When planning team building events of any sort, corporate hospitality can be a critical component. Corporate hospitality can be as simple as a company day out or as lavish as private entertainments. Corporate hospitality is a critical aspect of team building, allowing bonding, socialization, and a feeling of unity as team members work together toward a common goal. Corporate hospitality, whether in the form of tickets to a sporting event or concert or larger group activities can be a positive bonus for employees and a morale booster in the workplace.
Corporate hospitality is also a fine choice for PR events, product launches and more. Introducing new concepts, plans and products at a corporate hospitality event like a sporting event, concert, outdoor gathering or other team building event can be a memorable and welcoming choice. Creating a positive environment for training courses and seminars will help your clients or employees to remember the material and integrate it into their professional lives in a positive and beneficial way.
Even serious corporate meetings and seminars can benefit from corporate hospitality and team building activities. Integrating a game night, themed activities or treasure hunt into your training courses, seminars, or general annual meetings can help cement the professional bonds between colleagues and clients. These team building events can even help teach cooperative work skills. Corporate hospitality and team building activities can make your seminars or events more than just educational opportunities for professional networking, but also events that leave both clients and employees with a positive impression of the conference or event.

Read the passage about corporate hospitality and answer the following questions.
(1) What is Corporate Hospitality
(2) Why was the sports business not considered much of a corporate event a few decades ago
(3) What boosted the rise of the sports business in corporate events
(4) What tightened the growth of corporate sports events again
(5) Which kind of sports would you choose if you were to plan a corporate event Why
How Corporate Hospitality Took over the Sports Business
A decade ago entertaining a client could have involved a football season ticket and a parking pass, perhaps even a few beers. But the corporate event industry has undergone a massive transformation. Demand for hospitality services throughout Britain is higher and more sophisticated than ever.
Sports clubs and event management companies have come together to offer some of the most exclusive and premium corporate experiences imaginable. Corporate access to the sports and entertainment industry has proven to be a valuable commodity that has surpassed all expectations.
The sports industry in the UK is worth nearly 20 billion a year. The industry supports nearly 450,000 jobs. It’s big business which is why it’s ironic that a few decades ago business and sports would rarely be mentioned in the same breath. For a start, external funding was limited, stadiums were old and the crowd was unmanageable. Football and rugby stadiums were probably never on a list of venues for a corporate event. In fact, the stadiums were so unsafe due to hooliganism that only the most passionate football fans would consider going. Something like the corporate sports packages now on offer would have been unimaginable.
The rise of corporate sponsors and the demand for corporate hospitality may have helped the sports industry grow and diversify. Small and mediumsized businesses began hosting events to retain staff, attract clients, and establish their brands. Informal settings at sports events were better suited to networking than formal roundtable dinners. Events have taken on a business objective and the trend is spreading across the world.
In Silicon Valley, for example, startup funds like Rothenberg Ventures host informal parties (think wine tours and free tickets for baseball matches) throughout the year to help entrepreneurs and investors meet and strike deals. Meanwhile, Twickenham rugby hospitality packages include a chance to meet some of the celebrities of the game.
Growth in corporate hospitality was relentless until the 2008 recession. As businesses across the world tightened their purse strings, the corporate hospitality market took a beating. According to research group Key Note, the size of the industry fell 2.5% to 1.2 billion over the course of four years since the financial meltdown.
The Bribery Act in 2011 tightened the noose around corporate sports events. The new regulations made it harder for businesses to organize events or accept invites. The Act recognizes the need for hospitality while doing business but sets limitations and conditions on what’s acceptable as legitimate business expenses. As a result, businesses need to be more careful with hospitality spending.
But slowly and steadily the industry seems to be regaining its footing. Corporate hospitality is bigger and better regulated than ever before. It’s now an integral part of the sports industry.

(Subjunctive Mood in Clauses of Condition)
If I were you, I would accept the offer.
If they had money, they would buy the house.
If it snowed tomorrow, our trip would be canceled.
If the manager should come tomorrow, we could have a staff meeting.
If I had known that you were coming, I would have picked you up at the bus station.
I wouldn’t have served the seafood if I had been told he was allergic.
If you had followed the doctor’s advice then, you would be all right now.
If you hadn’t fi nished your homework yesterday, you would pick it up tomorrow.
We might have died without your help.
But for your suggestion, we would have failed.
I would have invited you to dinner, but I didn’t know how to contact you.
We would have helped you, but we were so busy then.

After learning this passage, you may have got more ideas about corporate hospitality. Now, work in pairs. Suppose you’re the PR Manager and would like to organize a corporate hospitality sports event. Discuss with your partner how to organize the event successfully.
After-dinner Speakers Add Value to Any Event
Whether you are planning a corporate dinner or charity banquet, you want the guests to leave having a deep impression of the evening. These events often serve an even larger purpose and that is to give or cause exposure and build brand recognition for your company. By hiring some renowned after-dinner speakers such as sports stars Barrie McDermott, Robbie Glen, Steve Daley, Steve Kindon or Terry O’ Conner you can add the extra punch to the evening and a little bit of press.
Great after-dinner speakers are experienced professionals with some renown such as the famous Dr. Kevin Jones. He is a consultant physician and would be great speaking to a mixed audience with a non-serious look at medicine and with a hilarious line in hospital humour. David Gunson would be a good choice for humorous and smooth narration of his experiences in the job as an air traffic controller. These men are motivational and relevant to the movements happening all over the world today. People look up to people who have been in the spotlight or have great reputations in their fields. The bigger the fish the greater the impact and the more impressed the guests will be.
Most management companies have several big names on their rosters and it might just be a great idea to team up with one of these companies before your next big event. If you are planning an annual business dinner, then you would do well to hire a speaker from the business sector. Someone who is extremely successful and who will share his/her experience with your audience with humor and insight.
This is not the after-dinner speaker you would necessarily hire for an employee training program. For this you would look for someone who is a motivator and knows about the value of teamwork. Someone who can be humorous and yet get the message across is a good bet for this type of event.
Charity events are a sure bet for any of these events. They can guarantee some media coverage and the events will see record attendance. Having a famous name attached to an event will bring out the star gazers and this will ensure that the charity brings in more money.
The benefits of adding after-dinner speakers to the event program are so numerous that the cost is certainly justified. It will cost you a lot if you hire after-dinner speakers who make four figures or better per engagement. The rates start as low as 500 and can get as high as 100,000 or more.
When hiring an after-dinner speaker you want to go with a veteran speaker, one who has been tested and has a solid reputation for being able to hold an audience. It is also best to work closely with the speakers so that they are sure to incorporate information that is important to you in their speeches. Even though your guests will have dined on a scrumptious meal and maybe had a drink or two they will still need to be entertained. They came to your event with high expectations, and the after-dinner speakers will ensure that they get what they came for.
Fill out the following table about after-dinner speakers.
