Looking back, Geoff Banks of Devon, England can hardly even remember how he first started writing to his American friend, Celesta Byrne.
Geoff and Celesta were given each other’s names and addresses as part of a school pen pal program back in 1938. They’re both now 100 years old, and a lot has changed in the past 84 years: their age changed ;their appearance changed; but one thing has not—they still use the traditional way to contact.
“I honestly struggle to remember something, but I was talking to Celesta recently and I think it was something to do with an American school’s scheme,” Geoff said,” They matched us up with Americans for a pen pal relationship, and somehow I ended up with this letter from an American girl, and we’ve just kept corresponding(通信)ever since.”
Geoff and Celesta’s relationship never turned romantic, but they shared a lot over the decades. They kept up their correspondence through World War II, sending updates about their families, friends, and work. In 2002, they finally got a chance to meet in person during a trip to New York City. Two years later, they met up again, but ever since then they’ve gone back to pen and paper.
Recently, they’ve switched to digital forms of communication to stay in touch. Their children have helped them set up email accounts. “I’ve known this new thing called Zoom, I think, now to chat with her, but I leave all the technology to younger people. Deep down, I refuse to use Zoom. Writing to Celesta has been a source of great satisfaction for me over the years,” said Geoff.
Celesta says their relationship is “like people who live next door”. “You know how they’re doing, you say a few words, and then you both go to work,” she explained. “She’s always been there to write to, even if it was just birthday cards and Christmas cards.” Geoff added.

Electric bicycles have come and they’re clearly here to stay. Nearly every single country in the world has begun embracing two-wheeled electric mobility, recognizing the benefits hitting the road on e-bikes has, not just for the economy, but for the population’s general wellbeing, as well.
Germany, in particular, has witnessed are mark able upturn in the e-bike industry, displaying no signs of slowing down despite initial hesitations earlier this year. In May, favorable weather made it more convenient to ride e-bikes, which contributed to the increase of e-bike sales. By the end of May this year, Germany had produced over one million electric bikes, marking a significant five-percent growth compared to the same period last year. This growth is particularly impressive considering the challenging economic climate the country has faced.
Burkhard Stock, the Managing Director of the Zweirad-Industrie-Verband(ZIV), discussed this unbelievable turn of events in a report published by German e-bike publication E-Bike News. He mentioned that they had anticipated a slowdown in the market throughout the first half of the year. However, it turned out that a positive change in the industry was seen in May.
In addition to the market within the country, German-made electric bicycles have gone to other parts of the world. In the first quarter of this year, an astonishing 190,000 electric bikes were sold abroad, meaning a significant 28-percent increase compared to the previous year. A majority of these electric bikes were transported to European Union and European Free Trade Association member countries. Before 2023 draws to a close, it’s expected that the German e-bike market will produce two-million electric bicycles.
Some of the major factors driving sales in the e-bike market are the innovative features of the products, fully integrated batteries and drives, appealing designs, and the use of high-quality materials. The e-bike companies are launching new models with advanced technologies and high-tech features such as long battery ranges, which are attracting customers. Moreover, the preference of consumers for a carbon-free and healthier ride along with fuel saving is contributing to the higher adoption rate of e-bikes.

In a groundbreaking effort, scientists at the University of Rochester have successfully transferred a longevity gene from naked mole rats(裸盼鼠)to mice, leading to enhanced health and a longer lifespan for the mice.
Unlike many other species, the rats do not often develop diseases —including cancer—as they age. Vera Gorbunova, the Doris Johns Cherry Professor of bi ology and medicine at Rochester, along with Andrei Seluanov, a professor of biology, and their colleagues have devoted decades of research to understanding the unique mechanisms(机制)that the naked mole rats use to protect themselves against aging and diseases. The researchers discovered that HMW-HA is one mechanism responsible for the rats’ unusual resistance to pared to mice and humans, naked mole rats have about ten times more HMW-HA in their bodies. When the researchers removed HMW-HA from the rat cells, the cells were more likely to form tumors(肿瘤).
“Our study provides a proof of principle that unique longevity mechanisms that evolved in long-lived mammals can be exported to improve the lifespans of other mammals,” says Gorbunova. As they successfully transferred a gene responsible for making HMW-HA from a naked mole rat to mice, leading to improved health and an approximate 4.4 percent increase in the lifespan for the mice, the Rochester researchers have opened exciting possibilities for unlocking the secrets of aging and extending human lifespan. “It took us 10 years from the discovery of HMW-HA in the naked mole rat to showing that HMW-HA improves health in mice,” Gorbunova says. “Our next goal is to transfer this benefit to humans.”
They believe they can accomplish this through two routes: either by slowing down the degradation(衰退)of HMW-HA or by enhancing HMW-HA synthesis(合成). “We hope that our findings will provide the first, but not the last, example of how longevity adaptations from a long-lived species can be adapted to benefit human longevity and health.” Seluanov says.
32. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The beneficial effects of HMW-HA on humans.
B. The process of transferring genes producing HMW-HA.
C. The comparison between mice and humans in longevity.
D. The discovery of a unique mechanism for cancer resistance.
33. What can we learn about the researchers
A. They have unlocked the secrets of human longevity.
B. They plan to introduce longevity genes into humans.
C. They have spent 10 years trying to discover HMW-HA.
D. They believe that the longevity genes can be exported to any mammals.
34. What does Seluanov think of the prospect of extending human lifespan
A. Hopeful. B. Worrying. C. Doubtful. D. Uncertain.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Promise Shown in Control of Human Genes
B. Scientists Successfully Transfer Longevity Gene
C. Achievement Made in Extending Human Lifespan
D. New Breakthrough Paves the Way for Curing Cancer

We’ve all been there—you’ve sent a message and it’s marked “read”, but you haven’t heard anything back. What’s the deal While being left on read(已读不回)can be confusing, it’s also pretty common. 36 Here are a few tips.
Expect the best. Remind yourself that the person is probably just busy. Ask yourself if you actually know their schedule. There could be some time commitments you aren’t aware of. Here are a few other reasons for a delayed response. 37 They put their phone away to focus on work or school. They accidentally forgot to reply. Maybe they thought about what they wanted to say but didn’t actually text it.
Resist the temptation(诱惑)to double-text. 38 If you send a lot of follow-up texts, it’ll be hard for them to keep up and they might get stressed. Leave them with just one text to catch up on—the other person will probably appreciate your patience.
Read over your previous messages. See if there are any confusing texts that you need to clarify. It’s okay if you review your message again and notice that it might have been a little unclear—it happens! 39
40 Keep it out of sight and get some peace of mind. Don’t let it upset or confuse you. If you get your mind off any notifications, you’ll be able to brainstorm new ways to spend your time.
A. Put your phone away.
B. Fix your attention closely on text responses.
C. Give them a little space so they have a chance to reply.
D. They want to give you a longer response but can’t right now.

A Four-legged Guardian Angel
Snow had just melted off the ground that April day at our house in Regina Beach, Saskatchewan. I had just cleaned up the pool in preparation for selling the house. The year before, I had lost my job with the provincial government, and now our financial situation was severe. In despair, I had finally put the home on the market, and a real estate agent(房产经纪人)was due to show up later that day. Even worse, I would have to give up my beloved Great Dane(大丹犬), Brigitte, because I could no longer afford the cost of feeding it. The thought of losing the dog and our beautiful home was almost more than I could bear.
Deep in despair, I sat typing up resumes and cover letters(求职信). Out of the corner of my eye, I could see my thirteen-month-old son, Forrest, as he lay on the carpet, playing near our big gentle nanny-dog Brigitte. It seemed as if Brigitte was always meant to be in this family and she turned out to be a perfect companion.
Brigitte came to our house on Christmas eve when the doorbell rang and I was sure some of my Christmas packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful Great Dane sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there Perhaps, someone had found the puppy somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed I would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
Thinking of these, I couldn’t help heaving a sigh and went straight back to work. However, I hadn’t typed more than two sentences when Brigitte began barking loudly and running back and forth to the sliding glass door overlooking our pool.
I raced to see what was happening and noticed that the sliding door was slightly open. Suddenly, I realized Forrest was nowhere to be seen. In panic, I opened the door and ran outside.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
There I was surprised to see Brigitte, who was terrified of water, div e into the pool. Finally, the doctor said Forrest was all right and could be released from hospital.

参考范文:
There I was surprised to see Brigitte, who was terrified of water, dive into the pool. Breathless and astonished, I watched Brigitte gather up her courage to swim towards my son, who was struggling desperately in the icy water. Almost meanwhile, I sprang into action. With every powerful stroke, I got close to where Forrest was floating. Fortunately, Forrest was about to sink when I grabbed his hair and dragged him to the shallow end of the pool, with Brigitte paddling alongside, her eyes full of obvious concern. The moment I got him out, our beloved dog bounced around him, constantly licking his pale face as if to warm him. Voice trembling, I called 911 and soon we were rushed to the nearest hospital. Every second counted!
Finally, the doctor said Forrest was all right and could be released from hospital. After this, I heaved a sigh of relief. On arrival home, our dog Brigitte leaped high up to give us warm and wet kisses, wagging her tail cheerfully. Looking directly into her eyes with gratefulness and a bit of guilty, I scooped her up and held her close to my chest, unwilling to let her go for a single minute. It was then that I suddenly became aware that life sometimes could be cruel and miserable, but there was always someone or something guiding you, protecting you and accompanying you with love and loyalty. Our dog was just our guardian angel, shattering my despair about losing our home and guiding us out of trouble. How could I leave her

文章主要介绍了当别人阅读你的信息后,不回复你时,要学会心平气和的面对,不要让社交软件影响到你的生活。
36. F. 根据后文“Here are a few tips.(这里有一些建议)”以及前文“it’s also pretty common.(这种情况很常见”可知,空处应该是承上启下说明可以应用这些建议避免被影响,所以F项“You can keep the situation from bothering you until you hear back.(你可以避免这种情况困扰你)”符合文意。故选F项。
37. D. 根据上句 Here are a few other reasons for a delayed response 以及后文“They put their phone away to focus on work or school. They accidentally forgot to reply. Maybe they thought about what they wanted to say but didn’t actually text it.上句是在讲一些人们延迟回复的可能,所以此处填:“他们想给你一个更长的回复,但现在不行”。与下文“他们把手机放在一边,专注于工作或学习。他们不小心忘了回复。也许他们想了想要说什么,但并没有真的发出去”符合,所以D项“They want to give you a longer response but can’t right now.”符合文意。故选D项。
38. C. 根据前文“Resist the temptation to double- text.(不要信息轰炸对方)”以及后文“If you send a lot of follow- up texts, it’ll be hard for them to keep up and they might get stressed. Leave them with just one text to catch up on—the other person will probably appreciate your patience.(如果你发了很多后续短信,他们很难跟上,他们可能会感到压力。只给他们留一条信息,让他们跟上进度——对方可能会感激你的耐心)”可知,本段讲述不要一直给对方发信息,要给对方一些时间,让他们跟上你的信息,所以C项“Give them a little space so they have a chance to reply.(给他们一点空间,让他们有机会回答)”符合文意。故选C项。
39. G.根据段首句“阅读你之前的信息”,及上文“See if there are any confusing texts that you need to clarify. It’s okay if you review your message again and notice that it might have been a little unclear—it happens! (看看是否有什么令人困惑的文本需要澄清。如果你再次查看你的信息,并注意到它可能有点不清楚,这是没有关系的——这种情况发生了!)可知,尾句You might feel relieved when you find something that is easy to misread.(可能会感到宽慰,当你发现了一些容易被误读的东西)”符合文意。故选G项。
40. A. 本题考查段首句,根据下句 Keep it out of sight and get some peace of mind.(把它放在你看不到的地方,让你的内心平静下来)”以及后文“Don’t let it upset or confuse you. If you get your mind off any notifications, you’ll be able to brainstorm new ways to spend your time.(不要让它困扰或迷惑你。 故选A项。
