A
When school started on that warm August day, I threw myself into everything I did, including playing volleyball. I wanted to become beautiful, or at the very least, skinny. I stopped eating completely. Soon I began losing weight, which thrilled me, and I even grew to love the tiredness and light headaches that came with my poor diet, for those feelings meant that I was winning.
As the season progressed, things had become tense between my head volleyball coach, Coach Smith, and me. She felt that something was wrong with my health. She talked with me about my eating and was angry that I wouldn’t listen to her when she tried to make me eat. She tried to persuade me in a determined way and so we fought constantly. Then my hunger started to affect my performance. I was so tired that practice and games were becoming a struggle. One afternoon, with hurt in her eyes, Coach Smith asked me what I had eaten and I told her nothing yet, but I was going to. She looked at me, disappointment in her eyes, knowing she couldn’t make me stop, and walked away.
A couple of weeks later I attended a formal dinner for our volleyball team. I stood there as my coach managed to say something nice about me. I realized then that I had ruined my senior year by being disrespectful, and I had probably ruined hers as well. So that evening I wrote her a letter apologizing and thanking her.
Then one Saturday, as I was reading in the library, I felt someone gently take my arm and say softly, “Lynn Jones, how are you doing ” I looked up and saw the familiar face. “Thanks for the letter,” she said. “It meant a lot.”
When I think of a coach, I think of someone above me, someone who gives instruction—not a friend. But Coach Smith is different, and, like any other good friend, she dealt with my problem in a determined way even when I hated her for it at that time. I didn’t deserve her kindness, but she gave it anyway. I will forever be grateful for her help, and now for her friendship.
The author fought with Coach Smith because ________.
A. she refused to go on a diet B. she caused failure of her team
C. she changed the training course D. she kept her idea of losing weight
22. Why did the author write a letter to Coach Smith
A. She felt sorry for eating too little food.
B. She desired to improve her performance.
C. She was grateful for Smith’s care for her health.
D. She wanted to build a close relationship with Smith.
23. Which of the following can best describe Smith
A. Ambitious and patient. B. Caring and devoted.
C. Enthusiastic and generous. D. Courageous and calm.
24. What is the best title for the passage
A. Unexpected Friendship B. A Fight with My Coach
C. A Strict Volleyball Coach D. My Way of Losing Weight

Many people have participated in lots of virtual meetings these years. Some research shows this adjustment might not impact workplace productivity to any great degree. A new study, though, suggests otherwise.
In the study, 602 participants were randomly(随机) paired and asked to come up with creative uses for a product. They were also randomly selected to work together either in person or virtually. The pairs were then ranked by assessing their total number of ideas, as well as those concepts’ degree of novelty, and asked to submit their best idea. Among the groups, virtual pairs came up with significantly fewer ideas, suggesting that something about face-to-face interaction generates more creative ideas. The findings could stiffen employers’ resolve to urge or require their employees to come back to the office.
“We ran this experiment based on feedback from companies that it was harder to innovate with remote workers,” said lead researcher Melanie Brucks. “Unlike other forms of virtual communication, like phone calls or e-mail, videoconferencing copies the in-person experience quite well, so I was surprised when we found meaningful differences between in-person and video interaction for idea generation.”
When random objects were placed in both the virtual and physical rooms, the virtual pairs of participants spent more time looking directly at each other rather than letting their look wander about the room and taking in the entire scene. Eyeing one’s whole environment and noticing the random objects were associated with increased idea generation. On platforms, the screen occupies our interactions. Our attention wanders less. “Looking away might come across as rude,” said Brucks, “so we have to look at the screen because that is the defined context of the interaction, the same way we wouldn’t walk to another room while talking to someone in person.”
Like most educators, Brucks has primarily taught virtually in the past three years, and she did notice some benefits of the approach as well. Her students were more likely to take turns speaking and her shyer students spoke up more often, rid of the anxiety that comes from addressing a large classroom. Brucks found that one solution to improving virtual idea generation might be to simply turn off the camera, for her students felt “freer” and more creative when asked to do so. And this may be sound advice for the workplace.
What does the underlined word “stiffen” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean
A. Challenge. B. Revise. C. Strengthen. D. Shake.
26. At first, lead researcher Melanie Brucks might think that ________.
A. Creative ideas may emerge from casual(不经意的) thoughts.
B. The feedback from companies seems questionable.
C. Participants should make eye contact in an online meeting.
D. Videoconferencing can’t compare with in-person communication.
27. What can we learn about Brucks’ students
A. They progressed in focusing attention.
B. They relieved anxiety by speaking up.
C. They displayed talent for public speaking.
D. They took advantage of virtual learning.
28. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. Brainstorming Online Limits Creativity
B. Interacting In Person Boosts Efficiency
C. Grouping Randomly Increases Productivity
D. Maintaining Teamwork Improves Innovation
C
Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) is the practice of providing a short period of class time for students to read silently whatever they choose according to their interests. SSR programs can be offered at actually any grade level. However, it takes a great deal of time, effort, and know how to put a successful SSR program into operation. I first recognized this when I was a high school teacher twenty years ago. Though some of my students were happy to be allowed to select and read books in class, many never truly dived into their reading. I knew that there must be ways to improve the implementation(实施)of my SSR program, but I wasn’t sure what they were.
Years later, when I returned to the University of Southern California, I began analyzing a large sample of SSR studies to determine what made them effective and found that successful programs shared five key factors: easy access to reading materials, sufficiently interesting materials, teachers’ encouragement, follow-up activities and reading at least twice a week.
In fact, only when teachers follow specific guidelines do these programs achieve their full potential. Having learned this, I decided to create an “ideal” SSR program for my students by employing the five factors above. At the same time, another high school in our district also made the decision to offer students SSR time each day. However, having no knowledge of the five factors, the teachers simply asked their students to “read anything for fifteen minutes.”
The result was that the students at my school outperformed (胜过)the other school in four areas: reading comprehension, positive attitudes toward reading, frequency of after-school pleasure reading, and use of a wider range of reading sources. I shared my findings with the other school’s staff members. Since then, both schools have experienced the positive benefits of SSR.
Today, I have given many lectures at a wide variety of schools where teachers are eager to learn “how-to” methods for developing programs that will motivate their students to become hooked on reading. They ask a variety of excellent questions and I have never been bored of answering them.
What do we know about the SSR program from Paragraph 1
It’s an after-class reading program.
It suits students of all grade levels.
It requires teachers to select books according to their interest.
It’s easy to conduct the SSR program successfully in practice.
30. Years later the author’s studies of SSR showed that ________.
A. fifteen minutes’ reading a week was enough.
B. successful SSR programs relied on five key factors.
C. easy reading materials made SSR programs effective.
D. students’ potential could be achieved through reading.
31. The author’s “ideal” SSR program helps his students perform better in ________.
A. positive life attitudes B. great interest in studying
C. understanding abilities in reading D. owning wider studying sources
32. The author writes the passage to ________.
A. introduce his specific progress in studying SSR
B. tell readers about his SSR teaching experience
C. talk about his confusion about teaching reading
D. share the “how-to” of Sustained Silent Reading

Ryan lost his parents in an accident when he was only two. Since then, his grandma, Elsa, raised him alone, and tried to provide him with everything he needed.
When Ryan was 15, his grandma retired from her company. She had prepared much of her savings for Ryan’s college education, so she just took on a part-time job to cover the daily bills. However, Ryan disliked his grandma’s part-time job. She worked as a cleaning lady at a nearby park and he was afraid one of his classmates would see his grandma and think lowly of them.
One day, Ryan was chosen to act the lead role in a school play. All others acting in the play invited their families to the big opening night, but Ryan was too ashamed to invite his grandma. Unfortunately for him, EIsa saw the flyer (宣传单) of the play while she was cleaning Ryan’s room. That night, when having the dinner in the living room, she talked to Ryan about the flyer, saying she would love to attend.
“You won’t be attending, grandma,” he shouted. Hearing that, Elsa wanted to know why. Finally, Ryan broke, “It’s because I don’t want my friends to find out you’re a cleaning lady!” Elsa was shocked. She was hurt, and couldn’t find the words to respond to her grandson. Instead, she silently went to her room and cried all night long.
Little did Ryan know — his grandma kept working because of him. If she had the choice, she would rather stay at home and enjoy her retirement, but she knew she had to make money so that Ryan could continue living comfortably. And although Elsa was sad about Ryan’s behavior, she continued working.
Elsa’s legs and back had been experiencing bad pains for long because of her work. And she just secretly took painkillers (止痛药) without telling Ryan about her illness. However, the terrible thing happened. One Sunday morning at home, she found herself unable to stand up.

Soon, Ryan found it and rushed her to the hospital. Worried and anxious, Ryan waited restlessly outside the emergency room. After what seemed an endless wait, the door opened. Out came the doctor and EIsa in a wheelchair, Ryan was informed Elsa’s illness was just a result of overwork. Luckily, it wasn’t deadly. Ryan let out a sigh of relief. At that moment, memories came flooding back. He recalled everything Grandma had done for him. Realizing Elsa was hiding her pain, he felt regretful about his previous hurtful words.
Ryan decided to say sorry to grandma. Turning to her, he knelt down, grasping her hand, and apologized sincerely to her, “Sorry, grandma. I shouldn’t have shouted like that.” Elsa just smiled and comforted him. Days after Elsa felt better, Ryan surprised her by taking her to his school. She was seated in the front row of the school hall. “My performance is for my selfless, hardworking and loving grandma!” Ryan said before they started the play. A wave of applause echoed in the hall, and Elsa was proudly in tears.

M: Did Henry plant all the trees himself
W: He planned to, but he hurt his hand when he rode a bike. So I did instead of him.

M: Good morning, Native Tongue Translations. Can I help you
W: Yes. I was wondering how much it would cost to translate a document from English into Arabic.
M: Well, it depends on the kind of document, how long it is, and when you need it returned.
W: It’s a cookbook about 20000 words long. It is not urgent, so you can take your time.
M: Well, Madam, Arabic is one of the most difficult languages in the world, and there aren’t very many translators compared to, say, Spanish. In other words, the charge for Arabic translation will be higher than for most other languages.
W: I understand. Could you give me an estimate
M: For this project, we would charge between five and ten cents per word.
W: OK. Thanks for your time. I think I’ll keep looking.

W: Have you been to the National Museum since it reopened
M: No, have you
W: Yes, I went yesterday with some friends who were visiting from out of town. It was wonderful! We were only able to see a few of the exhibits because we spent so much time looking at the jade exhibit. It was amazing. The jade was simply amazing. The collection includes pieces from around the time of Peking Man through the Qing Dynasty. Although the artistry of the later pieces is superb, I think I enjoyed the early ones best. The stones were so beautiful, the carved patterns were simple yet elegant, and they were all done with such primitive tools — truly astonishing!
M: That sounds like it’s worth a visit. My wife would probably enjoy it, too. How much is the entrance fee
W: That’s the best part. Like most museums in Beijing, admission is free!

M: Well, I feel more comfortable knowing that you’re safe.
W: Do you know how embarrassing it is to have your father drop you off at the mall All my friends have cars of their own already!
M: Don’t all of your friends have jobs of their own, too
W: Well, yeah, I guess, but...
M: And haven’t your friends kept their grades up all through high school
W: Uh... yeah.
M: Well, you show me a report card of straight A’s and two paychecks from a new job, and then we’ll talk about a car for you.
W: What That’s so unfair!
M: Life isn’t fair sometimes. But you’ll appreciate your future car if you earn it. Why don’t we look through some car magazines so you can see what you are working toward

M: Ms. Robertson, for the past three weeks, I have been getting complaints about your work.
W: Uh, what do you mean What kind of complaints
M: Well, your supervisor told me you’re turning your reports in 2 to 3 days late, you’re often absent from staff meetings, and you haven’t been getting along with your colleagues.
W: Look, Mr. Travers, I can explain...
M: Ms. Robertson, I know you have been with us for a while now, but this business is changing fast. We need people who can keep up and work as a team.
W: Mr. Travers, my mother was just diagnosed with stomach cancer. I’ve been spending all my time outside of work at the hospital with her, and I even had to leave work early because she went into emergency surgery and I had to sign some papers. I’ve been so exhausted, and then Morrison from accounting made a joke the other day about cancer victims losing their hair and...
M: Oh... I had no idea, Ms. Robertson.
W: I know my work has suffered these past few weeks, but I promise I will make up for it!
M: Listen, why don’t you take a couple of days off It’s much more important that you be with your mother while she is recovering.
W: Really, sir Thank you so much!
M: My pleasure. And I’ll have a word with Morrison. That kind of talk has no place in this office!

Good afternoon, shoppers! This is a special request from the security department here at Wal-Mart. We hope you are finding everything you are looking for, but right now, we need your help. We are looking for a 10-year-old boy named Brandon McSorley. Brandon, if you can hear this, please go to the security desk located at the front of the store near the Pizza Hut. Your mom is looking for you. All other guests, please take a moment to help us find Brandon. His mother Sally was last with him in the frozen foods section about 10 minutes ago, and she thinks he is still somewhere in the store, possibly in the toys section or the sporting goods section. Brandon is wearing a red shirt, blue jeans, white shoes, and a black baseball cap. He is about 5 feet 2 inches tall with dark hair and blue eyes. If you see Brandon, please help him to get to the security desk located at the front of the store. You can also approach any of our staff members if you see Brandon or have any other information about where he might be. Thank you very much for your help, and enjoy the rest of your day here at Wal-Mart.
