Renting a bike is not only one of the most pleasant ways to travel around the back streets of London, it’s also one of the cheapest. Approximately 12,000 bikes are available to rent 24 hours a day, all year round. You can hire a bike from any of the 800 docking stations and return it anywhere on the network. Smartphone users can now use an iOS or Android app to hire and pay for a hike. However, using the app does not reserve a bike. You still only have 10 minutes to use the release code, so make sure you’re near the docking station when you use it.

We’ve seen such scenes often: Needy families lining up for a bag of daily necessities—dry foodstuff, cooking essentials, basic toiletries (化妆品). But Foo Say Thye, 56-year-old co-founder of local volunteer group Heart warmers, observed one common occurrence at these donation drives: Whenever beneficiaries (受益者) receive the bags, most would seem shy and unwilling to talk and would leave the venue almost immediately.
Mk realized that it is important not just to meet the physical needs of beneficiaries, but also consider their mental and emotional state as well. Foo Say Thye said that he wanted to take such goodie bag distribution a step further. That’s why the group came up with Project 100=50.
“When we give bags of groceries to families, these are default (默认) items donated by the organizers. Project 100=50 allows participants to choose whatever they need and what they actually want,” says Say Thye.
Project 100=50 is a community service event that supports low-to middle-income families by creating a “mini supermarket” where beneficiaries can choose to buy what they need at highly discounted prices. It partners with local supermarket group Sheng Siong, which supplies these groceries to Heartwarmers at a special rate.
Discounts are either capped (限额收取) at 50% if beneficiaries spend $100 or less or at $50 if they spend more than §100. Say Thye explains, “Providing them with a choice on what to get at reduced prices raises their self-esteem and self-confidence. It also promotes self-help when beneficiaries can start to pay for their own necessities.”
Every month, different Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) select low-to middle-income families who don’t qualify for financial assistance from the Government or agencies to attend Project 100=50 events. Different GRCs use different criteria to choose the beneficiaries.
Volunteer Tan Jun An, 21, says that these ‘‘sandwiched” families are stuck in between categories. “Like my own family, we are stuck in between. You’re neither rich nor poor,” he says. “Because you don’t fall in any other group, you cannot receive any benefits. So, this project helps the ‘sandwiched’”.

Traditional Chinese culture featured noticeably in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Hangzhou Asian Games. While they stressed the solar terms, the he-he culture, meaning harmony and cooperation, was a common thread that ran through them.
Each of the 24 solar terms coincides with (与……一致) events in the natural world. The terms were put forward more than 2,000 years ago to guide not only agricultural activities, but also customs concerning food, dressing and social life. “I previously had no connection to Hangzhou, but now, after the closing ceremony, I think I share a special bond with this city, said Wan Li, a 22-year-old college student at Fujian Normal University. “Watching the ceremony was also a wonderful chance for me to learn about the he-he culture, in which I was uninterested before.”
Kong Xianglong, a research assistant who worked in Hangzhou on an Asian Games research program and watched the ceremonies, expressed his admiration for the show as well as the Asian Games volunteers, who he said were walking examples of the he-he culture.
“The dance performances were absolutely attractive, a perfect display of the he-he idea and a highlight of the Asian Games,” Kong told Beijing Review. “The considerate service the volunteers provided every day actually invited people to learn about the he-he culture, which moved me a lot.”
Pakistani cricketer Muhammad said he believes that the opening and closing ceremonies played an important role in bringing people from different countries together. “I saw a lot of different countries’ athletes coming together, sharing their cultures and performing. I see a huge success,” he told Xinhua News Agency.

When food items are specifically labeled as vegan (素食) —indicating they are prepared with no animal products, including eggs or butter—people are less likely to select them, even though it is better for the planet and for their health, according to a recent experiment.
Growing and transporting food accounts for a quarter of all global greenhouse gas emissions, which are accelerating the climate crisis. Of these, the vast majority come from processes linked to meal and dairy production, which is why experts are advising societies to shift toward more plant-based eating.
“We have to make big changes to how we produce and consume food if we want to reach climate goals and feed Earth’s ever-growing population,” says Richard Waite, an expert on food climate policy. But the study at MIT indicates this may prove challenging.
Researchers asked some 150 people attending several university events to choose their lunch between two options, one of them vegan. Choices included vegetable vs. cheese ravioli (奶酪馄饨) and a vegetable potato wrap vs. a Greek salad with feta (羊乳酪). A similar study of meal preferences was also conducted online. Half the respondents in both studies randomly received an order form in which the vegan item was labeled. When this vegan terminology (术语) was used, people were less likely to order the dish than when it was not. For the in-person attendees, some two-thirds more avoided the dish. After the research was published, some people told the study’s lead author, Alex Berke, a doctoral student at MIT’s Media Lab, the results were unexpected. But she anticipated the outcome. Berke herself began eating vegetarian diet—a plant-based one that includes dairy and eggs—at age 10 and adopted a vegan diet three years ago to help the climate. “Anyone who has been eating vegan for a while would not he surprised at the findings,” says Berke. “Because there is a strong bias among people when it comes to vegetarian diet.”
Environmentalists are clear they are not urging everyone to become vegetarians, but, if possible, to include more plant-based meals. “If you shift a third of your beef consumption to beans and soy, you reduce the climate impact of your diet by about 15 percent, one environmentalist says.
