Milan’s most famous mural (壁画), Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, is hidden away on a wall of the dining hall adjoining the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie. It’s a masterful psychological study and one of the world’s most iconic images.
Centuries of damage has left the mural in a fragile state despite 22 years of restoration, which was completed in 1999. Da Vinci himself is partly to blame: his experimental mix of oil and tempera (蛋彩画) was applied between 1495 and 1498, rather than within a week as is typical of fresco (湿壁画) techniques. But the most damage was caused by restorers in the 19th century, whose use of alcohol and cotton wool removed an entire layer. Yet the work’s condition does little to lessen its astonishing beauty.
You may very well kick yourself if you miss it, so book in advance or sign up for a guided city tour. English-language guided tours (?3.50 on top of the regular ticket price) take place at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday. Again, you’ll need to book ahead.

I’m not sure what I had in mind when I signed up to volunteer in Ghana. But Ghana seems different than the other developing countries I have encountered. Little children like to point us out to their mothers, and my hand waves back are often met with stormy silence. Perhaps the best part is that we aren’t treated like tourists: we pay the same price as the locals for our breakfast. We blend in (融入) while we stick out, a strange paradox (矛盾).
When I arrived I told the people in charge of the program to place me where there was the biggest need for help. That ended up being this 12m×10m run-down school room out in the slums (贫民区). When I entered the classroom, I found there were between 80 and 120 children under the age of 6 in it. It reminded me of overturning a rock and having hundreds of ants run loose. There was no rhyme or reason in this room: the children maintained the discipline themselves.
Within days, we had learned the names of those children who finally attended the class, al thirty or so of them. The one that impressed me most was a five-year-old girl sitting at the front row, studiously quiet. She learned everything we taught her, at a pace that took my breath away. She far outpaced any Western five-year-old I’d ever worked with and fueled my passion to keep going.
Now I look at this run-down classroom and these children in their ragged clothes, thinking of how different they are and how differently we can change their lives. Then the usual chaos attacks, I hold up a bag above my head and within ten seconds, the classroom is quiet. All the children are staring at my bag of candy and I realize maybe they’re not that different after all.
4. How do the local mothers react to the author’s greeting
A. They remain silent. B. They treat her to breakfast.
C. They offer to be her guide. D. They let their children respond.
5. What can be inferred about the classroom in paragraph 2
A. The classroom was very large.
B. The classroom was full of ants.
C. The classroom was poorly equipped.
D. The classroom looked extremely crowded.
6. What effect did the five-year-old girl have on the author
A. She decided to leave Ghana.
B. She chose to follow her example.
C. She would continue her volunteer work.
D. She thought poorly of Western five-year-olds.
7. What do students in Ghana and Western countries have in common according to the author
A. They are eager to learn.
B. They can never resist candy.
C. They are willing to change their lives.
D. They cannot keep silent for over ten seconds.
A 5. D 6. C 7. B
由文章第一段“Little children like to point us out to their mothers, and my hand waves back are often met with stormy silence. (小孩子们喜欢把我们指给妈妈看,而我的挥手却常常遭遇惊涛骇浪般的沉默。)”可知,面对作者的问候,当地母亲们保持沉默。故选A项。
由文章第二段“When I entered the classroom, I found there were between 80 and 120 children under the age of 6 in it. It reminded me of overturning a rock and having hundreds of ants run loose. There was no rhyme or reason in this room: the children maintained the discipline themselves.(当我走进教室时,我发现里面有80到120个6岁以下的孩子。这让我想起了掀翻一块石头和数百只蚂蚁逃跑的情景。这个房间里没有韵律,也没有理由:孩子们自己遵守纪律。)”可知,教室看起来非常拥挤。故选D项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第三段“She far outpaced any Western five-year-old I’d ever worked with and fueled my passion to keep going.(她远远超过了我教过的任何一个五岁的西方孩子,激发了我继续前进的热情。)”
由文章最后一段“Then the usual chaos attacks, I hold up a bag above my head and within ten seconds, the classroom is quiet. All the children are staring at my bag of candy and I realize maybe they’re not that different after all.(然后,通常的混乱袭来,我把一个袋子举过头顶,不到十秒钟,教室就安静了。所有的孩子都盯着我的糖果袋看,我意识到也许他们根本没什么不同。)”可知,加纳学生和西方国家的学生一样,都抗拒不了糖果。故选B项.
C
There is nothing quite like stepping into the shower at any time of the day. A warm shower certainly sounds more comfortable, but a number of influential people have recently said that for them, taking a freezing cold shower every morning is the best thing they have ever started to do. Take Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and CEO of Twitter, for example. He said in an interview, “Nothing has given me more mental confidence than being able to go straight from room temperature into the cold.” For us, starting the day in the freezing cold is the worst thing anyone can suggest!
Recently in Holland, 3,000 people volunteered to take part in an experiment. They were all instructed to take a warm shower every day. When they were about to finish, they were told to reduce the temperature for a 30-second burst of freezing water. Following the experiment, most of them said that the cold shower had given them a surge in energy that felt similar to drinking strong pared with others who had not taken the cold shower, they said they were less likely to cal their office and say they were sick. What’s more, 64 percent thought they would continue with the cold showers even though the experiment had come to an end.
This change in energy has been explained by Professor Andreas Michalsen from Berlin. “Cells in our skin that respond to light and heat react when coming into freezing water. These cells, called receptors, send a message to the brain which releases endorphins (内啡肽) into the bloodstream. Endorphins are chemicals that help reduce body pain or can help you feel more relaxed or full of energy.”
Cold water arouses blood flow which can reduce the itching (瘙痒) and bleeding caused by a skin condition called eczema (湿疹). Eczema can make your skin itch. This is good news for people suffering from eczema. So would you take a freezing cold shower every day
8. What is Jack Dorsey’s attitude towards cold showers
A. Intolerant. B. Favorable. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
9. What can we learn about the participants in the experiment
A. They began with warm showers.
B. They had taken cold showers for years.
C. They took cold showers every two days.
D. They drank strong coffee before taking cold showers.
10. What does the underlined word “surge” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Balance. B. Saving. C. Rise. D. Loss.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. A cause of a skin disease.
B. The seriousness of eczema.
C. An advantage of taking cold showers.
D. The explanation of the experiment result.
B 9. A 10. C 11. C
根据第一段“Take Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and CEO of Twitter, for example. He said in an interview, “Nothing has given me more mental confidence than being able to go straight from room temperature into the cold.”(以Twitter的联合创始人兼首席执行官杰克·多尔西为例。他在一次采访中说,“没有什么比直接从室温进入寒冷环境更能给我精神上的信心了。”)”可知,Jack Dorsey认为没有什么比直接从室温进入寒冷环境更能给自己带来精神上的自信了,因此推断Jack Dorsey很喜欢洗冷水澡,对洗冷水澡是赞同的。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的“They were all instructed to take a warm shower every day. When they were about to finish, they were told to reduce the temperature for a 30-second burst of freezing water.( 他们都被要求每天洗个温水澡。当他们即将结束时,他们被告知要用30秒的冰水来降低温度。)”可知,他们从温水澡开始。故选A。
根据画线词所在句“Following the experiment, most of them said that the cold shower had given them a surge in energy that felt similar to drinking strong coffee.(在实验之后,大多数人说,冷水洗澡会给他们带来一种与喝浓咖啡相似的能量的surge。)”
根据最后一段内容“Cold water arouses blood flow which can reduce the itching (瘙痒) and bleeding caused by a skin condition called eczema (湿疹). Eczema can make your skin itch. This is good news for people suffering from eczema. So would you take a freezing cold shower every day ( 冷水能促进血液流动,从而减少因湿疹引起的瘙痒和出血。湿疹会让你的皮肤发痒。这对湿疹患者来说是个好消息。你会每天洗个冷水澡吗 )”可知,该段讲述的是冷水澡的好处。故选C。
D
In the U.S., people eat more protein than they need to, which might not be bad for human health, but does pose a problem for the country’s waterways. The nation’s wastewater is loaded with the leftovers from protein digestion: nitrogen compounds (氮化合物) that can feed harmful algal blooms (藻华) and pollute the air and drinking water.
Maya Almaraz, a biogeochemist at the University of California, Davis, and her team wanted to see how much of this nitrogen entered into the U.S. wastewater system because of a protein-heavy diet. The researchers found that the majority of nitrogen pollution present in wastewater—some 67 to 100 percent—is a by-product of what people consume.
Once it enters the environment, the nitrogen can have a series of ecological impacts. It helps algae grow much faster than they would normally, which is harmful to humans, other animals and plants. And when the algae eventually die, the problem is not over. Microorganisms (微生物) that feed on dead algae use up oxygen in the water, leading to “dead zones”, where many species simply cannot survive, in rivers, lakes and oceans.
Although it is possible to treat algal blooms, many of the current methods are not always effective at getting rid of all of the harmful growth. Some of these methods can even lead to additional pollution. So the best strategy for dealing with the effects of nitrogen pollution is prevention, says Patricia Glibert, an ocean scientist at the University of Maryland. Almaraz and her team state that controlling nitrogen pollution could be approached more quickly with a change in eating habits that could save billions of dollars in the long term.
12. Which aspect of Americans’ diet does Almaraz’s research focus on
A. Its popularity. B. Its amount. C. Its effect. D. Its make-up.
13. What causes “dead zones” in the water
A. No oxygen for many species. B. Death of lots of healthy algae.
C. Microorganisms’ over-consumption of nutrients. D. Poisonous chemicals released by harmful algae.
14. What can we learn about the current treatments for algal blooms
A. They are costly. B. They are slow to take effect.
C. They may kill all algae. D. They may cause secondary pollution.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Why the Algae Grow So Rapidly B. How to Solve the Problem of Wastewater
C. How to Prevent the Air and Water Pollution D. Why Eating Too Much Protein Harms the Planet
C 13. A 14. D 15. D

根据第一段中“The nation’s wastewater is loaded with the leftovers from protein digestion: nitrogen compounds (氮化合物) that can feed harmful algal blooms (藻华) and pollute the air and drinking water.(这个国家的废水中充满了蛋白质消化的残余物:氮化合物会滋生有害的藻类,污染空气和饮用水)”以及第二段中“Maya Almaraz, a biogeochemist at the University of California, Davis, and her team wanted to see how much of this nitrogen entered into the U.S. wastewater system because of a protein-heavy diet.(加州大学戴维斯分校的生物地球化学家玛雅·阿尔马拉兹和她的团队想知道,由于蛋白质含量高的饮食,有多少氮进入了美国的废水系统)”可知,加州大学戴维斯分校的生物地球化学家玛雅·阿尔玛拉兹和她的团队研究关注的是美国人饮食由于蛋白质含量高,美国的水道中含有蛋白质消化的残余物:氮化合物,该物质对生物、空气和饮用水等造成了影响,故阿尔玛拉兹研究关注的是美国人饮食造成的影响。
根据第三段中“Microorganisms (微生物) that feed on dead algae use up oxygen in the water, leading to “dead zones”, where many species simply cannot survive, in rivers, lakes and oceans.(以死藻为食的微生物耗尽了水中的氧气,导致河流、湖泊和海洋中的“死区”,许多物种根本无法在那里生存)”可知,以死藻为食的微生物耗尽了水中的氧气,许多物种没有了氧气,导致了“死区”的出现。故选A。
根据第四段中“Some of these methods can even lead to additional pollution.(其中一些方法甚至会导致额外的污染)”可知,当前的一些处理方法容易造成额外污染即二次污染。
根据第一段中“The nation’s wastewater is loaded with the leftovers from protein digestion: nitrogen compounds (氮化合物) that can feed harmful algal blooms (藻华) and pollute the air and drinking water.(这个国家的废水中充满了蛋白质消化的残余物:氮化合物会滋生有害的藻类,污染空气和饮用水)”以及文章介绍了美国人吃过多蛋白质会导致氮污染,并且这种污染会促进有害藻类的生长,最终对环境造成负面影响。

由下文“Remember that your CV is only a way of getting your foot in the door, so keep it short. Most successful CVs include the following sections: profile (简介), achievements, experience, special skills (languages/ computers), education, training, and interests. Use no more than two sides of A4 paper. (记住,你的简历只是一种入门的方式,所以要简短。大多数成功的CV包括以下部分:简介(简介), 成就、经验、特殊技能(语言/计算机)、教育、培训和兴趣。使用的A4纸不得超过两面。)”可知,本段主要讲简历要简短。而A项Be brief (简明扼要)符合语境,对本段有总括总用,适合为本段小标题。故选A项。
由下文“Start with the most recent job first. If you have been out of work for a time, give reasons, but don’t talk too much about jobs you did more than 10 years ago. (先从最近的工作开始。如果你已经失业一段时间了,请说明原因,但不要过多谈论10多年前的工作。)”可知,这里主要讲怎样写工作历史。所以C项Give information about your work history in order.
由上文“Although you want to present yourself well, don’t bend the truth. (尽管你想很好地展现自己,但不要歪曲事实。)”可知,这里主要讲简历中不应该说谎,而E项Otherwise, you are likely to be caught out and have your application rejected.
由上文“Take the time to adapt your CV for each job you apply for. Research the company and use the job advertisement to decide what they are looking for. (花点时间根据你申请的每一份工作调整你的简历。对公司进行调查,并利用招聘广告来决定他们要找什么。)”可知,这里主要讲简历内容应符合公司要求,而D项Link your skills and experience to the requirements of each job. 符合语境,其中the requirements of each job与上文what they are looking for对应,有承上作用。故选D项。
由上文“Use this to stress information from your CV that is most related to the job you are applying for. (用这个来强调简历中与你申请的工作最相关的信息。)”可知,这里主要讲发简历时最好还要附上附信。而F项It isn’t good practice to send your CV to an employer on its own without this.

The Most Precious Gift
In the sixth grade, our teacher assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. The purpose of this assignment was to do nice things for your friend without letting them know who was doing it. We could leave encouraging notes on their desk or mysteriously leave a card in their backpack or book. Our teacher wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a bucket, then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of the classmate who we were to secretly make friends with and support over the next five school days.
However, by the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. Instead of encouraging notes, we left stationery sets (文具) on our friend’s desk. Instead of giving compliments, we were giving snacks, candies and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friends, except me.
My friend followed our teacher’s directions without a fault. I received handmade cards, notes with nice thoughts and countless smiley-face pictures claiming that I was one of the nicest girls in the class. My friend seemed to think highly of me from the notes that were left, but the lack of gifts made me wonder what was up with whoever had pulled my name.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed that there was a package on my desk. I eagerly unwrapped it and stared down at my desk. There sat a hand-made rabbit, wearing blue dark clothes with messy ears. Beside it was a note, saying “Your favorite rabbit. Hope you will like it.” The girls sitting near me made fun of the “odd and ugly” gift I had received and laughed at me. I felt my face turn red, angrily threw it into the desk and dashed out of the classroom. The moment I was out, someone called my name. She was Mary, a girl who was shy and always sat at the corner of the classroom.

“I’m your secret friend,” she wept. “I’m terribly sorry about the gift,” she whispered to me, sobbing with her face hidden in her hands. Frustrated and somewhat grieved, she explained that she couldn’t afford a fancy present, so she decided to make one herself. She stayed up all night last night to finish the hand-made rabbit, so that she could give it to me on the last day of assignment.
Knowing that she had stayed up late to make the rabbit, I was ashamed. Regretful and kind of embarrassed, I was sick to my stomach as my actions ran through my mind. I felt my throat was tightened as if a rock were stuck in it because I ruined everything she specially prepared for me. I regretted my actions and kept apologizing to her. Along with my apologies, I explained the reason. Actually I didn’t dislike the present that she gave me, I just felt a bit embarrassed when I received it with many classmates watching me and discussing my gift. Relieved and delighted, she flashed a smile to me, looking me in the eyes and comforted me that she understood my difficult situations because she had been trying to fit in, too. “We share something in common, don’t we ” she said, with a broad smile spreading over her face. Her simple words, spoken from her heart, found their way straight into mine. Touched immensely, I felt warmth flowing through me. That day, I gained a real “secret friend” and also learned to cherish real friendship.
