Reading English Beyond the Classroom
In order to figure out the reasons why students read fewer English books, newspapers and magazines, our school carried out a survey.
According to the survey, for lack of vocabulary knowledge, some students show less interest in reading. What’s more, faced with great learning pressure, some students can’t spare enough time on classics and newspapers.
In my opinion, students should choose reading materials that are fit for their reading levels with the help of teachers. Besides, it is also necessary for the school to offer reading classes to ensure that students have enough time to read.

One possible version:
Night fell, it became colder and colder. The cold moonlight cast a pale glow over the sea. The icy sea spray crept down his neck and a chilly wind swept his body. Steven Lippoth couldn’t help shivering. Being an experienced fisherman, he knew he should try to use anything that he could to keep himself warm. He wrapped himself with the torn canvas, crouching in the corner to avoid the wind. Some terrible thoughts once flashed through his mind, but looking at the fish he had harvested, he felt a sense of comfort. “It is only one night, and the coast guard will find me sooner or later.” Steven Lippoth murmured and fell asleep.
The next morning, the sound of a coastguard ship woke him up. Steven Lippoth sprang to his feet and waved his hands wildly at the ship, calling out with all his strength with his voice trembling. A few minutes later, the guard arrived and pulled him to the board with great care. It was at this moment that Steven Lippoth burst into tears. He repeatedly expressed his deepest gratitude to the coast guard. The guards were shocked to find Steven safe and sound considering how terrible the storm was yesterday. Only Steven Lippoth knew it was his sensible action and positive attitude that saved him.

Text 10
W: We won’t know what the future house will look like, but we can imagine three kinds of houses. The first one is the tree house. Like a leaf, the surface of the house collects sunlight during the day. The energy can be used to heat water, produce electricity and even create fresh air for the home. The root of the house is deep under the ground. It uses the soil to control the home’s temperature. The second one is the lizard home. Like a lizard, changing colors with the weather is the most important design of a lizard house. When it’s in the bright sun, the cover of the house will turn dark to protect it from strong heat. During the dark days, it turns white and takes in as much light and heat as possible to produce energy. The last one is the chimney house. In such a house, a chimney can be a useful air conditioner because it is easier for hot air to flow out of the chimney.驻马店市2023~2024 学年度第一学期期终考试

Rolland and Adeline are proud parents of nine children. Their youngest two, daughter Lanto and son Rindra, were both born with cleft conditions(唇腭裂). In Madagascar, many families have never seen a cleft, so it's a condition often greeted with fear in some rural communities
However, the fact of Lanto and Rindra's cleft wasn't much of a shock because Rolland' s cousin had lived his entire life with an untreated cleft. The book Yes Means Yes, Everything Else Means No, explores the great philosophy( 哲
学)of simplicity and decision-making. Authored by an experienced decision maker, this book goes beyond self—help clichés (陈词滥调) and offers a true, actionable way to guide life choices.
At the center of human being lies the continuous process of decision—making. From the ordinary to the life—changing, our choices decide our paths. The book recognizes this basic aspect of our lives and stresses the key role decision—making plays in shaping our present and future.
The title, Yes Means Yes, Everything Else Means No, expresses a great principle. In a world where indecisiveness often leads to confusion and missed opportunities, the book's philosophy tells between a loud "Yes" and a clear "No". In nature, this title invites readers to grasp the power of this belief and the art of exact choices. The book advises us to put our energies into “Yes” and stop weakening our efforts with uncertain promises.
Simplicity in decision-making stresses clearness and effectiveness while making choices. When faced with difficult decisions, people often spend too much time processing data, but with no result. By accepting simplicity, decision-makers get the important information, focus on the most related points and avoid unnecessary troubles, enabling quicker judgments and conclusions.
Author Bruce Mulle's journey began with a lesson passed by his brother. In nature, Yes Means Yes, Everything Else Means No is more than just a theoretical(理论的)exploration of simplicity; it's a practical guide to improve decision-making skills. The author doesn't only deliver the philosophy but equips readers with the tools they need to perform it effectively. From techniques to methods, the book offers a useful tool for simplifying the decision- making process.

Steven Lippoth was an experienced fisherman who had been fishing on the sea for many years. He had planned on taking an 8—hour deep—sea fishing, which would(hopefully) harvest marlins and sailfish to land him a large amount of money. In his fishing village, the competition was high and Steven Lippoth was hoping to bring back enough fish.
Early in the morning, Steven Lippoth set out on a 24—foot boat with a small motor. Onboard were various fishing tools, a portable electronic radio, and a large icebox to hold the fish. The journey seemed like it would be as easy as he had hoped. Before long he had caught over 500 pounds of fish, almost overloading his icebox.
However, A few hours later, the journey took a turn for the worse. The sky was suddenly covered with dark clouds and in less than two minutes a terrible storm struck. A huge wave shook his boat violently. Steven Lippoth attempted to steer (驾驶) the boat back toward the coast, but it was impossible to see where the coast was in the rain. Frightened and shocked, he tried to keep the balance of the boat in order not to be overturned and thrown into the sea. When the storm finally cleared, Steven Lippoth was able to assess the damage. His motor was gone, the fishing net was damaged, and most of the portable electronics were damaged. There was enough power in the radio for Steven Lippoth to send a Mayday message to the coast guard, but it died before his location could be confirmed. The canvas (帆布)that
was used to cover the icebox was torn. What made him a little relieved was that his fish were still there
Would the coast guard find him What would happen if he had to spend the night on the sea What should he do He wondered. “I'm on my own now. ”Steven Lippoth said to himself calmly.
