M: Hello. I am phoning to make a complaint regarding a flight that I took recently.
W: OK. What is the nature of your complaint
M: Well, I was seated beneath an air conditioner. Unfortunately, the air conditioning on the plane was broken, so I spent the entire flight uncomfortably warm. Moreover, the in-flight staff seemed unaware of the issue.

W: Hi, Thomas, how are you enjoying our university course so far
M: Yeah, I think it’s good.
W: Why did you decide to study sports science Didn’t you want to be a professional athlete when you were at high school
M: Yeah – that was my goal, and all my classmates assumed I would achieve it.
W: Exactly! So what happened Did your mum and dad want you to be more academic
M: Not at all. Perhaps they should have pushed me harder, though.
W: What makes you say that
M: I was chosen to go out to Kenya to train and run with some of the top teenage athletes in the world. But once we started competing, I quickly realized I should have practised more. I was far behind many.
W: I’m sorry to hear that.
M: It’s OK. I’m over it now and I think it’s much better to do a university course and this one has such a variety of sports-related areas. I find the course to be a source of relief for me.
W: Oh, I agree. That’s exactly what our professors showed us in the first class. I chose it because of that.
Text 10
A British woman named Preet Chandi recently skied, alone, to the South Pole, making history by being the first woman of color to complete it.
Chandi grew up in a community in England. In 2012, she graduated from college, becoming the first in her family to earn a degree. After running her first half-marathon, Chandi’s appetite for greater challenges started to grow. When her friend mentioned Antarctic, she had the thought to explore Antarctic.
Having trained and prepared for many years, she set out. Chandi skied uphill against strong wind, stopping at night to put up a tent in low temperature. She put in up to 11 hours on certain days. During the journey, Chandi shared her experiences on the blog where she documented activities such as listening to adventurous stories, consuming various freeze-dried meals, and reflecting on celebrating the holiday season as one would in a typical year. On those days when she felt depressed the voice notes left by her friends inspired her to move on. After forty days’ persistence, she finally arrived at the South Pole.
