At the beginning of Grade Two, I joined the cross-country running team in our school.
When I came to the first practice, I was filled with optimism. But as the distance we ran in each practice gradually increased from three to four, to six miles, I realized with surprise that no matter how hard I tried, I wasn’t able to run as fast as others. In fact, I was one of the slowest on the team.
What was the point of putting myself through so much pain After the first few weeks, I wanted to quit.
Then we had our first cross-country meet
When we started the race, I felt the great pressure of expectations sink onto my shoulders. And after a while I stopped running and struggled to walk up the hill. But then I heard my coaches shouting my name from the top of the hill. I felt confused and embarrassed; why were they cheering for me I was running terribly! As I tried my best to finish the race, I realized that my coaches didn’t care how fast I ran. Neither did my teammates. During the rest of the season, they were always on the sidelines of every race, cheering for me just as loudly as they’d cheered for the front runner.
From then on, I began to put my effort into supporting my teammates instead of focusing on my own performance. In that way, I celebrated my teammates’ victories as if they were my own; I felt their pain and exhaustion as if they were my own.
Cross-country running made me realize I don’t need to be the best to be successful in life. It taught me to value my relationships with people more than my relationship with my ego. It taught me to cheer for others even if I don’t know their names.

B. He put more effort into his study
C. He received more support from his coaches
D. He started caring about his teammates
7. . What did the author realize from his experience
A. The importance of team spirit B. The value of competition
C. The secret of winning a race D. The benefits of doing sports

Today, the most frightening living shark is the great white, which is over six meters long and bites with a force of two tonnes. Its fossil relative, Megalodon (meaning "big tooth") that lived about 23 to 3.6 million years ago, was over twice the length of a great white shark and had a bite force of more than ten tonnes.
Jack Cooper and his team used a number of mathematical methods to find out the size and proportions(比例)of this monster, by making close comparisons with a variety of living relatives that have certain similarities to Megalodon. He said, “I have always been mad about sharks. Megalodon was actually the very animal that inspired me to pursue palaeontology(古生物学) in the first place when I was just six years old, so I was over the moon to get a chance to study it. This was my dream project.”
Previously the fossil shark, known formally as Otodus megalodon, was only compared with the great white. Jack and his colleagues, for the first time, expanded this analysis to include five modern sharks. “ Megalodon is not a direct ancestor of the great white and is equally related to several modern sharks such as the salmon shark, as well as the great white. We collected detailed measurements of all five to make predictions about Megalodon,”Dr. Pimiento said.
The researchers discovered that the babies of all these modern sharks start out as little adults, and they don’t change in proportion as they get larger. Jack Cooper said, “This means we could simply take the growth curves(生长曲线) of the five modem forms and forecast the overall shape as they get larger and larger--- right up to a body length of 16 meters.”
The results suggest that a 16-meter-long Megalodon likely had a head round 4.65 meters long, a fin about 1.62 meters tall on the back and a tail around 3.85 meters high. The reconstruction of the size of Megalodon’s body parts represents a fundamental step towards a better understanding of this huge extinct shark.
8. Why is the great white mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To remind people to stay away from it.
B. To uncover its close relation with Megalodon.
C. To introduce the researchers' new findings about it.
D. To show Megalodon's giant body and strength by comparison.
9. What does the underlined phrase"over the moon"in Paragraph 2 mean
A. A bit hesitant. B. Very excited.
C. Really stressed. D. Totally unprepared.
10. What was special about the new study led by Jack Cooper
A. It proved the real existence of Megalodon.
B. It was based on data from five types of modern sharks.
C. It was aimed at finding the direct ancestor of the great white.
D. It compared Megalodon with the great white for the first time.
11. What did the researchers find about Megalodon
A. Their babies had the same body length as modern baby sharks.
B. Their body proportions changed dramatically during growth.
C. Their fin on the back could be as tall as an adult human.
D. Their bite force was equal to the great white’s.
D
The way we cook is important. In many countries, the two sources of heat used for cooking are natural gas or electric stoves. The World Health Organization(WHO) warns that millions of people are dying every year from indoor air pollution. The WHO finds that poor cooking, heating and lighting technologies are killing millions of people each year.
Indoor air pollution results from the use of dangerous fuels and cook stoves in the home. WHO officials say nearly three billion people are unable to use clean fuels and technologies for cooking, heating and lighting. And they say more than seven million people die from exposure to indoor or outdoor air pollution each year. Of that number, the WHO says about 4.3 million people die from household air pollution given off by simple biomass(生物燃料)and coal stoves.
These findings show that the home use of poisonous fuels is to blame for many of these deaths. These fuels include wood, coal, animal waste and so on. Carlos Dora is Coordinator in the WHO’ s Department of Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health. He says people should not use unprocessed coal and kerosene(煤油)fuel indoors. He says opening a window or door to let out the harmful air will not correct the situation. It will only pollute the outdoors. “New technologies and clean fuels can rid people of this problem.”
The United Nations found that more than 95 percent of families in sub-Saharan Africa depend on solid fuels for cooking. It says huge populations in India, China and Latin American countries, such as Guatemala and Peru, are also at risk.
Nigel Bruce is a professor of Public Health at the University of Liverpool. He says researchers are developing good stoves and other equipment to burn fuels in a more efficient way.“There are already many technologies for clean fuels available now. An effective and reasonably low-cost ethanol(酒精)stove that is made by Dometic (a Sweden-based company)is now being tested out. Another interesting development is electric induction stoves.” In India, you can buy an induction stove for about $8. And in Africa you can buy a solar lamp for less than $1.
12. How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed
A. By making classifications. B. By listing numbers.
C. By following time order. D. By describing a process.
13. According to Carlos Dora, what is the best solution to indoor air pollution
A. People should use an effective air cleaner.
B. People should use new technologies and clean fuels.
C. People should open a window or door to let out the harmful air.
D. People should prevent themselves from being exposed to harmful air..
14. What can we learn from the passage
A. Most of the deaths from indoor pollution are in developing countries.
B. Burning solid fuels can help limit indoor air pollution .
C. People can buy ethanol stoves made by Dometic in India.
D. There are already two technologies for clean fuels available for use.
15. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. The way we cook is changing.
B. Cause of indoor air pollution.
C The development of electric stoves.
D. Indoor air pollution kills millions each year.

C
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. B 11. C

C. The development of electric stoves.
D. Indoor air pollution kills millions each year.
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. A 15. D

Sleep to Lose Weight
A recent study found that people who sleep less tend to be fat. Experts said it’s time to find out if more sleep can fight obesity.
Nowadays, the most popular method to keep fit is doing more exercise and eating less. Some people even take weight-loss drugs to keep slim, which is unhealthy and harmful to your body. “___16___As a result, we’ve failed to recognize the value of good sleep,” said a physician.
Men sleep an average of 27 minutes less than women, and overweight and fat patients sleep less than patients with normal weights. 【
故将which改为where或在which前添in。

故将are改为is。
