Eva, the Belgian Malinois, is home now, getting a well-deserved rest surrounded by new toys after
nearly dying while protecting her human from a mountain lion.
The attack happened on May 16 in northern California when 24-year-oldErin Wilson headed down a path toward the Trinity River before she found herself cornered by a mountain lion. “I was just walking down the slope with the dog running ahead of me. I turned around and there was this cat just growling
at me and it attacked me,” Wilson told NPR. “I screamed for Eva and she came running.”
Mountain lion attacks on humans are incredibly rare. Since 1890, California has recorded only six fatal mountain lion attacks because of the animal’s generally shy, reclusive (独处的) nature. Their preferred prey is deer, which are normally in abundance in their forested habitat, but recent drought conditions have made food scarce in some areas. Wilson thought that these conditions made the sudden
appearance of a slim woman look like an attractive option.
To protect her human, Eva leapt between Wilson and the lion, tackling the wildcat and embarked on a life-and-death struggle between the two animals. After a short fight, the mountain lion got its jaws around Eva’s head and Wilson fought to free her dog, hitting the lion with rocks in an attempt to break its grip. Eventually, Wilson ran back to her truck and flagged down passing motorist Sharon Houston. Fetching an iron bar from her truck, Wilson and Houston ran back down the trail and their combined
efforts managed to frighten the big cat off.
Wounded herself and shaken by the experience, Wilson still managed to carry Eva back to the Animal Hospital. The 2-year-old dog didn’t need surgery, but her wounds were still extensive. Eva left the animal hospital on May 19 with surgical tape wrapped around both her front paws, and the
veterinarian said she might lose sight in her left eye.

You are what you eat—and what you eat may be encoded in your DNA. Studies have indicated that your genes play a role in determining the foods you find delicious or disgusting. But exactly how big a role they play has been difficult to figure out. “Everything has a genetic component, even if it’s small,” says Joanne Cole,a geneticist at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. “We know that there is some genetic contribution to why we eat the foods we eat. Can we take the nextstep and actually locate the regions in the genome (基因组) ”
New research led by Cole has gotten a step closer. Through a large-scale genomics analysis, her team has identified 481 genome regions that were directly linked to dietary patterns and food preferences. The findings, which have not yet been peer-reviewed, were presented last month at the American Society for Nutrition’s annual conference.
The team based the new study on a 2020 Nature Communications study by Cole and her colleagues that used data from the U.K. Biobank, a public database of the genetic and health information of 500,000 participants. By scanning genomes, the new analysis was able to identify 194 regions associated with dietary patterns and 287 linked to specific foods such as fruit, cheese, fish, tea and alcohol. Further understanding how genetics impact how we eat could reveal differences in nutritional needs or disease risks.
“One of the problems with a lot of these genomics studies is that they’re very small. They don’t have enough people to really be able to identify genes in ways that are credible. This study had a huge group of people, so it’s really powerful,” says Monica Dus, a geneticist at the University of Michigan. “The other thing that I thought was really great is that there are so many different traits that they’re measuring related to diet including cholesterol ( 胆 固 醇 ), the body and socioeconomic backgrounds.” As the research advances, Dus says, such genome analysis could potentially assist health care providers and even policymakers to address larger issues that affect food access and health.
It’s definitely true that it may contribute to making sure there aren’t food deserts—areas which have limited access to fresh, healthy and affordable food—or to making sure that there’s a higher minimum wage so that everyone can afford to eat, although the journey ahead remains lengthy and challenging.

The future is electric. That means it will need a lot of batteries, motors and wires. That, in turn, means a lot of minerals with which to build them. Great times, then, for prospectors (探矿者), and particularly for any who think they can increase the efficiency of their profession. Several firms are applying artificial intelligence to the process, both to improve the possibility of mining and to detect underground ore (矿石) bodies that are invisible to current techniques.
KoBold Metals in California, Earth AI in San Francisco and Verai in Boston are small fish at the moment. But at least one bigger fish—Rio Tinto, an Australian-British firm—is also keen. They are gathering lots of geological (地质的), geochemical and geophysical data to feed software models. These, they hope, will spot patterns and draw inferences about where to sink new mines. Some of the data are new. But alot were kept in the archives (档案室) of national geological surveys and journals of geology or sat in the form of rock cores in various sheds around the world.
KoBold has transformed archive data from around the world, many of which are on paper and some of which go back to the 19th century, into machine-usable form. That has permitted it to build maps of areas of interest all over Earth’s surface. Some of those maps are used to train the company’s AI models. Others are used to test those AI models ’ effectiveness by checking how good they are at predicting known ore deposits (矿藏) on maps that they have not previously seen. If they pass, they can be let loose on (放手做) under-explored places of interest and suggest the most effective places to drill. Thanks to that, last year KoBold announced its discovery of a rich copper deposit, in Zambia.
In spite of the success, Kurt House, KoBold’s boss, observes that many of the exploration projects fail to turn into actual mines. AI therefore has plenty of room to improve. However, by greatly expanding the volume of rock which can be searched, it will enable new mining in our own countries,
lessening the need to rely on other countries for future supplies.

W: No, I bought one last month. I think this dictionary is enough for my study.
M: Then, a new coat You know, winter is coming. You will need a new coat for this winter.

M: A mobile phone Do you really need one
W: Yes, very much. Many of my classmates have already got one. I can get in touch with them easily if I have one.

M: It’s very nice of you to say so.
W: I mean it. I taught many students before, but none of them listened to my advice like you did.
M: Of course. Your support helped me a lot.
W: I guess the judges appreciated your work too, so they gave you the award.
M: Yeah, I am really happy about the result.
W: Well, you should continue writing poems, not because of the award, but because it brings out the best in you.
M: I will. I write them from the heart. I really enjoy it.

W: Certainly. Good choice by the way — that is my favorite filling too.

W: Yes, sir. I just started one week ago. My name is Beth. Can I take your name please for your order
M: Sure, Beth. I am Sam. Very nice to meet you.
W: Me too. I will call you out when your order is ready.
M: OK, Beth.

W: I didn’t know that you could speak French! That’s so cool, David.
M: I grew up speaking it, Nancy. You know my home country is Congo, in Africa. Many people in this nation speak French. Of course, some people in Congo also speak Arabic and Portuguese, but I’m a French speaker.
W: Wow, I didn’t know that. You speak English with an American accent, so I thought you were born here.
M: Oh, well, I moved here when I was in high school. My entire family moved abroad to live with relatives in New York. I’ve been here ever since, but I want to revisit my home country.
W: That’s so interesting. I moved to New York three years ago, but I’ve lived in the US for my whole life. My grandparents came to this country from Italy. So, above all other places, I’ve always dreamt of visiting Italian cities and sites.
M: That would be an incredible trip. Anyway, I’d better get back to work. But I’d love to speak more about travel and culture with you.
W: Yes, I’d love that too!

Alright, everyone. We should get to bed before 10:00 p.m. — we have a big day ahead of us. But before going to sleep, I want to thank you for packing your bags. Your mother and I are grateful that you both are so responsible. Likewise, all our bags are ready, and our taxi has been arranged to pick us up from our house tomorrow at 5:00 a.m. Our flight leaves at 9:00 a.m., so we’ll need to leave the house four hours before the plane takes off. It’s not an international flight, so we won’t need our passports. But now, I still need to gather everyone’s national ID card for tomorrow.
By tomorrow afternoon, Uncle Jerry will pick us up on Hainan Island. Jerry won’t have time to give us a full tour, but we’ll have a car to explore the beaches and mountains. Jerry has a family with two children around your ages as well. So, Angela and Kevin, you’ll be able to spend some time with them. We’re all excited about the warm weather and the beaches. I’ll join you for a couple of days, but I must play golf with Jerry as well. Besides spending time with family, I’m most eager to play some golf while we’re there.
