Anne was born in Germany on 12 June 1929. When she was very little, she loved reading. In 1942, Anne’s dad gave her a diary for her 13th birthday. Then she began to write in it.
Anne loved watching films, but she couldn’t get into the cinema because she was a Jew. In fact, the German Nazis wanted to get rid of all Jewish people in Europe. Her whole family had to hide from the Nazis. They hid in a small apartment for two years and couldn’t go outside. So Anne made her diary her best friend. She called it Kitty. She wanted to write
