My name is Lainey. My school, West Elementary School, is located in Alabama, USA. A few months ago, a book vending machine appeared on our campus. The machine is filled with new books. We only need one token (代币) to get a book from it. And we can keep the book for ourselves.

This is the story of Joe and Fonzie. It’s a story about a friendship that started more than 20 years ago. It’s also a story about a friendship that saved a life and started a new kind of help for people with problems.
“Joe” is Joe Hoagland, who was three years old when the story began. And “Fonzie” is a 3-metre-long, 275-kilogram dolphin (海豚).
When Joe was born, he had a problem with his heart and doctors had to operate on him. When he was three, he had another operation. Soon, Joe wanted to see Fonzie every day. He loved playing with him and feeding him. Every time that Joe arrived, Fonzie came to see him. Joe’s mother told him always to feed Fonzie using his left hand, so Joe used his left side more and more. Slowly, he got better and better. He’s now over 30 years old and very well.
Deena saw that Joe’s friendship with Fonzie helped him a lot, and she knew it was a good idea for other people, too. So, she and her family worked to open a place called Island Dolphin Care. It’s next to Dolphin Plus and many people with health problems come to spend time with the dolphins.

①The World Kindness Day falls on 13th November, which encourages people to be kind to others. It is started by a Japanese university teacher called Seiji Kaya. One morning, he was waiting for his train when someone in the crowd stole his bag. He shouted for help, but unfortunately, no one stopped to help him or tried to stop the thief. Even no one asked him how he was, which upset him a lot. He thought he must do something. He shared his story with his students and encouraged them to “be brave and to practise small acts of kindness each day”. That is how the Japan Small Kindness Movement began. Gradually, it spread to other countries and November 13th became the official World Kindness Day in 1998.
