Rock climbing has been a popular sport for a long
time. It's still popular today, but now a lot of rock
climbers are trying something new: ice climbing.
Ice climbing is a lot like rock climbing. When you
go rock climbing, you climb a mountain. When you go
ice climbing, you climb ice. Some ice climbers climb
frozen waterfalls. Others climb glaciers(冰川).
As people made better equipment, ice climbing
started to become easier and more popular. In 1908, a
climber made special boots called "crampons". These boots made ice climbing easier and safer. After that,
more people were willing to try ice climbing. In the 1960s, another climber invented special axes. Climbers
can use the axes to hit the ice. The axes go into the ice. Then the climber can pull himself or herself up.
These days, a lot of people are taking ice climbing classes. In order to go ice climbing, you have to be
strong and healthy. In fact, some teachers say that you should do special exercises before you start to climb.
Here's one good thing about ice climbing. You can do it in easy places or difficult places. People who
want to try something simple can climb glaciers or small mountains. Those are usually pretty easy. People
who want to try something more challenging can find a more difficult place. The hardest places are usually
steep mountains and frozen waterfalls. However, you should never go ice climbing alone. You should
always go with a teacher.
A lot of people love ice climbing because it is hard. These people like to challenge themselves. Some
say that when you get to the top of a glacier or a frozen waterfall, it's the best feeling in the world.
34. Why did ice climbing become easier
A. Equipment got better.
B. Mountains got smaller.
C. People got stronger.
D. There were more ice climbing classes.
35. What was invented in the 1960s
A. Special boots. B. Special axes. C. Pockets. D. Gloves.
36. In line 1 of the last paragraph, what does "it" refer to
A. a person B. a challenge C. ice climbing D. rock climbing
37. What would be a good title for this article
A. A New Kind of Axe B. Let's Climb Some Ice
C. All about Mountain Climbing D. The Easiest Sport in the World

Very large numbers often appear in what may seem a very simple problem at first sight, and you may
think that problem is only several thousands.
King Shirham of India suffered a lot from these very big numbers. The king wanted to reward(奖赏)
his minister Sissa Ben Dahir for inventing and presenting to him the games of chess. What the minister
wanted seemed to be very small. He said to the king, "My dear King, please give me a grain of wheat(小麦)
to put on the first square of this chessboard, and two grains to put on the second square, and four grains to
put on the third, and eight grains to put on the fourth, and so forth, up to the last square of the chessboard.
And double(把……增加一倍 ) the number of grains for each succeeding square, and give me enough
grains to cover all the 64 squares of the chessboard."
"You do not ask for much," said the king. He thought silently that his reward to the inventor of the
wonderful game would not cost him much of his treasure. "Your wish will certainly be satisfied." And he
ordered a bag of wheat fo be brought to him.
But when the counting began, with 1 grain for the first square, 2 for the second, 4 for the third and so
forth, the bag was emptied before the 12th square was reached. More bags of wheat were brought before
the king but the number of grains needed for each succeeding square increased very fast. Soon it became
clear that with all the wheat of India, the king could not fulfil his promise to Sissa Ben. To do so would
have needed 18, 446, 744, 073, 709, 551, 615 grains!
King Shirham found himself deep in debt to him and had either to sell his country to satisfy him or to
cut his head off. We guess that the king chose to cut his head off to solve his difficulty.
38.The king wanted to reward his minister because he_____.
A. played the chess best
B. taught him how to play the chess
C. collected two beautiful chessboards for him
D. invented and presented to him the games of chess
39. What did the king find out at last
A. The minister sold his country.
B. He could not keep his promise.
C. The minister broke the promise at last.
D. His country could not plant wheat any more.
40. What did the king probably do to his minister at last, according to the passage
A. He probably killed him.
B. He probably gave him large amounts of wheat.
C. He probably sold him his country.
D. He probably asked him to burn the chessboard.
41. What can we learn from the passage
A. A large number can be a few thousands.
B. To count large numbers is only a simple job.
C. A difficult problem at first sight may become a simple one at last.
D. A small number at first sight may become a very large number at last.

What's a classic When you re-read a classic you do not see more in the book than you did before; you
see more in you than you did before.
In school we learn how to read. At the same time, we learn to hate to read the things worth reading
most! It happened to me. The teacher assigned Pickwick Papers. I didn't want to read it. So I fought it. I
disliked it. I thought I won. But I lost. I tried hard to keep away from Pickwick Papers, but this let me lose
all the good things that can come from getting near to those few books we call the "classics". I've come
back to Pickwick Papers on my own since. I like it. And I have discovered a new level of pleasure from it
with each reading.
I come back to this question: what is a classic A classic is a book that gives you wonderful feeling,
and enables you to uncover part of the meaning of life. A classic is a book that has stood the test of time, a
book that men and women all over the world want to keep all their lives for its special enlightenment and
insights.
Not many books can stand such a test. Considering all the books that have been produced since man
first put chisel(凿子) to stone, classics account for only a very small share of the total - less than 0.001%.
That's just a few thousand books.
Why should you read the classics Why should you try to enjoy them
I suggest three reasons:
1. Classics open up your mind.
2. Classics help you grow.
3. Classics help you understand your life, your world, yourself.
The last one is the big one. A classic can help you go deep to understand yourself. Sure, you can get
pleasure out of almost any book. But a classic, once you go into it, lifts you up high! When you read
classics, go into them like bright human beings before you. You'll find yourself enlightened by thoughts and
observations of the most gifted writers in history.
Someone has said the classics are the diary of man. Open up the diary. Read about yourself - and
understand yourself.
42. The writer did not like _____.
A. classics at first B. Pickwick Papers at all
C. classics from childhood D. all classics except Pickwick Papers
43. The sentence "But I lost." (para. 2) most probably means that the writer _____.
A. lost the book Pickwick Papers
B. lost a lot of good things by disliking the book
C. could not follow the story line of Pickwick Papers
D. could not get anything from reading Pickwick Papers
44. Which of the following is NOT included in the reasons given by the writer
A. Classics help you wide your mind. B. Classics help you understand your life.
C. Classics help you understand yourself. D. Classics help you understand your culture.
45. What advice does the writer give about how to read classics
A. We should read them with all our heart.
B. We should choose the easy ones to read first.
C. We shouldn’t choose the best ones to read first.
D. We shouldn’t read like some people living before us.

How can we keep food fresh for a long time Put it in a fridge! However, fridges are actually a recent
invention. How did people keep their food fresh in old times
In the days of hunter-gatherers, any food that was hunted(打猎) or collected was eaten straight away.
Slowly, ancient people gave up going hunting for food all the time, so the situation started to change.
46 In the Middle Ages, people dug holes in walls or in the ground to keep their food for future
use. The food was often put in wooden(木制的) boxes.
47 The chemical fridges were developed and brought to the market in 1834. Ferdinand
Carre improved the early fridges in 1859. However, many families didn't choose to use these fridges at their
homes. 48 In addition, many families didn't have electricity at that time. Most people still stored
food in wooden boxes that had ice in them. 49 This explains where the word "icebox" comes
from. We still use this word today to refer to fridges.
It wasn't until the 1950s that fridges really took off in Germany. People no longer had to shop daily.
Many people began to call fridges their "best friends".
The improvement in technology has helped fridges become smaller and more affordable. 50
What's more, they have also become more environmentally friendly.
A. They were too expensive and too big.
B. These wooden boxes were much cheaper.
C. They are able to keep food fresh for a longer time.
D. In 1748, man-made cooling was first shown by William Cullen.
