Over the past three decades, an 81-year-old Chinese man has been operating a small zoo. The zoo in Enshi, Hubei Province, is called the “world’s loneliest zoo” because few people visit it. Most of the animals there are unhealthy.
Luo Yingjiu began keeping animals at home in the 1980s. After seeing wild animals kept in cages for sale at a market, Luo bought them and took them home to give them medical treatment. He released (释放) those able to live on their own into the wild and continued to raise those that could not live independently. There were so many animals in his house that the local government suggested he open a zoo. With the government’s financial aid, the zoo was opened in 1989, the only one in the city at that time. During its peak time, the zoo had some big animals, including a tiger and a lion. The business later became worse because visitors were not interested in the zoo’s “old, weak, sick and disabled” animals.
Using his pension (退休金) to operate the zoo, Mr. Luo refused to listen to other people’s advice to close it. “It is not just a zoo; it provides the habitat for the animals,” he explained. “If the zoo is closed, where can these animals go They cannot even survive in the wild.”
As he operates the zoo, he keeps on rescuing animals. A black bear with one paw injured was saved 17 years ago. A dog named Dianzi was saved when its former owner planned to abandon (遗弃) it. A monkey that has been at the zoo for nearly 30 years is almost blind because of camera flashes from visitors who took photos. For those animals that died, Luo buried them on the nearby mountain.
Luo said he remembers every animal’s name. “Animals and humans are born equal,”he said. “We should respect their right to survive.”
24. Why is the zoo called the “world’s loneliest zoo”

D. By picking up dying animals in the wild.

A. Visitors took no interest in the unhealthy animals.
B. Local government refused to offer financial support.
C. He used up all of his pension so that the zoo was closed.
D. Children were frightened by the wild tiger and lion.
27. Which of the following best describes Luo Yingjiu

The Hadza hunter-gatherers of Tanzania live a life that has not changed much over ten thousand years. They have no crops, no house animals, no permanent shelters. In spite of long exposure to agriculturalist groups around them, the Hadza have maintained their lifestyle.
The story of the spread of agriculture is the story of growing population density (密度). Villages formed, then cities, then nations. Agriculture’s rise, however, came with a price. It introduced infectious diseases, social inequality, occasional famines (饥荒) and war. Professor Jared Diamond of UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) has called the adoption of agriculture “the worst mistake in human history”— a mistake from which we have never recovered.
Looking at the Hadza, you can see why he came to this conclusion. They do not engage in warfare. They do not live densely (稠密地) enough to be threatened by an infectious outbreak. They have no known history of famine (饥荒). The Hadza diet is more stable (稳定 的) and varied than that of most of the world’s citizens. They live almost entirely free of possessions. They enjoy an extraordinary amount of leisure time, “working” — actively pursuing food — only four to six hours a day.
The chief reason the Hadza have been able to maintain their lifestyle so long is that their homeland is not an inviting place. Recently, however, population growth has brought a flood of people into Hadza lands. The region has generally been viewed by outsiders as unused, a Place in need of development. The Hadza, who by nature are not a combative (好战的) people, have almost always moved away instead of fighting.
There are many things to envy about the Hadza, mostly what free spirits they appear to be. Free from schedules, jobs, bosses, bills, traffic, taxes, laws, social duties and money. But who of us could live like them It’s incredibly risky. Medical help is far away. One bad fall from a tree, one bite from a snake, and you’re dead. The fact is that it’s too late for us to go back to the Hadza lifestyle. Of greater concern is that soon it may be impossible for them to maintain theirs.
28. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Agriculture’s rise. B. The growth of population.
C. The formation of village. D. The appearance of a city.
29. What’s the characteristic of the Hadza
A. They are always busy in all seasons
B. They like fighting with the other nations
C. They are often in hunger because of fight
D. They are always leading a free life without fight.
30. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. It’s convenient for the people of Hadza to get medical care.
B. It’s worth visiting the beautiful scenery of the Hadza.
C. Visitors can be welcomed warmly by the people of the Hadza.
D. The author is worried about the current situation of the Hadza.
31 Which is the best title for the text
A. Agriculture of the Hadza B. The Unique Hadza Lifestyle
C. The Attractive Diet of the Hadza D. The Medical Care of the Hadza
D
Imagine coming home after a long day at work and being welcomed by a loving pet who greets you warmly. Better yet, imagine a pet that never has to be fed and never has to use the bathroom.
Robopest provide many of the perks of a real pet without all of the responsibility. These furry (毛的) robofriends are more advanced and lifelike than remote-controlled toy dogs. Many feature realistic fur for an enjoyable petting experience and make sounds and small, natural movements.
Paro is one of the most popular companion robots. It is a robotic baby harp seal (鞍背海豹) with cute black eyes and a pacifier (安抚奶嘴) that doubles as its charger. Created by Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Paro is more than a stuffed animal. The little seal is packed with five kinds of sensors: touch, light, audio, temperature and posture. Plus, Paro is super intelligent; it can learn to behave in a way that the user prefers. According to the Paro website, “If you stroke (抚摸) it every time you touch it, Paro will remember your previous action and try to repeat that action to be stroked.”
While animal-assisted therapy (疗法) and the benefits of pets have been analysed in numerous scientific studies, real animals may not always be the appropriate choice for an older adult. Animals can be a lot of work; they can spread some diseases to humans and they may not always be on their best behaviour. That is where robotic pets come into play. In a study on Paro’s effect on hospital/nursing home residents, researchers found that those who interacted with Paro were less lonely over the period of the trial.
Robot pets are becoming a common fixture in assisted living communities and, as years go by, these robopets will become more advanced at copying real animal behaviours. While some believe that robot pets can’t compete with real animals, the companionship they provide to older adults cannot be denied.
32. What does the underlined word “perks” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Solutions. B. Challenges. C. Chances. D. Advantages.
33. How smart is Paro
A. It can work without electricity. B. It can touch its user.
C. It can repeat its user’s words. D. It can adapt its actions to its user.
34 What is paragraph 4 mainly intended to explain
A. What researchers have found about diseases.
B. Why robotic pets are suitable for people.
C. What dangers animals can bring to humans.
D. Why hospitals apply animal-assisted therapy.
35. What is the author’s attitude to the future of robot pets
A. Disapproving. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Unclear.

Miguel opened the door to his grandpa’s shoe shop. Grandpa was drawing a customer’s foot onto a piece of paper. He didn’t look up. Miguel sat down. He looked at the cut leather hammer (锤子) and pliers (钳子).
The tools reminded Miguel of something else he loved. Grandpa always gave him a piece of candy whenever Miguel helped clean up. Miguel knew he wasn’t supposed to take candy without asking. But he was hungry then. It looked like Grandpa would be busy for a while. “Maybe I don’t need to wait,” Miguel thought.
Miguel reached secretly for the candy box. He hurried and put it in his mouth. Pretty soon the customer left. Grandpa was busy picking up a piece of leather and putting it in some water. Miguel ate the rest of the candy as fast as he could. Then he walked over to Grandpa.
Grandpa looked up from his work. “Hello!” he said with a smile. Miguel hugged Grandpa. He hoped Grandpa couldn’t tell he’d eaten a piece of candy. “It looks like you’re busy today,” Miguel said. “Do you need any help ” “Sure! Could you pass me that thread (线) ” Miguel nodded. He pulled it between his hands. “Wow, that’s strong.” Miguel said. Grandpa laughed, “It has to be, to last through the wear and tear of life.” Grandpa pulled the thread through the leather.
“You know, we need to be more like this shoe,” Grandpa said. Miguel looked at the leather, “Um. We do ” “Yes, indeed. We need to stay strong. That way temptations (诱惑) won’t make us fall apart,” Grandpa said with a nod.
Miguel suddenly thought of the candy. He knew he should tell Grandpa about it. Grandpa took an old shoe off the shelf, “See this big hole ” Miguel nodded. “This was once a small hole that could have been fixed easily. But the owner waited, and now it’s going to be much harder to fix. Bad habits and bad choices are like that hole. It is best to fix them early.”
Paragraph 1:
They kept talking as Grandpa worked.

C. By finding animals released from other zoos.
D. By picking up dying animals in the wild.
26. What was the reason why Luo’s business went worse
A. Visitors took no interest in the unhealthy animals.

D. Children were frightened by the wild tiger and lion.

31. Which is the best title for the text
A. Agriculture of the Hadza B. The Unique Hadza Lifestyle
C. The Attractive Diet of the Hadza D. The Medical Care of the Hadza

34. What is paragraph 4 mainly intended to explain
A. What researchers have found about diseases.
B. Why robotic pets are suitable for people.
C. What dangers animals can bring to humans.
D. Why hospitals apply animal-assisted therapy.
35. What is the author’s attitude to the future of robot pets
A. Disapproving. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Unclear.
【答案】32. D 33. D 34. B 35. C

I like travelling and I have been to many places, and the trip to Sanya is really unforgettable for me.
I went to Sanya with my classmates last summer. It was a very exciting trip. When I got there I took off my shoes and put my feet into the water. The water was cool, and walking in the water was such a great joy that I didn’t want to stop. And then, I went to swim in the blue sea. It was very relaxing. After that, I played sand on the beach with my classmates. We made a sand castle and collected some beautiful shells. We also took a lot of pictures of it. At last, we travelled to an island by ship. It was really beautiful there.
It was an unforgettable trip and we all felt very happy and excited. This trip not only allowed me to relax and broaden my vision, but also enhanced the friendship between me and my classmates. I looked forward to going there again.

Miguel opened the door to his grandpa’s shoe shop. Grandpa was drawing a customer’s foot onto a piece of paper. He didn’t look up. Miguel sat down. He looked at the cut leather, hammer (锤子) and pliers (钳子).
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Miguel told him all about taking the candy. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
They kept talking as Grandpa worked. The whole time, Miguel kept thinking about the candy. When Grandpa finished, Miguel helped him clean up. Then Grandpa reached for his box of candy as usual. Finally, Miguel couldn’t take it anymore. “I took one piece of your candy without asking,” he said and hung his head in shame. Grandpa set down the box in surprise and wondered what had actually happened.
Miguel told him all about taking the candy. “I’m so sorry, Grandpa! I’ll never do it again. I promise!” Grandpa hugged Miguel and kissed him lovingly. Miguel felt so much better. “Thank you for being honest. That’s more important to me than just about anything else.” On the way home, Miguel felt just like one of Grandpa’s new pairs of shoes, strong and ready for life.
