A car should have appropriate signs to indicate its manufacturer,model,engine power,load quality,engine and vehicle factory number,etc.The signs can help sellers,users,maintenance staff,traffic administrative organ discriminate its “identification”.According to China's traffic regulations,these signs must be checked during a new vehicle's registration and annual inspection.The marks of an automobile are usually made up of trademark or factory standard,product label,engine model and serial number,vehicle model and serial number and vehicle identification code and so on.

Automobile trademark (Fig.1-1) or emblem mark is an important indicator of motor vehicles.It is divided into two major categories as patterns and letters. Pattern logo often has some historical implication.For example,Benz trident star logo implies that three private companies were merged into Mercedes-Benz company.Also as for BMW logo,letter BMW is on behalf of the Bavarian Aircraft Engine Manufacturing company,the blue and white pattern shows a rotating aircraft propeller.Letter mark is very easy to understand.It is generally the acronym of an auto company founder.For example,Rolls-Royce is founded by brothers ROLLS and ROYCE,so its mark is letter RR.H-Model of Honda is acronym of Soichiro Honda ,a founder of Honda Motor Corporation.Letter VW is an abbreviation for Volks Wagen.In short,pattern-logo implies the establishing history of an automobile company and letter mark is an abbreviation for the name of a vehicle corporation.

Conventionally,in the front of car radiator hood or bonnet generally stands a clear and permanent mark.Most of car manufacturers use the factory standard as the car trademark,some using unique model trademarks,such as “Toyota Crown Royal” ,“Ford Mustang GT” (Fig.1-2) ,“Nissan President ”(Fig.1-3) and so on.In addition,in rear of an automobile (especially cars),generally equipped with car brand label and trademark expressed in words.In a word,automotive trademarks often make great impressions on people.So automobile manufacturers work on marks by well-designing,carving secret agents,repeating scrutiny,amending many times to represent their corporate images. Also car logo demonstrates different national culture and art style,records the history of an automobile company.Now let's look back to the development of automotive trademarks,enjoying a variety of joys and dreams that automotive trademarks bring to us.

Mercedes Benz
In June,1909,Daimler company applied to register in a 3-fork star(Fig.1-4) as its car flag,symbolizing mechanization of the land,water and air. In 1916,a circle circled the star,4 small stars were mounted on the top of the circle,under which was the written word “Mercedes”.“Mercedes” implies happiness or good fortune,that is to say,Daimler vehicles would bring happiness and good luck to its owners.

BMW (Fig.1-5) is the abbreviation of Bayerische Motor en Werhe AG (German).The blue and white pattern among BMW logo signifies the blue sky,white clouds and a rotating propeller,implying a long history of BMW Motor Company.It is not only a symbol of the past leadership of the company in aviation engine technology,but also a symbol of the company's principle aim and purpose.In the vast space and time,the company depends on its advanced technology and new ideas to meet customers' needs.It meanwhile reflects the vigorous momentum and ever-changing new look of the company.

Volks Wagenwerk
In German,Volks Wagenwerk (Fig.1-6),meaning their automobiles are provided for the broad masses of people to use. The VW logo is the heading letters for the full name. The pattern mark is made up of three “V” formed by middle fingers and index fingers,which symbolizes Volks Wagen company and its products will win-win-win.

Lincoln
Lincoln logo (Fig.1-7) is the second brand Ford Motor Company owned. The cross-shaped star circled by a rectangle embedded in the front centre is a symbol of dignity and solemnity.Lincoln Motor Company,which was purchased by Ford Motor Company in 1922,was founded by Henry Leland in 1907. Ford Motor Company developed its initial industry based on aircraft engines. Lincs,the first brand in the name of president,are luxury cars specially made for president and heads of state. As its outstanding performance,elegant style and unique comfort,Lincs has been elected as the presidential limousine to the White House since President Franklin Roosevelt used it in 1939.

Toyota's three oval logo (Fig.1-8) is used from the beginning in early 1990. The large oval sign is on behalf of the earth,the medial two sets into a T-vertical combination is on behalf of Toyota company. The whole mark symbolizes its confidence and ambition to the future and its guarantee to the customers. It's a symbol of user's heart and that of manufacturer linking with a sense of mutual trust. It also implies Toyota's superior technology and innovation potential.

Rolls-Royce
Rolls-Royce logo(Fig.1-9) adopts two overlapped “R” s to symbolize that “You have me” and “I have you”,reflecting a cordial and harmonious relationship between Charles Stewartrolls Rous and Henry Royce. In addition,there is also a famous flying goddess flag which was designed by an art master named Charles Sekers . The creative idea was derived from a victory goddess statue stood in the Louvre art corridor in Paris with two thousand years of history. Her dignified and noble posture is the source of passion artists can produce.

In 1947,Chung Ju Yung created Hyundai Motor Company. It now has become Korea's largest automobile manufacturers and entered the ranks of world famous cars corporations after 50 years of development. Its trademark is the use of italics “H”in an oval (Fig.1-10). “H” is the first capital letter for Hyundai Motor Company. Firstly,“Hyundai ”embodies the concept of “take-off in the world in 2000,Hyundai Motor Company”;secondly,it is also a symbol of harmony and stability in development. The oval mark which represents the car's steering wheel and can also be regarded as the earth,together with the intervened “H”,represents exactly Hyundai cars can go all over the world.

汽车的商标或厂标(图1-1),是汽车的重要标志。汽车的标志分为图案和字母两大类。图案车标大都具有一定的历史含义,比如奔驰三叉星标志就是寓意当时创办梅赛德斯奔驰公司时由三家私人公司合并组建而成;宝马公司的标志代表巴伐利亚飞机发动机制造公司,蓝白相间的图案代表飞机螺旋桨在旋转。字母车标就很容易理解了,一般是汽车公司创始人名字的首字母缩写,如劳斯莱斯,就是ROLLS 和ROYSE兄弟创立的,所以车标是RR;本田的H形车标是本田汽车公司创始人本田宗一郎(HONDA)的首字母;大众的VW标志就是VOLKS WAGEN的首字母缩写。简单地说,图案车标代表汽车公司创办的历史,字母车标就是汽车公司名称的缩写。

Vehicle Identification Number(VIN)(Fig.1-12) is a group of determined code a vehicle manufacturer designated to a vehicle in order to identify it. It is a car's fingerprint. It sets your car apart from millions of vehicles. The VIN is reflected by 17-digit characters. It displays a car's uniqueness and manufacturer. Vehicle identification number,which can be used to track recalls,registrations,warranty claim,insurance claims after they were stolen,provides a convenient conditions for sales,users,maintenance staff,traffic management to identify a vehicle's ID.

In the mid 1950's,American automobile manufacturers began stamping and casting identifying numbers on cars and their parts. The obvious purpose was to give an accurate description of the vehicle when mass production numbers were starting to climb in very significant numbers.
In the early 1980's,the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (U.S.Dept.of Transport) required that all road vehicles must contain a 17-character VIN. This established a fixed VIN system for major vehicle manufacturers. It meanwhile established a unique “DNA” style number for each unique vehicle which rolled off the assembly line.

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character number. VINs are used in New Zealand,Australia,Europe,the United States and other countries. They're the main way vehicles are identified for administrative purposes.
New vehicles must have a VIN attached before they're sold,and it's manufacturer's or importer's responsibility to supply the numbers.
Some imported second-hand vehicles have VINs attached. As long as the number conforms with the approved standard (and is unique) it will be accepted as the required identification. When an imported vehicle already has a VIN number,it's importer's responsibility to give the sufficient information to decode it.

As the number of theft growing,manufacturer's put more and more VIN number stickers to many parts of the vehicle. With the new vehicle tracking system,police can track a stolen vehicle within hours,giving the thief no time to remove all the VIN number stickers that are in many places and hidden somewhere in car.
