Dan Scarfe, the boss of a new company that has found a way to unlock conversation for deaf people, says the idea hit him over Christmas with his family last year.
Scarfe’s grandfather was 97 years old with hearing problems, so he had great trouble communicating with others in the family. This inspired (激励) Scarfe to find a solution so that his grandfather could “talk” with others. “My grandfather either sits in silence or watches TV all the time with subtitles (字幕),” said Scarfe.
Now, just six months later, his company, with the help of Augmented Reality Classes, has invented XRAI Glasses.
The XRAI Glasses are connected to a mobile phone. Our software receives a sound from the microphone on these glasses and sends it down to the phone. Then the phone turns the sound into subtitles. Finally the deaf people can understand it.
“As a deaf person myself, I think it brings us much convenience,” said Steve Crump, Founder and Chair, DeafKidz International. “When I tried on the glasses, the real time subtitles make me join others in their “talk”. I have never done it before. It’s perfect”.
Though XRAI Glasses haves been considered by the Royal National Institute for Deaf People as a game changer with the ability to change lives, the invention is not without its disadvantages. It can’t understand group conversations well when many people talk together. Scarfe said, “we are doing research to make the glasses serve deaf people better. Hopefully, they are available (上市) by September”.
24. What inspired Dan Scarfe to invent the XRAI glasses
A. Hoping to change the world. B. Noticing his grandpa’s condition.
C. Seeing many deaf people around him. D. Believing it as a way to make money.
25. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 4
A. Where the XRAI Glasses are made. B. What the XRAI Glasses look like.
C. Why the XRAI glasses are popular. D. How the XRAI glasses work.
26. How did Steve Crump feel when trying on the XRAI glasses
A. Annoyed. B. Anxious. C. Satisfied. D. Disappointed.
27. What do we know about the XRAI glasses
A. The XRAI glasses still need improvements.
B. The XRAI glasses are available to customers.
C. The XRAI glasses deal with group talking well.
D. The XRAI glasses can only be tested by the elderly.
【答案】24. B 25. D 26. C 27. A

Winning an influential science award is a really big deal. Especially if you are only 12 years old. But Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher. Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones.
Thermo Fisher is the country’s premier STEM competition and reaches 65,000 middle schools from across the US. There are 30 finalists---from the nearly 5,000 applicants—that competed in the Washington DC awards ceremony.
Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroying a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022. “I had never really experienced something like that before,” she told Washington Post, about the early morning fire at Holder’s Country Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smoke detectors, and yet it still burned down,” she added. After she studied fire statistics and saw how common fires are, Shanya decided that she was going to do something about it.
She spent more than a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could have prevented the fire. That’s because traditional smoke detectors sense active fires from the smoke in the air. Shanya’s thermal imaging device (热成像设备) is designed to stop fires from occurring. Her complicated system has two parts, a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer. The device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning.
Creating the prototype (雏形) was difficult and the hardest part was the coding. “I had two designs and my first design completely failed. It was a really big barrier I had to go through,” she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants to bring the costs down to $60 to make it even more affordable than hardwired smoke detectors.
“Shanya saw a problem and she went after it and tried to solve it, and that’s what we need to encourage with all young people,” said Ajmera, “She has exhibited boundless curiosity.” Ajmera also said, “Her remarkable research not only reflects her talent but also paves the way for an exciting new future.”
28. Why are some figures listed in paragraph 2
A. To show the difficulty of winning at Thermo Fisher.
B. To emphasize the significance of the awards ceremony.
C. To provide statistics on the success rate of participants.
D To highlight the large number of applicants.
29. What inspired Shanya Gill to create her fire detection system
A. Her interest in coding.
B. Winning a science award.
C. Her personal experience with fire.
D. The need for a more affordable smoke detector.
30. How does Shanya’s thermal imaging device differ from traditional smoke detectors
A. It is cheaper than smoke detectors.
B. It requires a hardwired connection.
C. It can discover the heat source accurately.
D. It is designed to prevent fires from occurring.
31. Which of the following words can best describe Shanya
A. Talented and curious. B. Ambitious and determined.
C. Confident and caring. D. Brave and famous.
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. D 31. A

Katalin Karikó, a Nobel Prize Winner of this year, has had an unlikely journey. The daughter of a butcher in postwar communist Hungary, Karikó grew up in a home that lacked running water, and her family grew their own vegetables. She saw the wonders of nature all around her and was determined to become a scientist. That determination eventually brought her to the United States, where she arrived as a postdoctoral follow in 1985 with $1,200 sewn into her toddler’s teddy bear and a dream to remake medicine.
Karikó battled cockroaches (蟑螂) in a windowless lab, and faced being laughed at open and direct from her bosses and colleagues. She hesitated as prestigious research institutions increasingly combined science and money together. Despite setbacks, she never doubted her belief that an underappreciated molecule (分子) called messenger RNA could change the world. She sacrificed nearly everything for this dream, and the obstacles she faced only motivated her, so eventually she succeeded.
Karikó’s three-decade-long investigation into mRNA would lead to a surprising achievement: vaccines that protected millions of people from the most serious consequences of COVID-19. These vaccines are just the beginning of mRNA’s potential. Today, the medical community eagerly awaits more mRNA vaccines — for the flu, HIV, and other emerging infectious diseases.
Breaking Through isn’t just the story of an extraordinary woman. It’s a charge of closed-minded thinking and a demonstration to one woman’s commitment to laboring intensely in obscurity — knowing she might never be recognized in a culture that is driven by prestige, power, and privilege — because she believed her work would save lives.
32. What do we know about Katalin Karikó
A. She disliked her journey to the US.
B. She grew up in a go-green family.
C She tried to get a doctor’s degree.
D. She chased her dream with $1,200.
33. What was a problem facing Karikó when she worked in the lab
A. She had to do experiments on cockroaches.
B. She was not well received in the lab.
C. She couldn’t get along well with others.
D. She had to quit for lack of money.
34. What do the underlined words “in obscurity” in the last paragraph mean
A. Unknown to public. B. Second to none. C. In an emergency. D. At a loss.
35. Where is text most probably taken from
A. A speech at Nobel awards ceremony.
B. A scientist’s autobiography.
C. An essay on mRNA vaccines.
D. An introduction to a book.

【39题详解】
下文“It still pays relatively low wages and has millions of skilled workers. Skilled workers are important to reduce the costs because they make vehicles that need fewer rebuilds.”(它仍然支付相对较低的工资,并拥有数百万熟练工人。技术工人对降低成本很重要,因为他们生产的汽车需要更少的重建。)说明中国的人口优势有利于降低生产成本,F项“China is also in a good position to build cars for the right price.”(中国在以合适的价格生产汽车方面也处于有利地位。)衔接后文恰当。故选F项。
【40题详解】
上文“Some Chinese vehicles in the past ten years haven’t had the design expected by western buyers, so haven’t sold in enough cars in Europe to worry the western makers.”(过去10年,一些中国汽车的设计并没有达到西方买家的预期,因此在欧洲的销量不够,所以并没有让西方制造商感到担忧。)说明了过去中国汽车在欧洲遭遇的困境,并结合下文“Chinese-designed and built vehicles are not far behind in their design, and starting to enter European markets.”(中国设计和制造的汽车在设计上并不落后,并开始进入欧洲市场。)

My days always started with a two mile run on a nearby greenway. For about two years, I had a very faithful running friend. I could count on him to be waiting for me in rain or snow. This giant, orange cat was probably the most social cat I had ever encountered.
It was remarkable for a cat. He would see me climbing the hill and would join in, running alongside me for about a quarter mile until he meowed (喵喵叫) enough to get me to stop and pet him. And then I’ d give him a stroke (轻抚) on the back.
Although he was a rather fat cat, I always brought him some cat food. On fair weather afternoons, I would pick up my four year old granddaughter from preschool and we would visit the cat together. She would insist on bringing him an afternoon treat.
One day, while my granddaughter was pouring out the plastic bag full of cat food, she brought up a good point. In a matter of fact way, as if this idea had only just come to her four year old mind, she cried out, “Grandma! How long have we been visiting this cat ”
She spoke as if she were scolding (责备) me. “And we don’t even know his name! she continued.” We’ve got to call him something! She was right. For months, I had been sharing my morning runs with this cat. My granddaughter then stepped back and, deep in thought, studied the cat carefully as he ate the Happy Meal.
Then she announced, “I’ve got it! Tom!” I looked at her, puzzled.“He’ s Tom!” That’ s what we’ll call him!” she continued. All the regular runners, walkers, bikers and visitors to the greenway soon came to know the big, friendly orange cat as “Tom”.
My granddaughter loved this cat.She looked forward to our greenway walks visiting Tom,something simple that the two of us did together.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右。

【答案】范文
On a Friday in January, the forecast was calling for bad weather. Later that night, as I watched the bad snowstorm with strong winds, I became very sad as I though of my greenway friend. More than a foot and a half of snow covered the ground after the storm passed, which was far more than had been predicted. Tom was found the next day stuck under a bridge. I was so thankful he was alive! At that point, I knew what I had to do.
Tom has been part of our family for the past three years. Much like a faithful friend, Tom listens for my car to pull up in the driveway. I can sometimes see him jumping down from his upstairs lookout window and hear him running down the steps as I’m unlocking the door, making sure he beats me to the kitchen by the time I enter. As I sit at my desk finishing this tale of my faithful running friend, I realize that he chose me, not the other way around, and I’m so glad he did.

The exhibition takes place at the same time as this year’s 150th anniversary of the creation of Yellowstone National Park. The posters in the exhibition serve the purpose of both advertising and art.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Yellowstone collectors Jack and Susan Davís, and Larry and Thea Lancaster to bring this exhibition to the University of Wyoming as part of year-long celebrations recognizing Yellowstone’s 150th anniversary,” says Tamsen Hert, head of UW Libraries’ Emmett D. Chisum Special Collections. “This exhibition involves the history of printing, art, photography and advertising over 16 decades. The images reproduced are found on travel brochures, postcards and maps—many of which are held in our collections.”
One poster from the exhibition—Henry Wellge’s “Yellowstone National Park” from1904—was recently purchased with donated funds and is now part of UW Libraries’ Emmett D. Chisum Special Collections. Wellge, a productive bird’s-eye-view artist, designed the piece for the Northern Pacific Railroad, which used it to advertise the park. This is a unique piece, as posters such as this one were printed on soft paper and very few have survived.

Dan Scarfe the boss of a new company that has found a way to unlock conversation for deaf people, says the idea hit him over Christmas with his family last year.

“I had two designs, and my first design completely failed.
D. To highlight the large number of applicants.

C. She tried to get a doctor’s degree.
D. She chased her dream with $1,200.
33. What was a problem facing Karikó when she worked in the lab
A. She had to do experiments on cockroaches.
B. She was not well received in the lab.
C. She couldn’t get along well with others.
D. She had to quit for lack of money.
34. What do the underlined words “in obscurity” in the last paragraph mean
A. Unknown to public. B. Second to none. C. In an emergency. D. At a loss.
35. Where is text most probably taken from
A. A speech at Nobel awards ceremony.
B. A scientist’s autobiography.
C. An essay on mRNA vaccines.
D. An introduction to a book.
