I’m used to seeing small leaps in technological progress, but occasionally, there are things that will still shock me. At the end of last year, a company called OpenAI released a truly jaw-dropping demonstration of a new AI technology that feels almost like technology has skipped ahead by a few generations.
This new AI technology is called ChatGPT, a computer program that can understand and respond to human language. It is trained on a lot of text, so it can understand what people are saying and respond in a way that sounds like a real person. What’s even more amazing is that ChatGPT seems frighteningly human in its ability to understand questions and answer them competently. “Write a story about Leonardo da Vinci in the style of Roald Dahl,” you can ask it, and it’ll spin up a pretty good children’s story.
One area where I’ve found ChatGPT to be enormously useful is its ability to write computer code. This has particularly amazed me as unlike the English language, when you write code it has to be very precise and carefully structured – but when I asked it to write me a program that would put some data into a database for me, in a particularly complex way, within seconds it generated something that would have taken me hours to do manually (人工地).
ChatGPT isn’t completely human, however. For example, it sometimes generates things that sound true, but are actually just nonsense. This is because of the way the AI learns through pattern recognition. There’s no real intelligence operating there – it is just repeating something based on what it has “read” before. ChatGPT is better at some tasks than others: it can write a brilliant invitation email, but its ability to rhyme leaves a lot to be desired.
And this is why I’m pretty convinced that ChatGPT is going to change the world, sooner rather than later. It’s already hugely impressive, but what exists at the moment is just a demonstration. Once the same AI is built into other apps and can connect to the live internet to learn more, it will become even more sophisticated. Our computers will no longer be just our word processors, but our writing partners too.
24. What can we learn about ChatGPT from the second paragraph
A. It can talk to people with emotion.
B. It seems like having a conversation with a real person.
C. It is unable to generate original content.
D. What it can do frightens many people.
25. Which aspect about ChatGPT’s ability to generate responses does the author feel to be particularly useful
A. Its efficiency. B. Its precision. C. Its structure. D. Its diversity.
26. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. AI cannot think the same way as humans do.
B. There’s no real intelligence in the world.
C. ChatGPT has some limitations.
D. ChatGPT is better than other chatbot AI.
27. What is the author’s attitude toward ChatGPT
A. Optimistic. B. Worried. C. Doubtful. D. Conservative.
【答案】24. B 25. A 26. C 27. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章对ChatGPT的优势、缺陷和前景进行了介绍。
【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“It is trained on a lot of text, so it can understand what people are saying and respond in a way that sounds like a real person. What’s even more amazing is that ChatGPT seems frighteningly human in its ability to understand questions and answer them competently.”(它接受了大量文本的训练,所以它能理解人们在说什么,并以一种听起来像真人的方式做出回应。
根据第三段“This has particularly amazed me as unlike the English language, when you write code it has to be very precise and carefully structured – but when I asked it to write me a program that would put some data into a database for me, in a particularly complex way, within seconds it generated something that would have taken me hours to do manually (人工地).”(这让我特别惊讶,因为不像英语,当你写代码时,它必须非常精确和仔细地结构化——但是当我要求它为我写一个程序,以一种特别复杂的方式将一些数据输入数据库时,它在几秒钟内生成了一些我手动需要几个小时才能完成的东西。)可知,关于ChatGPT生成响应的能力,作者觉得它的效率特别有作用。故选A项。
【26题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“ChatGPT isn’t completely human, however. For example, it sometimes generates things that sound true, but are actually just nonsense.”(然而,ChatGPT并不完全是人类。例如,它有时生成的东西听起来是真的,但实际上只是无稽之谈。)可知,第四段主要谈的是ChatGPT的局限性。故选C项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“And this is why I’m pretty convinced that ChatGPT is going to change the world, sooner rather than later.”(这就是为什么我非常确信ChatGPT迟早会改变世界。)可推断出,作者对ChatGPT持乐观态度。故选A项。

Favored by many internet influencers, the city of Zibo, once a sleepy industrial city, has gone viral on Chinese social media platforms. The topic Zibo “barbecue” on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, was played 4.96 billion times since the city stormed the Internet for over a month. On 29 April, Zibo Railway Station saw a record 87,000 train trips to and from the station, according to Chinese news website Caixin.
Local authorities in Zibo have been quick to respond to the sudden flow of visitors. A barbecue zone that can accommodate 10,000 people, featuring live band performances, was built overnight. Volunteers have been dispatched to the railway station to offer advice and recommendations to tourists. Designated (指定的) buses and trains bring tourists to and from the hottest barbecue spots. The government has even threatened to punish profiteering hotels who raise prices by more than 50% .
What makes Zibo barbecue so special is that it does offer a distinctive (独特的) dining experience. The skewers (烤串) are 70-80 percent cooked before they are brought to the table, where diners can finish cooking them on their own stoves, offering an immersive dining experience.
Zibo’s low prices are also appealing. Many college students in Shandong have made concrete plans to enjoy Zibo barbecue at the least cost, and traveling back and forth by train for only 200 yuan ($29.1). So what better way to attract adventurous, hungry college students with a tight budget other than “tasty barbecue that makes you full for only 50 yuan!”
The locals seem happy enough about the arrival of visitors and shy away from hot spots to make space for outsiders, saying they are proud that their hometown has gained nationwide fame.
28 What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. The history of Zibo.
B. The influence of social media.
C. The newfound popularity of Zibo.
D. The crowdedness of Zibo Railway Station.
29. What makes Zibo barbecue attractive to college students
A. Unique dining experience. B. Convenient transportation.
C. Wonderful performances. D. Affordable prices.
30. What is the local people’s attitude to the arrival of tourists
A. Favorable. B. Worried. C. Unconcerned. D. Critical.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To promote an industrial city.
B. To introduce barbecue in Zibo.
C. To explain how to attract tourists.
D. To show the popularity of barbecue.
【答案】28. C 29. D 30. A 31. B

Plastic is under attack these days for the environmental problems it causes. But sustainability-minded shoppers might not be aware that many organic farmers — like their traditional farming neighbors — also rely on plastic. It’s spread over the ground as a form of mulch (覆盖物) to control weeds, conserve water and aid plant growth.
The flat plastic prevents sunlight from hitting the ground and encouraging weed growth. In addition to weed control, plastic works well with drip irrigation (滴灌), a system that conserves water by delivering it directly to plant roots. And the plastic also control soil temperature in ways that increase harvest for farmers. Heat-loving crops — like tomatoes, peppers and eggplants — will mature weeks earlier on plastic versus bare ground.
Yet there is the disturbing problem of waste. At the end of the season, the vast majority of the plastic is lifted from the ground and then taken to landfills, meaning a major cost and labor challenge for farmers.
That’s why so many farmers want an alternative. Although natural mulches like straw (稻草) and paper that break down in the soil do exist, they are too costly or for many farmers. But if a plastic mulch could slowly degrade (降解) over the course of the season, disappearing into the field and reducing waste, it would be a dream solution.
Right now, however, no such solution exists for organic farms, because the biodegradable plastic mulches on the market all contain petroleum-based materials. According to the law, any biodegradable mulch could only be used if it was 100 percent “bio-based” — that is, made entirely from plant materials. Hopefully, a company would bring a bio-based mulch to market — one that acts like plastic but doesn’t contain any petroleum-based materials and so would be approved for use in organic farming.
32. What can be inferred from paragraph 1
A. Plastic causes no environmental problems.
B. Plastic bags are still used by many shoppers.
C. Plastic is spread over plants to control weeds.
D. Plastic is used in traditional and organic farming.
33. What is a benefit of plastic used in farming
A. It allows sunlight to hit the ground.
B. It helps some plants to mature earlier.
C. It is does harm to heat-loving crops.
D. It protects plant roots from getting damaged.
34. Why do many farmers want an alternative mulch
A. Because plastic mulch breaks down easily.
B. Because plastic mulch ends up as waste.
C. Because they prefer natural mulches.
D. Because they have less space for landfills.
35. What can we learn about the biodegradable mulches on the market
A. They are made entirely from plant materials.
B. They contain no petroleum-based materials.
C. They are not 100 hundred percent “bio-based”.
D. They would be allowed for use in organic farming soon.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. B 35. C

Memories of how Grandpa taught her to make potato rose in her mind. She sighed and missed Grandpa so much.
Alexis cut the potatoes and mixed the boiled potatoes, some sauces and a little salt and peppers in a bowl. But it didn’t taste right. Alexis tried a bite of the salad mixture, wondering what was missing. Seeing her frown, Mom suggested, “What about something spicy Your Grandpa loved spicy things.”
“You’re right! Maybe he put a jalapeno pepper in it,” Alexis said, cutting up a bright green jalapeno and adding it to the bowl.
It was closer, but it still didn’t taste right. Alexis was drooping her head, disappointed. “Should we look in a cookbook ”
“Grandpa was never one to follow a recipe,” Dad entered the kitchen and said.
It was true. People loved Grandpa’s potato salad because it was one of a kind. Alexis remembered posing with Grandpa for a photo while they were making the salad.
Photo! That gave her an idea. Alexis hurried to the bookcase and found an old photo album. She immediately flipped it open, expecting to find clues in the photos there. Lots of photos showed Grandpa and Grandma cooking together. Dad laughed, “He and Grandma loved to tease each other but he always called her Honey.”
“Do you think he put honey in the potato salad ” Mum asked.
“It is worth a try,” said Alexis. She stirred some honey into the bowl.

Then, delighted and expected, she cut the onion with tears in her eyes. Finally, adding the onions into the salad and mixed it, Alexis’s palms getting sweaty. Heart raising, she held the salad to her family and waited for their try.
With hesitation, the family tasted the potato salad with onions in it. Nodding their heads at the same time, smile flickered across everyone’s face. They eventually figured out Grandpa’s recipe. Finally, Alexis completed the salad and took part in the contest. As the result that Alexis’s potato salad won was announced, Alexis was thinking about Grandpa, her tears welling up uncontrollably. She hugged the Golden Potato to her chest and wore a shining smile, saying “Just because of the onions.” It’s not only a recipe for delicious food but also a recipe for a happy family.

Many college students in Shandong have made concrete plans to enjoy Zibo barbecue at the least cost and traveling back and forth by train for only 200 yuan ($29.1).

35 What can we learn about the biodegradable mulches on the market
A. They are made entirely from plant materials.
B. They contain no petroleum-based materials.
C. They are not 100 hundred percent “bio-based”.
D. They would be allowed for use in organic farming soon.

It was time for the annual Potato-Salad Contest in Russet Park. After trying for the third time, Alexis shook her head sadly. There was no way she would win the Golden Potato again because Grandpa wasn’t here this year.
It was closer but it still didn’t taste right.
But it still wasn’t quite right. Alexis’ heart sank, on the verge of giving up. Dad kept flipping the album. At the end of the album was the picture of Grandpa and Alexis making the salad together.
