little unacceptable to step back. Actually, everyone was on board but Andrew.

Andrew was filled with anger, but things began to change. Soon, Christy would no longer write Andrew’s papers for him and wouldn’t be helping him with homework either. Andrew would start on his homework after school. Christy patiently showed him how to get organized. And she coached him on how to deal with disappointment. Once his work was done, Christy offered freedom. She’d take him to the bookstore, the movies, or out to eat his favorite food.
“She understood me, and it turned out she was really nice.” Andrew said. One step at a time, Andrew gained independence. He graduated from high school and entered community college. He’s working toward an associate’s degree in video game design. He’s studying to get his learner’s permit to drive. Now, Andrew lives a normal life as everyone with delight. He says life has never been better. There is no doubt that Andrew and Christy have done it together.

21 What is a feature of Arabic
A. It doesn’t have cursive-style fonts. B. It helps artists with their artworks.
C. It is written from right to left. D. It is closely related to music.
22. Which language is the most widely used as a second language in the world
A. Arabic. B. English. C. Chinese. D. Italian.
23. What’s the number of people who speak Italian
A. Nearly 68 million. B. Around 370 million.
C. Over 379 million. D. Around 1.4 billion.

A Unclear. B. Neutral. C. Worried.
