Today’s grandparents are joining their grandchildren on social media, but the different generations’ online habits couldn’t be more different. In the UK the over-55 s are joining Facebook in increasing numbers, meaning that they will soon be the site’s second biggest user group, with 3.5 million users aged 55-64 and 2.9 million over-65s.
Sheila, aged 59, says, “I joined to see what my grandchildren are doing, as my daughter posts videos and photos of them. It’s a much better way to see what they’re doing than waiting for letters and photos in the post. That’s how we did it when I was a child, but I think I’m lucky I get to see so much more of their lives than my grandparents did.”
Interestingly, Sheila’s grandchildren are less likely to use Facebook themselves. Children under 17 in the UK are leaving the site - only 2.2 million users are under 17 -but they’re not going far from their smartphones. Chloe, aged 15, even sleeps with her phone. “It’s my alarm clock so I have to,’ she says. “I look at it before I go to sleep and as soon as I wake up.”
Unlike her grandmother’s generation, Chloe’s age group is spending so much time on their phones at home that they are missing out on spending time with their friends in real life. Sheila, on the other hand, has made contact with old friends from school she hasn’t heard from in forty years. ”We use Facebook to arrange to meet all over the country,” she says. “It’s changed my social life completely.”
Parents have an important role to play if they want their kids to spend more time in real life. Peter, 38, who spends most of his time in front of a screen, is recently determined to set a better example to his kids. In the evening or at weekends, he would leave his smartphone home and take his kids out to nature.
4. What can we learn from Paragraph 1
A. Older people have difficulty using social media.
B. Children spend more time with their grandparents.

D. Social media have become more friendly to the elderly.
5. How does Sheila feel about social media
A. Worried. B. Satisfied. C. Excited. D. Disappointed.
6. What can be concluded from the passage
A. People tend to have less social life as they get older.
B. Young people are getting away from their smartphone.
C. More young people choose to meet their friends in person.
D Social media actually help old people to meet their friends.
7. What’s the best title for this passage
A. Different Online Habits Across Generations B. The Good Old Days Without Smartphones
C. The Next Generation of Social Media D. The Use of Smartphones at School
C
Companies which sell liquids like drinks or shampoo depend on bottles made of plastic or glass for their packaging. But as customers have become more worried about the environment, many companies have begun working to develop paper bottles.
Paper bottles have many advantages. They are easy to recycle and weigh less than glass or plastic bottles, meaning they’ll require less energy to produce and to move around.
A company called Paboco has been working with many large companies to develop paper bottles. Clearly, one of the biggest challenges is keeping a paper bottle from leaking (渗漏). Therefore, many companies are lining their bottles with a thin sheet of plastic. Though this liner can be taken away and recycled, many recycling programs don’t have the right machines to deal with these liners.
A Danish beer company called Carlsberg is working with Paboco on a paper bottle called the “Green Fiber Bottle”. In the future the company hopes to use a “bio-plastic” that will break down naturally over time. A company named Diageo has just announced the first paper bottle that’s completely plastic-free. Instead of a plastic liner, a non-plastic coating will be used on the inside of the bottles. This should make the bottle fully recyclable. Diageo says they’ll use the bottle with their whiskey in 2023.
However, there’s still lots of testing to be done before paper bottles can replace glass or plastic panies will need to see how long liquids can be stored in the bottles, and make sure the bottles don’t influence the taste. But with so many companies working toward the same goal, it’s likely that we can expect to see paper bottles on store shelves in the near future.
8. What forces many companies to develop paper bottles
A. The cost of making plastic or glass bottles.
B. The customers’ caring about the environment.
C. The energy needed to produce ordinary bottles.
D. The difficulty in shaping the plastic or glass bottles.
9. Why are plastic liners used inside the bottles
A. To make them easy to recycle. B. To make bottles reusable.
C. To prevent liquid from escaping. D. To lower the production cost.
10. What can we infer about the making of paper bottles
A. Non-plastic coatings may be hard to recycle.
B. Paper bottles can’t go without a plastic liner.
C There’s still a long way to go to reach the goal.
D Not all paper bottles are better than glass bottles.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. Traditional Bottles or Paper Bottles
B. Companies Work to Develop Paper Bottles
C. Paper Bottles Are Getting Increasingly Popular
D. Advantages and Disadvantages of Paper Bottles
D
As humans encroach (侵入) more and more on wildlife habitats, animals are finding that the best way to survive isn’t to pack up and move—it’s to adapt to the night life. A variety of previously daytime animals such as foxes, deer and boars have become active at night to avoid human activity out of fear. But this nighttime switch comes with its own risks.
Researchers looked at how 62 species of animals on six continents changed their behavior in response to human activities such as hunting, farming, and development. The studies employed various technologies to follow the animals, from GPS trackers to motion-activated cameras.
Once night falls, the animals surveyed became far more active than they were before humans arrived, bunting and looking for food in the dark. For example, animals that used to split their activity evenly between day and night typically increased their nighttime activity to 68%.
The team also found the animals responded similarly to these human encroachments, regardless of whether human activity directly affected them. So, a deer might become more active at night simply because it sees humans hiking nearby, not because it’s being hunted.
The researchers believe these nighttime behaviors not only allow humans and animals to coexist more peacefully, they may be able to give us hints as to how to plan conservation efforts accordingly, such as limiting human activity during times when a specific species is more active. But moving to the nightlife could also have downsides for these animals. A nighttime lifestyle can reduce an animal’s ability to hunt and find food successfully and can even affect its ability to find a mate. Switching to a nighttime lifestyle can affect natural patterns of life even if these animals are doing so to reduce their interaction with humans. So, just because animals are becoming more active at night doesn’t mean they’ve escaped the influence of humans.
12. Why are animals becoming more active at night
A. It is easier to find food at night.
B. It is easier to escape being hunted.
C. They can be less affected by human.
D. They have got used to nightlife.
13. How did the researchers find the animals’ behavioral changes
A. They followed and watched the animals.
B. They used modern technologies.
C. They compared different animals.
D. They found more animals at night.
14. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph
A. Any human encroachment can affect animals.
B. Animals can be affected only when being hunted.
C. Deer can get used to nightlife easily.
D. Animals should stay away from humans.
15. Which word can possibly replace the underlined word in paragraph 5
A dangers B. strengths C. possibilities D. Disadvantages

Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to participate in the competition, but Emily said, “I’m afraid to take part in it.” Her mother said, “It’s okay; just do it bravely.” Emily followed her mama’s advice and decided to give herself a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid (胆小的) to walk onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily (颤抖地) forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing, but her voice was so low. What’s worse, she was so nervous that she forgot the lyrics (歌词) after singing a few words. Being laughed at by others, embarrassed and shy, she ran away from the stage.

C. There’s still a long way to go to reach the goal.
D. Not all paper bottles are better than glass bottles.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. Traditional Bottles or Paper Bottles
B. Companies Work to Develop Paper Bottles
C. Paper Bottles Are Getting Increasingly Popular
D. Advantages and Disadvantages of Paper Bottles
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. B

A. dangers B. strengths C. possibilities D. Disadvantages
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. D

【15题详解】
词句猜测题。由文章最后一段“But moving to the nightlife could also have downsides for these animals. A nighttime lifestyle can reduce an animal’s ability to hunt and find food successfully and can even affect its ability to find a mate. Switching to a nighttime lifestyle can affect natural patterns of life even if these animals are doing so to reduce their interaction with humans. (但转向夜生活也可能给这些动物带来 。夜间生活方式会降低动物成功狩猎和觅食的能力,甚至会影响其寻找配偶的能力。转向夜间生活方式会影响自然生活模式,即使这些动物这样做是为了减少与人类的互动。)”可知,这里主要讲夜间生活给动物带来的“不利”,所以猜测downsides表“不利或者劣势”。故选D项。

Last Sunday, when my parents went out shopping, I suddenly got an idea: why not give the rooms a thorough cleaning Firstly I collected all the books, newspapers and other things scattered in the rooms and put them in place. Then I wiped the dust off all the furniture. After that, I swept and mopped the floors.
At this very moment, my parents came back and were quite surprised to see all the rooms tidy and floors shining. My mother gave me a hug and I could see satisfaction in her eyes. Tired as I was, I never felt so happy.

Once there was a little girl named Emily. Although her singing was very pleasant to hear, lacking of courage, she never dared to sing in front of strangers.
One summer, the neighborhood where she lived would hold a singing competition.
Some naughty boys ran after her and said, “Emily, coward (胆小鬼)! Emily, coward!” Emily didn’t argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could.
