Zhong Kaitong, a fourth-grader from Guangzhou, enjoyed a fun vacation this summer. Instead of attending English or math training courses, she played badminton and basketball most of the time.
A new guideline introduced by central government on July 24 helped Zhong enjoy some free time during the summer. In order to cut down on the schoolwork pressure on primary and junior high school students, the guideline calls for cutting down on homework, improving the quality of education and regulating after-class activities, Xinhua reported.
According to the guideline, children below the third grade will not have homework anymore. It should take no more than 90 minutes for junior high school students to finish their homework.
After-school training institutions (机构) are not allowed to offer overseas education courses or advanced teaching. No subject-based training will be allowed on weekends, national holidays or during winter and summer vacations.
More than 75 percent of children in Chinese cities from grades 1 to 12 are taking private tutoring (家教) courses, Global Times reported.
“Parents are worried that if their children start behind, they will stay behind. Some training institutions have made use of parents ’ worries to make money,” said Chen Xianzhe, a professor at South China Normal University. “The guideline is meant to calm the worries of parents and society as a whole.”
“But this does not mean the tutoring courses will completely disappear, since exams still exist ( 存 在 ), ”said Chu Zhaohui, a senior researcher at the National Institute of Education Sciences. One-on-one or one-on-two tutoring might see a rise because of this need.

Big snowstorms and cold air swept across northern China in the first week of November. Many people felt uncomfortable in the freezing cold.
At the same time, a global ( 全 球 的 ) meeting on climate change – COP 26 – was held in Glasgow, Scotland. There, leaders from around the world tried to deal with global warming.
Why are we experiencing such a cold winter on a warming planet
The cold winter and global warming, two seemingly opposite facts, are not contradictory, says Zhou Bing from the China Meteorological Administration’s National Climate Center.
Global warming does not happen evenly (均衡地) on Earth, and it causes more extreme (极端 的) heat and cold, Zhou said.
Because of the global warming, China has seen a growing average temperature in winter. It has increased by 0.41℃ every ten years since 1961.
But in some cases, the country has also seen freezing cold – for example, the icy weather in early 2008.
Global warming has changed Earth’s air cycle, affecting the local weather through sea-air or land-air working on with each other. For example, in October, La Nina affected China. It is caused by strong winds above the Pacific Ocean. It brought more cold air to China.
Another reason for the cold weather is the warming Arctic, according to BBC. It is warming almost three times as fast as any other place on Earth. As the temperature increases there, lots of cold Arctic air then goes southward.
Will this winter be much colder The official forecast (预报) said it could be a cold winter. Northern China will probably see more snow than average, and southern China less rainfall than
average.
