Most of you are probably familiar with various stories of searching alien life, but have you heard about the scientist who was responsible for detecting the first traces of intelligent life lurking throughout our galaxy This is Frank Drake’s story.
At the age of 8, his father one day told Drake there are other worlds in space, which astounded him. He had no idea that such a thing was a possibility-he thought Earth was it. So he wondered, what are they like Are the people the same as us Do they look the same way we do What’s their planet like And of course, at that time, there was no way that those questions could be answered in the slightest.
Later on, when he was in college, he chose the elementary astronomy course. In the course, he went to the campus observatory, and one of the things he observed was the planet Jupiter. Even through a small telescope, it was just very clear that it was another world but not a picture in a book or something, which made Drake deeply absorbed. Frank Drake is mostly known for developing the Drake equation (德雷克方程式), which is a mathematical equation developed to estimate the number of detectable alien civilizations in the Milky Way.
People always say that the search for alien life has failed. “You’ve been searching for 60 years and you haven’t found anything. So doesn’t that say that intelligent life is very rare ” “That’s wrong, because the amount of searching we’ve done has hardly touched the number of possibilities that are out there. We’ve only covered a tiny. tiny fraction of all the possibilities,” Drake said, “When you spend your entire life on the things you love, you live a better life than most people,” he added.
24. What does the underlined word “astounded” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Touched. B. Motivated. C. Puzzled. D. Amazed.

B. His success in developing the famous Drake equation.
C. His knowing of the fact that there are other worlds in space.
D. His choice of the the elementary astronomy course in college.
26. What does Drake think of the alien searching work
A. It is totally a failure B. The alien life is rare.
C. It has a long way to go. D. There are many possibilities.
27. Which words best describe Drake
A. Curious and brave. B. Creative and intelligent.
C. Talented and diligent. D. Passionate and persistent.

Released on Aug 30, a three-episode web series titled Escape From the British Museum has gone viral online for its touching and innovative narrative (叙事). The series follows the journey home of a Chinese jade teapot that has come to life as a girl. She runs away from the British Museum and comes across a Chinese journalist who helps the artifact return to China. The series, created by two Chinese vloggers, aims to raise broader awareness of Chinese artifacts that were stolen or looted (掠夺) from China and are displayed or stored in the British Museum.
The video series echoes the Chinese people’s call for the British Museum to return these Chinese artifacts. However, some UK media outlets said that the video series promotes nationalism (民族主义). In fact, every country whose artifacts are displayed or stored in the British Museum wants them back. These countries, such as Greece, Nigeria and Sudan, have already issued their demands for the return of artifacts. It’s fair enough to say these demands are shared. They can correct centuries-old wrongs by having the UK return artifacts to their rightful homes.
An opinion in the UK newspaper The Telegraph said that if the British Museum gives back its collection of artifacts, then nationalism will win over humanity’s common heritage. It also said that the artifacts were “lawfully acquired (合法取得) ” by the UK. By “lawfully acquired”, does the writer mean the artifacts were acquired with the “help” of machine guns and warships Or does he mean that the cultural artifacts of African, Asian and American countries should be kept in the hands of looters, rather than in their land of origin
28. What is the video series Escape from the British Museum mainly about
A. Cultural artifacts looted by the UK. B. Hidden dangers in the British Museum.
C. The arguments about the British museum. D. The journey of a Chinese artifact coming home.

C. The desire of stolen artifacts to be returned. D. Efforts made by Chinese activists to get artifacts back.

A. To show the UK did something wrong in the past.
B. To stress China’s demands are shared by many countries.
C. To emphasize former colonized countries have grown stronger.
D. To highlight diverse artifacts are housed in the British Museum.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward the opinion in The Telegraph
A. It’s totally unacceptable. B. It’s a little bit reasonable.
C. It lacks enough evidence. D. It shows the writer’s ignorance.
D
Three-dimensional printing, a technology that creates objects layer by layer, has revolutionized (变革) the way we make things. Recently, a group of Chinese scientists took things a step further by using this technology to create realistic replicas (复制品) of human organs.
Previously, it was challenging to create a single material that could print different human organs due to their complexity. The research team from Chinese Academy of Sciences started by using hydrogel (水凝), a soft gel-like material as the main ingredient.
Human organs have various textures (质地), with our brains being the softest. To replicate the hardness of materials like bone, the researchers added metallic elements to the hydrogel and adjusted their ratio (比例) to create the texture of each organ. Besides, to make sure the printing results are correct, the team used light-curing (光固化) technology in the 3D printing process. A special lamp was placed under the printing machine, causing the gel to become solid right after it was printed.
According to the team’s paper published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials, they are able to produce organ models including the brain, lungs, and intestines (肠). These 3D printed organ models are essential for medical researches, such as testing medical equipment and demonstrating pared to live organs and animal models, they are also ethically (伦理上) acceptable since they are printed artificially. They can help researchers develop new treatments more efficiently, due to their lower relative cost, commented the Alliance of Advanced Biomedical Engineering website. However, this method is still developing, and experts are hoping it will be used in the medical field within a decade, according to CNN.
32. What was the main challenge in printing human organs
A. The complexity of human organs. B. The various textures of human organs.
C. The difficulty in creating proper materials. D. The lack of appropriate printing technology.
33. How did the research team ensure the accuracy of the printing results
A. By controlling the number of metallic elements. B. By using light-curing technology before printing.
C. By solidifying the gel immediately after printing. D. By putting a special lamp on the printing machine.
34. What can we in fer from the last paragraph
A. This technology is still in the period of theory.
B. 3D printed organs are of great medical significance.
C. The printed organs are more effective in the treatment.
D. Live organs and animal models are more acceptable ethically.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. The Power of 3D Printing B. Printing the Body Parts
C. Revolutionary Technology D. Finding New Materials for Organs

Text 10
M: Now I would like to give you some details about the history of Thanksgiving Day in the United States. In 1620, a boat filled with more than one hundred people sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to settle in the New World. This religious group had begun to question the beliefs of the Church of England and they wanted to separate from it. They settled in what is now the state of Massachusetts. Their first winter in the New World was difficult. They had arrived too late to grow many crops, and without fresh food, half of them died from diseases. The following spring the local Indians taught them how to grow corn, a new food for the colonists. They showed the mother crops to grow in the unfamiliar soil and how to hunt and fish.
In the autumn of 1621, plentiful crops of corn, beans and pumpkins were harvested. The new comers had much to be thankful for, so a feast was planned. They invited the local Indian chief and 90 Indians. The people from Europe roasted turkeys and shared with local Indians. They learned how to cook different kinds of com from the Indians.
