When I was about 12 years old, my older brother, James, smuggled (偷运) a BB gun into the house. Our parents had told us many times that we were not allowed to bring home guns or knives, even if they were just toys. Having any form of weaponry (兵器) in our home was strictly forbidden.
James brought me to his room. He opened his closet door and look out a shoebox that was buried beneath a heap of clothes. The BB gun was inside. I was immediately attracted by the shiny barrel (枪管).
“Can I shoot it, James ” I asked, hopefully.
“No way,” James said, taking it from me and putting it back.
One day, when no one was home, I went into Jame’s closet and took it out. For some incomprehensible reason ---- I have no idea what I was thinking I went to the front window of the second floor in our row house. I cracked the window open. I pointed the gun outside and shot. I quickly shut the window and looked outside secretly.
In a matter of seconds, old Mr. Schlosberg came out of his grocery store. He looked back at his store window. He looked up the street. He looked down the street. Then he looked straight across to our house.
Thankfully, James made it home before Mother or Father.
As he stepped through the door, I could hear old Mr. Schlosberg call his name. “James, James,” he called. “Come here, son.”
After several minutes, James ran back across the street and into the living room. I had retreated into the kitchen. “Alma!” he screamed. “Get out here! You cracked Mr. Schlosberg’s window with my BB gun!”
“Oh, please, James,” I begged. “Don’t let him tell Mother. She will hit my bottom real good!” James sighed. He wiped my tears and went back across the street to Mr. Schlosberg’s. I don’t know what James said to that man, but there was never a mention of the incident again.
Years later, I found out James had used the money he got from his newspaper route to pay for Mr. Schlosberg’s cracked window. He only got one cent for every paper he delivered. He managed to pay back the debt just before he went off to fight in World War II.
Since that day, I have never touched a gun: a BB gun, a water gun, a real gun, or any other type.

The “diet” in diet drinks may be a false promise for some soda lovers. A study published
recently in JAMA Network Open adds to the evidence that drinks made with sucralose (蔗糖素) may stimulate the appetite, at least among some people.
“We found that females and people with obesity (肥胖) had greater brain reward activity after consuming the artificial sweetener,” says study author Katie Page. “What was most surprising was the impact of body weight and biological sex. They were very important factors in the way that the brain responded to the artificial sweetener.”
Both groups also had a reduction in the hormone that inhibits (抑制) appetite, and they ate more food after they consumed drinks with sucralose, compared with after regular sugar-sweetened drinks. In contrast, the study found males and people of healthy weight did not have an increase in either brain reward activity or hunger response, suggesting they’re not affected in the same way.
Page and her team measured the response to diet soda in three ways. They used brain images of the 74 study participants to document the activation of parts of the brain linked to appetite. They used blood samples to measure blood sugar and hormones that can drive hunger. And they also tracked how much participants ate at a buffet table at the end of each study session.
“These results are consistent with patterns that we’ve actually seen in my lab in animal studies,” says Susan Swithers, a behavioral scientist at Purdue University.
“You are supposed to get sugar after something tastes sweet. Your body has been accustomed to that,” explains Swithers. But diet soda may lead to a disconnect. The sugar never arrives, and “that could decrease the body’s efficiency in metabolizing (新陈代谢) sugar the next time.”
What did Page find might affect the brain’s response to diet soda
A. The artificial sweetener. B. The drinker’s sex and weight.
C. The reduction in hormones. D. The amount of sweet drinks.
29. What can we learn from paragraph four
A. The methods of the study. B. The impacts of diet soda.
C. The causes of overeating. D. The responses of participants.
30. What is Swithers’ attitude toward Page’s study
A. Unclear. B. Approving. C. Doubtful. D. Unsatisfied.
31. Where can you find this text
A. A story collection. B. A travel journal.
C. A consumer guide. D. A health magazine.
D
Is future you ... you It might seem like a strange philosophical question. But the answer to how you think about your future self could make the difference between decisions you ultimately find satisfying and ones you might eventually regret.
The brain patterns that emerge on an MRI (核磁共振成像) when people think about their future selves most like the brain patterns that arise when they think about strangers. This finding suggests that, in the mind’s eye, our future selves look like other people. If you see future you as a different person, why should you save money, eat healthier or exercise more regularly to benefit that stranger
However, if you see the interests of your distant self as more like those of your present self, you are considerably more likely to do things today that benefit you tomorrow. A paper in the journal PLOS ONE revealed that college students who experienced a greater sense of connection and similarity to their future selves were more likely to achieve academic success.
Relationships with our future selves also matter for general psychological well-being. In a project led by Joseph Reiff, which includes 5,000 adults aged 20 to 75, he found that those who perceived a great overlap (重叠) in qualities between their current and future selves ended up being more satisfied with their lives 10 years after filling out the initial survey.
So how can we better befriend our future selves and feel more connected to their fates The psychological mindset with what we call “vividness interventions” works. We have found, for instance, that showing people images of their older, grayer selves increases intentions to save for the long term. Besides, you might try writing a letter to-and then from-your future self. As demonstrated by Yuta Chishima and Anne Wilson in their 2020 study in the journal Self and Identity, when high-school students engaged in this type of “send-and-reply” exercise, they experienced elevated (升高的) levels of feelings of similarity with their future selves.
Letter-writing and visualization exercises are just a couple of ways we can connect with our future selves and beyond, but the larger lesson here is clear: If we can treat our distant selves as if they are people we love, care about and want to support, we can start making choices for them that improve our lives--both today and tomorrow.
What’s the function of paragraph 2
A. Generating further discussion. B. Introducing a research result.
C. Showing the effect of the finding. D. Concluding various viewpoints.
33. How does the author prove his statements
A. By offering relevant statistics. B. By using quotations.
C. By referring to previous findings. D. By making comparisons.
34. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. Benefits of befriending our future selves.
B. Ways of connecting with our future selves.
C. Methods of changing psychological mindsets.
D. Possibilities of us becoming our future selves.
35. What does the article want to tell us
A. Making future plans makes a difference.
B. Our future selves look like other people.
C. Getting to know your future self benefits.
D. Your choice affects the fates of strangers.

Why are some countries 30 minutes off the Global Time Zone Grid It is an interesting question. To understand the answer, we have to understand where time zones came from in the first place.
Until the mid-19th century, major cities would set their local time by when the sun was at its highest point in that particular city. _____36_____. For example, when it was 12 p.m. in New York City, it was 12:23 p. m. in Boston. With the development of rapid transport, local mean time made things increasingly more difficult because trains arriving from a certain city would be arriving at each stop’s local time. _____37_____
So began the creation of an international standard of time. At last 27 countries reached an agreement that the world would be divided into 24 time zones based on the 24 hours in each day. Each of the time zones would be defined by a meridian (子午线) _____38_____ It later became known as Coordinated Universal Time.
So why are some cities 30 or 45 minutes off _____39_____For example, in New Delhi, India, they found themselves halfway between two meridians, and therefore decided to be 30 minutes between each, as opposed to adopting one time or the other.
_____40_____ But when it comes to figuring out what time it actually is, a little humor never hurts. Posted in the comments on the BBC article by David Marshall of London, England: “I live in my wife’s time zone, which is 10 minutes later than everyone else’s.”
Time zones can be confusing.
It was called local mean time.
No doubt people were confused.
D. In this way time zones came into being.
E. That is because those cities are nearly the same.
F. All of the times were set according to Greenwich Mean Time.
G. That has largely to do with the politics in each of those places.

“Number 7, Jobie Nymble, takes the lead,” cried the announcer. “Just one more hurdle (跨栏) and ----” Cheers erupted. “Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girls’ 100-mcter hurdles!” The crowd went wild as Jobie’s teammates screamed and yelled.
Determined to go all the way to County Championships, Jobie patted her worn neon-green track spikes (钉鞋). They were bursting at the seams (接缝处), but she didn’t care. They were her lucky shoes and she loved them. “Next Saturday, we’re taking home the gold,” Jobie whispered to her spikes, excitedly retying them. “Don’t forget, guys,” said one of her teammates cheerfully. “My birthday party is next Friday at Hidden Park.” “Beep. Party recorded in calendar,” joked Jobie in her best robot voice.
Jobie brimmed with excitement all week long. At track practice, she leaped over those hurdles faster than she’d ever leaped before. The day of Marisol’s party, Jobie put on her favorite outfit: her fancy blue shorts, an old track T-shirt from her dad, and her lucky spikes. The party was in full swing when Jobie arrived at Hidden Park. Music and the smell of grilled food filled the air. Two of Jobie’s teammates rushed toward her, breathless and barefoot, asking her to try the slide. Jobie’s eyes darted toward the party area. Suddenly, she saw it. The BIGGEST inflatable (充气的) slide she had ever seen was on the far side of the park. Smiling kids zoomed down the slide at unspeakable speeds. Without thinking twice, Jobie took off her spikes and rushed toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the sky like Jack's magical beanstalk, but she reached the top in no time. She sat down, slipped to the edge, and closed her eyes as she let go. Jobie couldn’t get enough, conquering the slide over and over again. When it was finally time to go home, she reluctantly made her way back to the track where she’d left her shoes.
