Distance learning has become the new form of education since schools closed, and teachers have adapted – with the help of some truly amazing online applications.
Google Classroom
This popular application allows teachers to create online forums(论坛) to share courses, news, or lessons as well as a platform to assign, collect, and give feedback on student work. I’ve used Google Classroom for years, and it has become the cornerstone of my classroom throughout distance learning.
Google Forms

Flipgrid is a free online application that allows students and teachers to record short online videos. Teachers can easily create accounts and then within accounts create “classrooms.” From there, teachers can create posts for students to respond to via(通过) short videos.
Google Meet
Google Meet is an online meeting platform where teachers can share their screens with all participants to see as well as record the meeting. I’ve recorded all of my daily lessons and then posted the recordings to Google Classroom at the request of my students. This is a practice I’d like to continue even after distance learning as students really like the option to return to a recording of the day’s lesson to review it at their own pace.

It is common to see most live streamers sitting in front of a desk in a well-decorated room. But Zeng Qinghuan, a 30-year old from Xinhua County in Loudi, Hunan, has turned her whole village into a live streaming set. Her goal is to use e-commerce to help her people live a better life.
Known as “Xiangmei Xinbao” on Douyin, Zeng now has more than 3 million followers. One of her videos about traditional ways of planting and harvesting rice has attracted more than 300,000 followers.

To battle the plagiarism (抄袭), some schools in America have responded to ChatGPT by taking action, according to the New York Times.
New York City public schools, for example, recently prevented ChatGPT access on school computers and networks, saying “concerns about negative influence on students learning, and concerns about the safety of content.” Schools in other cities, including Seattle, have also limited its use.
A US’ online course provider Study. com recently asked 1, 000 students over the age of 18 about the use of ChatGPT in the classroom. The responses were surprising. Around 89 percent said they’ve used it on homework. Over 50 percent said they used ChatGPT to write an essay, while 22 percent admitted to having asked ChatGPT for a paper outline.

For example, ChatGPT helps writers gather writing materials for their papers, which not only increases the efficiency of the work, but also allows researchers to devote more energy to more creative work.
“Whether to use ChatGPT depends on whether to use it correctly. For those students who just use it to deal with homework or exams,” Zhu said, “this is putting the cart before the horse, which should be limited.” To avoid this problem, Zhu suggested introducing soft wares to help educators. It is common to see most live streamers sitting in front of a desk in a well-decorated room. But Zeng Qinghuan, a 30-year old from Xinhua County in Loudi, Hunan, has turned her whole village into a live streaming set. Her goal is to use e-commerce to help her people live a better life.
Known as “Xiangmei Xinbao” on Douyin, Zeng now has more than 3 million followers. One of her videos about traditional ways of planting and harvesting rice has attracted more than 300,000 followers.
Zeng used to study fashion design and has worked in some big cities before. In 2019 she returned to her village to care for her sick grandmother. She then found that she could build a career there—by being a live streamer with the help of her cousin.
At the beginning, she didn’t make any money. Zeng’s parents didn’t give her any support until she could stand on her own feet and help people sell their products. She has now sold local agricultural products worth tens of millions of yuan, like fermented tofu, preserved pork and dried sweet potatoes.
“I’m a daughter of the great mountains. I can also be a contributor to rural development in these new times,” she said.
Rural revitalization (振兴) is a key part of China’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25). Zeng hopes her experience can encourage more young people to return to their rural hometowns and start their own businesses. In 2021, after she became a deputy (代表) of the Loud Municipal People’s Congress, she put forward a proposal to ensure that “each village has one, product and one live streaming host of its own”. She plans to help cultivate 100 social media influencers from her county within three years, and two villages have taken part in the project, “I believe that the rural areas will become a big stage, and being a farmer will be seen as a respectable job too.” said Zeng.

To battle the plagiarism (抄袭), some schools in America have responded to ChatGPT by taking action, according to the New York Times.
New York City public schools, for example, recently prevented ChatGPT access on school computers and networks, saying “concerns about negative influence on students learning, and concerns about the safety of content.” Schools in other cities, including Seattle, have also limited its use.
A US’ online course provider Study. com recently asked 1, 000 students over the age of 18 about the use of ChatGPT in the classroom. The responses were surprising. Around 89 percent said they’ve used it on homework. Over 50 percent said they used ChatGPT to write an essay, while 22 percent admitted to having asked ChatGPT for a paper outline.
While the chatbot (聊天机器人) is raising fears of academic cheating on schools, some educators believe introducing the Al-ended tools to the academics could even overturn the traditional education.
“For researchers, finding valuable scientific problems and solving them in creative ways come first, and then writing academic papers. Some AI-enabled writing tools can create words or even write long text based on a few keywords shortly,” said Zhu Wei, a law professor in China. For example, ChatGPT helps writers gather writing materials for their papers, which not only increases the efficiency of the work, but also allows researchers to devote more energy to more creative work.
“Whether to use ChatGPT depends on whether to use it correctly. For those students who just use it to deal with homework or exams,” Zhu said, “this is putting the cart before the horse, which should be limited.” To avoid this problem, Zhu suggested introducing soft wares to help educators. He believes schools should accept ChatGPT as a teaching aid to unlock creativity in students. “The most important part of such tools is not to replace human thinking, but to improve human thinking.” Zhu said.

With all the wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, it’s not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us get through each and every day of our lives. “Putting a smile on someone’s face when you know they are feeling down in the dumps (处于沮丧中),” as the saying goes, “makes me feel good and warms my heart.”
