On November 15 in 2022, the United Nations (UN) reported that the number of people on Earth had grown to eight billion (8,000,000,000). That came just 11 years after the world reached seven billion people. The world faces challenges ahead as the population continues to grow.
The world’s population – the number of people on the planet – has grown rapidly over the last 200 years. In 1805, for the first time ever, the Earth had a billion people on it. It took over 100 years for that number to double to two billion. In less than 50 years, it had doubled again to four billion. Now, again in less than 50 years, the number has doubled once more to eight billion.
How fast local populations are growing depends a lot on where you are in the world. Typically, as countries become richer, their population growth slows. In some countries, like Japan, the number of people is actually shrinking. The greatest population growth these days is found in Asia and Africa.
Currently, China, with a population of 1.4 billion, is the country with the most people. That’s expected to change in the next year, when experts say India will pass China as the country with the world’s largest population. Other countries where rapid growth is expected through 2050 are the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Tanzania.
21. When did the world’s population reach 7 billion
A. In 2022. B. In 2011. C. In 1905. D. In 1805.
22. Which statement agrees with the UN’s report
A. Japan’s population is increasing sharply.
B. Pakistan’s population keeps dropping slowly.
C. A country’s population completely relies on its richness.
D. The world’s population is growing more rapidly since 1950.
23. Which country will probably have the largest population in 2023
A. China. B. Nigeria. C. India. D. Egypt.

Author Kochai tried for years to reconnect with his second grade teacher – a woman whom he credits with all the success he’s had in life. He hadn’t known any English at all, and it was Mrs. Lung who stayed after hours every day in their elementary school to teach Kochai one-on-one how to read and write – something he managed in just a year.
It was something Kochai never forgot, but after moving to new schools and districts, he lost track of her. The more Kochai’s career grew with success, the more he felt he had to reconnect with the special teacher who kick-started his life as an author.
It was over ten years that Kochai had been looking for his former teacher. Ten years’ calling school districts, searching names on social media, and visiting schoolhouses all proved fruitless. He said he felt like “running into another dead end,” as he explained in a Twitter thread.
“A few years earlier, after 99 Nights in Logar came out, someone reached out to me, out of the blue, on Facebook. It was Mrs. Lung’s husband!” he continued, “Clearly, Allen Lung heard about an article I wrote where I mentioned Mrs. Lung.”
That moment finally came when, after years of anxiety and joyful events both in Kochai’s life, he was doing a book signing event for his new book. “Mrs. Lung’s husband, Allen, rushed up to me, introduced himself, and brought me over to Mrs. Lung, and seven-year-old-me finally got to hug my 2nd grade teacher again.” he said.
He signed her copy with all the words he couldn’t say, but which had been in his head and heart for a decade and more.
24. How did Mrs. Lung help Kochai
A. By guiding his career planning.
B. By supporting him economically.
C. By teaching him English dutifully.
D. By keeping him company all the time.
25. What is the main idea of paragraph 3
A. Kochai made efforts to find Mrs. Lung.
B. Kochai showed on various social media.
C. Kochai failed to get in touch with Mrs. Lung.
D. Kochai sensed it hopeful to connect Mrs. Lung.
26. How did Kochai feel the moment he met Mrs. Lung
A. Disappointed. B. Overjoyed. C. Embarrassed. D. Satisfied.
27. What can we learn from the text
A Mrs Lung made a difference to Kochai’s life.
B. Kochai is satisfied with his success as an author.
C. Mrs. Lung influenced Kochai’s decision.
D. Author Kochai is grateful to Mrs. Lung.

China’s space medicine experts have started planning to set up a “space hospital” to serve astronauts, according to Du Jichen, a leading scientist and president of the Aerospace Center Hospital in Beijing.
“We are carrying out extensive research, experiments and tests on the ground to advance the first work on a space hospital that can be fixed inside a manned spacecraft like our space station. The purpose of this project is that it will enable our space explorers to travel deeper and stay healthy during their journey,” said Du.
“The research, design and construction of such a space-based clinic will also help to lead the development of our country’s medical technology and hardware, thus promoting the entire medical and healthcare sectors,” Du said. Chinese space medicine experts have been discussing a sustainable approach to keep astronauts fit and treat possible health conditions in lengthy spaceflights.
“A mainstream idea is that we can place a small ‘medical complex’ inside the space station or other spacecraft that can meet the basic needs of diagnosis and treatment,” the scientist said.
Du said that with the medical facility, astronauts will be able to use self-examination instruments to make a diagnosis if they do not feel well, and then can take timely medical measures. Currently, medical support for astronauts mostly relies on doctors on the ground.
The biggest challenge in this program is that engineers must figure out how to pack medical devices into a very limited space, Du said, adding that they need to upgrade current technologies and use interdisciplinary (跨学科) teamwork to achieve this goal. Medical scientists and engineers have conducted a great deal of research to prepare Chinese astronauts for the missions, Du said.
They have focused on the impact on astronauts’ health during long-term space missions, as well as investigating how the special environment inside the space station, especially its weightlessness, will affect astronauts’ health, particularly their cerebral functions.
28. What does the “space hospital” aim to do
A. Train astronauts in space. B. Keep astronauts healthy in space.
C. Ensure the safety of space explorers. D. Help to carry out more experiments.
29. What can be inferred from the text
A. The space hospital will improve astronauts’ medical conditions.
B. The medical & healthcare system needs to be updated.
C Long flights never cause health problems for astronauts.
D. Astronauts can get timely medical treatments.
30. What is the hardest for the project “space hospital”
A. How to examine and treat astronauts. B. How to advance medical technologies.
C. How to combine many subjects together. D. How to fit medical equipment to a limited space.
31. Which may affect astronauts’ health from the last paragraph
A. Spacecrafts. B. Doctors. C. Weightlessness. D. Spaceflights.

While the remaining 8 teams of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar compete in the quarter-finals, it is worth noting that it is not only soccer that has captured the world’s attention, but also the video assistant referee (VAR) technology.
Like it or hate it, the VAR is a part of football games today.
Many football fans question whether the system made the game better or if it added unnecessary some complication to the beautiful game, especially this time in Qatar, as a number of controversial (引起争议的) decisions were made involving VAR – it slows down the game, offside law (越位规则) is sometimes not flexible.
The introduction of the VAR means at the top-level football now tends to pause and delay with the on-field referee often waiting for decisions to be made by those located in offices often far away from the stadiums themselves.
Actually, the use of video match officials (VMOs) in football was included in the 2018/2019 edition of the Laws of the Game and was already used at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Since then, the system has been used in over 100 competitions worldwide.
Despite criticisms, FIFA thought VAR’s first show to be a success, with referee committee head Pierluigi Collina claiming that 99.3 percent of “match-changing” decisions were called correctly at the World Cup – “very, very close to perfection”. Without VAR, referees called 95% of incidents correctly.
We should admit that sports tech is still far from perfect in the field of sports events. People’s emotions are not towards those technologies themselves, but the current shortcomings of the application of the technology.
The controversies in the football field are not caused by VAR alone as there are too many uncertain factors on the court, which is a part of the game drama. For example, the penalty kick (点球) in the penalty area is judged in a variety of situations.
32. What made fans dissatisfied in Qatar
A. The use of VAR technology.
B. The results of soccer games.
C. The changes of match laws.
D. The decisions made by coaches.
33. What does the underlined word “referee” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Viewer. B. Athlete. C. Judge. D. Host.
34. Why did Collina favor the use of VAR
A. It reduces the burden of the referees.
B. It has become a part of football games.
C. It is widely applied in many fields of sports.
D. Its “match-changing” decisions proved more exact.
35. What is probably the best title for the text
A. World Cup 2022 is a turning point
B. Is VAR technology ruining football games
C. Should VAR be popularized in the sports world
D. The 2022 World Cup saw the first show of VAR

M: I got my first skateboard when I was 8. I was hoping to join the skateboard club at my local park, but I had to be at least 12 to have lessons. So I just watched lots of skateboarding videos and then practiced all the moves. My cousin was really good at doing jumps, but he was 13 and not interested in teaching a kid like me!
W: Where’s the best place for skateboarding
M: Well, for freestyle-boarding, any flat ground, like a basketball court, will do. The place I like most right now is the path that goes along the beach in my town.
W: I guess health is important. What do you do to stay fit
M: I used to skateboard for 3 hours every day. That wasn’t keeping me fit enough, though. So I’ve had a home gym put in and I’ve started to spend time in there.
W: Any advice for young people taking up skateboarding
M: Don’t waste money on a cheap board and don’t expect to learn straight away. It takes time and practice.
W: Thanks, Blayne.

M: One day, a garbage collector came to Ghaliya’s house in Jakarta. The man asked if she had an old mobile phone his children could use to get on the Internet. The man said it doesn’t matter if it is the ugly one, as long as his children can use it for learning from home.
Ghaliya works for a national newspaper. Shortly after the coronavirus hit Jakarta, she and 11 other journalists organized a group to provide food and money to people in need. They started hearing from parents who wanted their children to study online but lacked a way to use the Internet. Ghaliya thought of her meeting with the garbage collector when she and her group decided to provide mobile phones to poor students.
When the journalists announced their activity through social media, many people donated second-hand phones, while others gave cash donations. As of November, the journalists had collected more than 200 mobile phones and donations of more than $35,000. They used the money to buy more phones. They also paid for Internet use for those needing it. Currently, nearly 300 phones have been given to the students.

A
On November 15 in 2022, the United Nations (UN) reported that the number of people on Earth had grown to eight billion (8,000,000,000).

A. Mrs Lung made a difference to Kochai’s life.
B. Kochai is satisfied with his success as an author.

C. Long flights never cause health problems for astronauts.
B 29. A 30. D 31. C

A 33. C 34. D 35. B
根据第三段“especially this time in Qatar, as a number of controversial (引起争议的) decisions were made involving VAR – it slows down the game, offside law(越位规则) is sometimes not flexible.”(尤其是这次在卡塔尔,由于VAR做出了许多有争议的决定——这会减慢比赛速度,越位法有时并不灵活。) 故选A项。
根据第四段“The introduction of the VAR means at the top-level football now tends to pause and delay with the on-field referee often waiting for decisions to be made by those located in offices often far away from the stadiums themselves.”(VAR的引入意味着顶级足球现在往往会暂停和拖延,场上referee经常等待那些位于办公室的人做出决定,而办公室往往远离体育场。)
根据第六段“Despite criticisms, FIFA thought VAR’s first show to be a success, with referee committee head Pierluigi Collina claiming that 99.3 percent of “match-changing” decisions were called correctly at the World Cup – “very, very close to perfection”.
根据文章第二段“Like it or hate it, the VAR is a part of football games today.”(不管你喜不喜欢,VAR是当今足球比赛的一部分。) 第三段第一句“Many football fans question whether the system made the game better or if it added unnecessary some complication to the beautiful game”(许多足球迷质疑这个系统是让比赛变得更好,还是给这场漂亮的比赛增加了不必要的复杂性)。
The Secret To Hosting
It’s our nature to try and connect with our friends. And in many cases, it’s the job of one person — a host — to help promote the connections and to create a memorable experience for guests. ____36____:
Give your gathering a certain purpose
Before hosting, figure out your reason for gathering. Ask yourself how you actually want to spend your time, with whom, in what way. ___37___, but simply adding an intention can begin to shape the group’s experience of the night.
Think about your guest list
___38___. It can basically affect people’s behavior, and there’s actual science to it, too. Determining a clear purpose behind your gathering can help as well. It allows you to explain your reasons behind a particular guest list. And make sure you invite people who will not only fit your purpose but will be open to it too.
Set expectations in your invitation
Setting expectations can be a powerful tool. It can give guests a clear picture of the event ahead of time.____39____, so they know how to show up (and what to show up with) before even walking through the door. Finally, they can decide for themselves whether or not to come.
____40____.
When it comes to the event itself, a host should absolutely be able to make guests enjoy themselves. The generous host does three things: protects, connects and temporarily equalizes their guests.
Lastly, but certainly not least, don’t forget to enjoy yourself too!
A. Make guests feel at home
B. For starters, group size matters
C. A purpose doesn’t have to be serious
D. It often makes your guests feel confused
E. Here are some key points for you to follow
F. A clear intention is very important to a successful hosting
G. It prepares your guests through a temporary social contract
E 37. C 38. B 39. G 40. A

空前“And in many cases, it’s the job of one person — a host — to help promote the connections and to create a memorable experience for guests.(在许多情况下,这是一个人的工作——主人——帮助促进联系,为客人创造一个难忘的经历)”说明了当主人这个事情是很重要的,空后提到了一些方法,空格处起着承上启下的作用,E选项“Here are some key points for you to follow(这里有一些要点供你参考)”说明接下来有一些要点可以参考,引出了下文的一些方法,因此承上启下,符合语境,故选E。
空前“Before hosting, figure out your reason for gathering. Ask yourself how you actually want to spend your time, with whom, in what way.(在当主人之前,你要弄清楚聚会的原因。
空前“Setting expectations can be a powerful tool. It can give guests a clear picture of the event ahead of time.(设定期望是一个强大的工具。它可以让客人提前对活动有一个清晰的了解。)”说明设定期望的作用,空格处也应该是关于设定期望的作用的,G选项“It prepares your guests through a temporary social contract(它通过一种临时的社会契约让你的客人做好准备)”说明了预先设定的期望的作用,因此承接上文,也和后文“so they know how to show up (and what to show up with) before even walking through the door(所以他们甚至在进门之前就知道如何出现(以及带着什么出现))”所说的这种期望的作用相呼应,因此G选项承上启下,符合语境,故选G。
空格处是本段小标题,由空后的“When it comes to the event itself, a host should absolutely be able to make guests enjoy themselves.(当涉及到活动本身时,主人绝对应该能够让客人玩得开心。)”
