What do you know about the Olympic Games

Part I Lead-in
The modern Olympic Games began in Greece in 1896. In 1894, 79 men led by Baron, created the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Paris. A week later, “Citius-Altius-Fortius”, meaning “Faster-Higher-Stronger”, is chosen as the official motto of the International Olympic Committee. Coubertin thought that the most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the success but the struggle. The necessary thing is not to have won but to have fought well.
The modern Olympics
The first Summer Olympic Games was hosted in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens in 1896. 14 nations and 241 athletes competed in 43 events in nine different places.
The Winter Olympics were created to play snow and ice sports that were impossible to hold during the Summer Games. Figure skating and ice hockey were played as Olympic events at the Summer Olympics. A winter sports week was held in 1924 in Chamonix, France. This event became the first Winter Olympic Games.
The Ancient Olympics
The first Olympic Games were held at Olympia, ancient Greece as early as 776 B.C. The Olympic Games were held once every four years to honor the Greek god Zeus.
Sportsmen from many nations took part in the games. The Greek Olympics did not have as many sports programmes as the modern Olympic Games. There were only a short race — a race of about three miles and some other matches such as jumping, boxing, etc.
During the games all wars stopped. Soldiers were allowed to pass safely through enemy lines on their way to the games. The last Greek Olympics were held in 388 A.D. Then the Rome rulers ordered the games to be stopped.
A Frenchman wished to renew the ideas of excellence of body, mind and spirit shown in the ancient Greek Olympics. He believed that the Olympic Games would bring about healthy competition among nations, so he decided to start the Olympic Games all over again. He succeeded.
