In 2018, the town of Carefree, in the USA was seeking a pumpkin carver to help their newly-planned Enchanted Pumpkin Garden Festival become an instant success. Luckily for them, the sculptor Ray Villafane fell in love with the four-acre Carefree Desert Gardens and agreed to carve pumpkins for the tourists. Then, the festival became a hit in 2018. Now the annual event, which began to take place from October 19 to October 28, in 2011, includes many fun activities for both kids and adults. However, it is the pumpkin carvings that remain the star attraction.
This year, Villafane and his team reached the garden in early October to carve the popular “pickled pumpkins”. Placed inside tanks resembling some kinds of plants to fit in with the environment, the 3D pumpkin artworks were put in a special liquid that helped preserve them for a longer period of time.
Throughout the festival, Villafane and his team also held several live demonstrations, adding to the impressive carved pumpkins on exhibition. They also volunteered to give many pumpkin-carving fans valuable tips.
Besides the wonderful carvings, guests had the chance to go into a pumpkin world, complete with tales. The tales featured pumpkin dead bodies running through the grass, and a group of helpless pumpkins attempting to free their peers imprisoned by a scary-looking figure with only bones. Then, there were the hard-working rats who were sewing a pumpkin.
The highlight of the festival came on October 27, when Villafane transformed a huge pumpkin into a dinosaur. The festival also featured activities including pie-eating matches, story-telling, face painting, and pumpkin-carving matches.
Villafane’s skill first came to light in 1996 after he sculpted a pumpkin for his students during Halloween. In 2007, while still teaching, he decided to use his skills to create action figures for Marvel Comics. Over the next two years, the artist created numerous popular characters. In 2009, Villafane accepted a full-time position about carving toys at DC Comics. In 2013, he finally decided to go after his true love — pumpkin carving. Since he first began carving, the expert has sculpted 2,576 pieces of outstanding works in 102 cities around the world.
The expert using basic carving tools for his most complex creations stands out in the festival.

Most parents will remember their little ones grasping their leg or being unwilling to speak to someone new. But when does this stop being a natural part of a child’s growing up and become something to worry about
Here, Heidi Gazelle, a senior lecturer in developmental psychology from the University of Melbourne, explains how shyness is of more concern if it is persistent rather than temporary.
Shyness with other children is of more concern than shyness with adults. It is common for children to be on the alert for adults, particularly men, but less common for children around their own age.
Children who engage in very little social interaction in comparison to children of their age are missing out on these important cumulative learning experiences. As a result, their social cognition, social skills and sense of self may be less mature than those of other children around their age.
Being excluded and bullied is damaging children’s emotional health and sense of self, especially when these conditions persist over time. Children need help from adults to stop exclusion and being bullied by other children. When parents become aware that their child is being excluded or bullied by other children at a childcare center or a school, they should contact the childcare center or school on their child’s behalf.
Shyness is of concern if it interferes with your child’s or family’s routines or activities, or if your child often appears miserable or complains of being lonely. For instance, if shyness prevents your child from attending other children’s birthday parties or school, or prevents your family from visiting friends, then you should consider seeking help from a child psychologist.
If a child is upset about a problem with a friend, parents can encourage the child to try to resolve the problem in a way that preserves the friendship, instead of ending the friendship, as well as encourage the child to develop other friendships.
8. What view does Heidi Gazelle hold with regards to shy children

①Social skills. ②Sense of self. ③Overall intelligence. ④Power of observation. ⑤Social cognition.
A. ①③⑤ B. ②④⑤ C. ②③④ D. ①②⑤
10. How should parents respond when their child is excluded or bullied
A. Consider transferring their child to another school or childcare center.
B. Get in touch with the childcare center or school.
C. Warn the children who bully their child.
D. Try to find his or her own faults.
11. When do parents need to care about their child’s shyness
A. Their child often complains about being lonely.
B. Their child is always ready to visit their relatives.
C. Their child wants to change the family’s original plan.
D. Their child is willing to attend other children’s birthday parties.

TOKYO-Japan marked the 78th anniversary of the atomic bombing in its western city of Hiroshima (广岛) on August 6th amid growing calls for Tokyo to reflect on crimes the Japanese army committed during World War II. At a memorial ceremony held at the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui delivered the Peace Declaration, urging world leaders to stop believing in the theory that nuclear weapons can prevent war.
“They must immediately take concrete steps to lead us from the dangerous present toward our ideal world,” said Matsui, who also urged policymakers to “move toward a security system based on trust through dialogue in pursuit of civil society ideals”. “Mistrust and division are on the rise,” warned United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his message readout at the ceremony.
A moment of silence was observed at 8:15 am local time, the exact moment when an atomic bomb dropped from a US bomber and exploded over the city on Aug.6, 1945, killing around 140,000 people by the end of that year.
At the event which about 50,000 people attended, Matsui placed in a monument a list of the names of 339,227 victims, including 5,320 deaths confirmed last year. “Japan must immediately sign the Treaty (条约) on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons,” Matsui noted in the Peace Declaration, further urging the government to heed the wishes of survivors from the bombing and the peace-loving Japanese people.
The number of survivors of the two atomic bombings including Nagasaki with an average age of over 85, has dropped by 5,346 from a year earlier to 113,649 as of March, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida spoke at the ceremony, saying an atomic bomb made more than 100,000 lose their lives without mentioning whether Japan would sign the treaty, let alone (更不用说) the historical background of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
The prime minister was criticized for hosting the Group of Seven leaders' summit in Hiroshima in May.
While Japan inwardly looks at the tragedies it experienced at the end of WWII, historians and political minds of the international community have encouraged Japan to come to see itself not only as a victim of the atomic bombings but also as the criminal (罪犯) who was involved in these tragic incidents in the first place.
12. Why was the moment of silence was observed at 8:15 am local time
A. It was the time when the atomic bombing happened in Hiroshima.
B. It was the time when the atomic bombing happened in Nagasaki.
C. It was the time when the US bomber reached Japan.
D. It was the time when the US bomber took off.
13. What is the possible meaning of the underlined word “heed” in paragraph 4
A. Make fun of. B. Put up with. C. Take delight in. D. Pay attention to.
14 What did Japanese Prime Minister mention in his speech
A. Japan's signing the treaty.
B. The result of the atomic bombing.
C. America should make up for the loss.
D. The background of the atomic bombing.
15. What can be the best title for the news report
A. Number of survivors of two atomic bombings drops in Japan
B. Japan — a victim of atomic bombings that kill so many people
C. Japan marks 78th anniversary of atomic bombing of Hiroshima
D. Hiroshima Mayor expresses nuclear weapons can't prevent war
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. C

How to Help Kids Save Our Oceans and Be Environmental Heroes
The world’s oceans benefit us in many different ways. ___16___ We need clean and healthy oceans to protect our own health and to support future generations. Here are some simple ways to encourage children to protect our oceans.
●Do a local clean-up
Beach, lake or river clean-ups are a great way to get children involved in keeping our environment free from rubbish. Even a local park will benefit from a clean-up. Less trash in the environment in general is less trash that could get washed away in our bodies of water. Gather the family to pick up rubbish together. ___17___.
●Reuse disposed (废弃的) items
A great way to get kids involved in recycling is to encourage them to find other uses for old items. Instead of throwing something away, help them turn it into art!
___18___. The children took a trip to the local beach and were encouraged to pick up different types of rubbish that could be turned into artwork. “Trash isn’t just trash, because you can create loads of things with it. It ends up not being trash anymore, but a beautiful piece of art,” one of the children said.
●___19___
More than 70 percent of the plastic we use does not get recycled, and a lot of this plastic waste is swept into our oceans. Cutting down on plastic use is important if we are to protect our oceans.
Often, pre-packaged fruits and vegetables at supermarkets are a big source of single-use plastic. Getting kids interested in growing their own food is a fun and educational way to cut down on plastic use and shorten supply chains of foods. Besides, educate kids to use as little plastic as possible.
●Eat sustainably sourced fish
___20___. Unsustainable fishing practices threaten the food security of these communities, both by taking away these marine (海洋的) resources but also by harming their life. You can help by eating fish that are rich in the sea.
A. Reduce plastic use
B. Yet, our oceans are being heavily polluted
C. Plastic is a material produced from oil by a chemical process
D. The kids will really see the difference it makes to an area that they play in
E. Fish is an essential part of a balanced diet for many people across the globe

Gather the family to pick up rubbish together.(清理海滩、湖泊或河流是让孩子们参与保护我们的环境远离垃圾的好方法。

Dear editor,
I’d like to tell you a meaningful day in my life. Last week, we paid a visit to a nursing home. It was Saturday and the sun was shining all day. With the intention of caring for the old, my classmates and I decided to visit the nursing home nor far from our school. The moment we got there, we began to clean the rooms and washed clothes for the old. Then we started to sweep the ground of the yard. Just two hours later, the whole yard was spotless.
As far as I am concerned, this experience is significant. For one thing, we helped with something the old couldn’t do on their own. For another, a tidy and comfortable environment was also provided for them, making them full of delight. It was through this labor that I fully realized that the awareness of respecting and helping the old should be raised.
Yours sincerely,

On a cold winter evening, I, together with my 6-year-olds on Bob, was on our way home, heading towards a bridge, when I heard some strange noise ahead.
As we approached the bridge, dusk was starting to fall and I could see a figure lying on the bridge floor, uncomfortably close to the railing (栏杆) of the bridge. It was a young man, clearly in great pain, crying and shouting, and his whole body was shaking. I was shocked, and suddenly realized the serious situation. The bridge ran over a high-speed train track and was a well-known death trap. A local family had lost their teenager in that exact place a few weeks earlier.
I quickly looked around but there was no one else nearby. I knew I wouldn't be able to live with myself if his death was reported the next day and I'd done nothing about that.
Without any hesitation, I inched towards the figure, and little Bob followed quietly on my side. I asked the young man if I could sit down, and then lowered myself on to the bridge floor opposite him. I tried a few gentle questions, asking, “What's your name How old are you What do you do ” His answers were rather simple, which were “Tom. 21. Computers.”
“Are you OK ” I asked. “No, I'm not!” He shouted back. He said something about a betrayal (背叛), and not knowing what to do. His emotions were changing wildly. I tried to make a connection, so It old him my name, where I lived, and how I was a mother of two children. After asking him where he went to college, I pretended to be amazed that my niece (侄女) had studied there, too. I told him that his life was very valuable and the betrayal was just one tiny part of it. I even found myself telling the story of Neil Lay bourn, who had persuaded a man to be down from Waterloo Bridge in London, “They're great friends now and have even run a marathon together for charity,” I said. “Who knows That could be us.” I kept talking gently and eagerly.”

【答案】I thought a train could come at any time. I knew the challenge time was coming. I kept talking gently and eagerly to take his mind off the betrayal. But his emotions were getting more and more wildly. The train was in. We had to run for it. Quick as thought, I pulled him off the bridge. I exerted my utmost strength. After that, we slumped on the side of the road without a word.
Then I broke the silence. I suggested he phone his parents at once. He corrugated his brows in thought and he didn’t want his parents to know about it. "Life is short, only virtue can put it to the distant future." I said, "This is a well-known saying from Shakespeare’s, I hope this saying will help you and now the only thing you have to do is forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching to those things which are before." Suddenly he cried, he was moved by my sincerity. We embraced each other and formed a deep friendship.

On a cold winter evening, I, together with my 6-year-olds on Bob, was on our way home, heading towards a bridge, when I heard some strange noise ahead.
As we approached the bridge dusk was starting to fall and I could see a figure lying on the bridge floor, uncomfortably close to the railing (栏杆) of the bridge.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
I thought a train could come at any time.
