I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my songs, so I was really disappointed when the annual recital (音乐演奏会) was canceled. I had expected it for a long time and had got two of my favorite songs ready.
However, my mother had a great idea to turn this disappointment into something worthwhile. “You can go to Carriage House Senior Living to play your music,” my mother said cheerfully. “I believe the elderly there who don’t have families to visit them frequently, will enjoy the music. You might even be able to perform more than just two songs.”
I immediately thought it was a good idea. One of the things I don’t like about recitals is that I can only play a few songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win situation. Not only would I be able to perform more songs, but I would be able to make the elderly there feel happy.
My mother phoned Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform.
When that thrilling day finally came, my family and I drove to Carriage House. Through huge double doors, we entered an entryway that overlooked the spacious grand dining room. Just at the entrance to the dining room stood a piano as if it were waiting to play some music to liven up the place. At almost every table sat several white-haired women or men, enjoying their dinner and the company the crowded room provided. Despite the conversations at different tables, loneliness hung over the room like a dark cloud.
Nearly at once we were met by an elderly lady with a walking stick who introduced herself as Phyllis, the manager of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.

How could I play the songs without a piano I was on pins and needles as Phyllis walked slowly to the front of the crowd and said in a calm tone, “This girl is here to sing for us, but the piano seems a little nervous.” Almost immediately, there was some applause, and a few people came forward to help me plug in the piano and set up the microphone. When everything was ready, I took a deep breath and began my performance.
The tension went away and I began to enjoy the show with the elderly. A woman stood up and began to dance energetically around the room. Some swayed to the beat of the music in their chairs, while others tapped their toes. The audience gave a round of applause at the end of the performance. I realized it was much better than a piano recital, because almost everyone seemed to really appreciate my music, and I was proud of my ability to spread kindness to them. The concert was canceled, which was a fault on the right side, so I could give the gift of music to those who needed it most.

Thomas Mayfield had a major problem to solve in his fifth-grade classroom. “I’m not good at adding. I don’t know how to regroup or borrow. I’m not good at subtracting (减法). Or I don’t know my facts yet, and I’m a fifth-grader,” Mayfield’s students used to tell him. The 42-year-old math teacher from Fort Worth, Texas, took their frustrations to heart. He knew it was important to try something new, especially because most of his students were also struggling outside of the classroom. Mayfield teaches at Title I schools, where at least 40% of students are economically disadvantaged. He grew up going to these types of schools in Fort Worth, too. As a child, he enjoyed going to school, but always had great difficulty in learning math. Also, because he had to spend so much time helping deal with his family’s financial situation, it seemed harder for him and children in similar situations to do well in some subjects, especially math.
To reach students in a way that was familiar and inviting, he brought rap music to the classroom. He even made a few videos, in one of which he played an instrumental beat to Luniz’s song I Got 5 on It. It made his students excited, even crazy. Then they started rapping about the decimal point (小数点). “Now let’s take this thing apart,” Mayfield and his students sang in the video. “Let’s start with the tenths. Like a dime to a dollar, there’s 1 out of 10. Then we move to the hundredths, one part out of many. One out of 100, we call that a penny…”
They rapped and made popular music videos with thousands of views about math, and motivational songs like passing the big end-of-year exam.

The king became happy about his words and other painters got curious about the young painter. The king gave him permission and the young painter started working on the portrait. Finally, after taking a long time, he said the portrait was ready!
