In her 17 years on this earth, Shreyaa Venkat has done more to help the planet and the people living on it than many adults. The non-profit organization she founded, NEST4US, has helped tens of thousands of people in the United States. Through it, it’s served over 12,000 homeless people in the Washington, D.C. area by providing food and other supplies.
Venkat’s passion for helping others started as soon as she could walk, as her parents, active volunteers themselves, brought her along on their various projects, like some creative ways to volunteer. By fifth grade, she’d developed such enthusiasm for it that she started organizing her own service projects in her community.
NEST4US was born when she realized how much food waste there is, how many hungry people there are, and how simple it would be to use the former to help the latter. “There was a homeless man standing on a corner in D.C. and he was holding a sign that said ‘Hungry Need Food’,” she recalls. “So I gave him my lunch and his whole face just lit up. It was so easy, it only took me 30 seconds, and it really helped him.”
As NEST4US took off, with hundreds of volunteers helping to feed thousands of hungry people, Venkat decided to branch out with her volunteer efforts, starting three other branches of NEST4US. Serving others had become such a way of life for her that she even celebrated her 13th birthday at a homeless shelter, bringing the party to them instead of expecting gifts for herself.
As much as she has helped others, they’ve helped her too. Not only does she get a lot of joy and personal satisfaction from her volunteer work but running NEST4US has taught her important life skills like time management, public speaking, writing, and leadership. “What it’s really given me is this opinion of putting other people first,” she says.
24. What can we infer about NEST4US from the first paragraph
A. Its main aim is to make money. B. It offers people cheap supplies.
C. It takes in all homeless people. D. It is a charity organization.
25. What caused Venkat to set up NEST4US
A. Her parents’ constant suggestion. B. The memory of her hard childhood.
C. Her experience of helping a hungry man. D. Volunteers’ great influence on her.
26. Why did Venkat spend her 13th birthday at a homeless shelter
A. She held a grand party for many people.
B. She could receive many nice gifts there.
C. She got much personal satisfaction from it.
D. She saw helping others as part of her life.
27. Which of the following best describes Shreyaa Venkat
A. Caring. B. Ambitious.
C. Humorous. D. Demanding.

Taking a break during the workday is important but how often do we actually make the time to do it?For most, an eight-hour workday just doesn't seem like enough and we end up sacrificing moments of peace to make room for more moments of productivity, but according to a new study, skipping that lunch break could actually be hurting our performance.
Amazing as it may seem, taking time away from work to enjoy a short walk or a few minutes of mindful thought throughout the day can actually have positive effects on your end of day concentration and help you feel less tired after you are off work.
Scientists tasked workers in intellectually (智力上地) demanding fields-education, engineering and finance-with taking a short 15-minute walk or doing 15 minutes of mindful thinking during their lunch breaks every day for two weeks. The participants were asked to report how they were feeling near the end of the day during, before and after the study. They also filled out a short questionnaire every night, asking how much they enjoyed their lunch break The results:those who took a break to walk or mindfully relax were significantly less stressed and able to perform better at the end of the workday than those who took no breaks.Mindful relaxation in particular helped people feel less anxious at the end of the day.
According to the study, walk in nature can lead to"attention restoration"—recovery from cognitive(认知的)overload after focus and mindful relaxation can increase our positive feelings, relieve stress and start focus.
So the next time you think you should skip your lunch break to get that big project done, take a breath and consider giving yourself a moment of peace. It might just make you a more productive employee.
28. What phenomenon is mainly described in the first paragraph
A. Overwork for productivity.

29. What may make people more relaxed after work
A. Their walk with their colleagues.
B. Their good food for lunch.
C. Their timely relaxation.
D Their whole devotion.
30. Why did the scientists test the workers
A. To check their physical health.
B. To see the effect of lunch break.
C. To see how long they relax daily.
D. To check if they live an active life.
31. What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A. To tell how to perform better.

Thanks to its cold environment, Antarctica remained largely untouched by humans for thousands of years. However, since the 1990s, the last true wilderness on the planet is becoming an increasingly popular destination for adventure-seeking tourists. Now, a new study states that the visitors may be leaving behind harmful bacteria(细菌) which could devastate the area’s native bird population.
Researchers believed that the Antarctic creatures were not affected by the danger due to the continent’s extreme weather. However, microbiologist Marta Cerdà-Cuéllar was not convinced this was true. She and some colleagues decided to examine samples from Antarctic birds for evidence of human bacteria. To ensure the waste was not polluted, the scientists had to collect it from the birds themselves. This was no easy task. If they missed catching a skua at first go, the bird never came close again.
It took the scientists four years, from 2008—2011, to collect fecal(粪便) samples of 666 adult birds from 24 local species. The results of their study revealed the presence of several types of human bacteria in the bird waste.
"While we should do as much as possible to reduce transmission, it’s hard to believe that we will stop tourism and science at these sites, and so it is hard to believe that humans won’t continue to transmit pathogens(病原体)." said Kyle Elliott.
Experts, including González-Solís, believe the only way to prevent the mass destruction of the birds, is to introduce stricter regulations or, at least, obey the ones already in place. For example, while the Antarctica Treaty states clearly visitors carry their waste back home to protect the original environment, the regulation is rarely obeyed. Hopefully, officials will take steps to protect the easily hurt birds before it’s too late.
32. What does the underlined word "devastate" in Para. 1 mean
A. Increase. B. Destroy. C. Affect. D. Block.
33. What can be said about scientists finding the waste from the birds
A. This was not an easy task.
B. This proved their conclusion.
C. Their tempers contributed a lot.
D. They found polluted human bacteria.
34. How does Kyle Elliott feel when mentioning reducing tourism
A. Hopeless. B. Difficult. C. Impossible. D. Delighted.
35. What is the author’s suggestion to protect Antarctica birds
A. Make new strict rules.
B. Quit the Antarctica Treaty.
C. Take measures as soon as possible.
D. Encourage officials to strengthen cooperation.

As I played, the woman with the broom swept her way right next to me.She stopped sweeping and leaned on her broom, smiling at me.She appeared to be homeless with dirty mismatched clothes.
"You sure play beautiful music,” she said.“I think my friend would like your music.I want to hire you to play for her.” She pointed to the lone figure staring out at the ocean, then produced a few coins from her pocket.“I don’t have much, and I know you’re worth a lot, but if I give this to you, will you play a song for her She’s going through a lot.I know the music will make her feel better.”
I told her I’d be happy to play for free.

【原文】As a small child, I often wrote poems and short stories. My primary school teacher was impressed and would read my work to my classmates. I felt proud of my talent, and decided that one day I would become a famous writer. In high school, I continued to write and even started my first novel. I also wrote for the school newspaper, and for several years I’ve considered becoming a reporter. I began studying journalism and communication at university. But within a few months, I realized that I had changed my mind. I was so busy with my studies that I didn’t have time to write fiction, and I really missed it. So, with the help of my professor, I changed my major and gained a literature degree, and I was much happier. After university, I got a job to write blogs for a small newspaper office. I continued my creative writing in my spare time and started to write science fiction.I often wondered if I’d ever finish it! But I was determined to succeed. It took me eight years in total to finish the fiction. And until 14 months ago, I finally found a publisher for my book. It’s due to be published in six months! I can’t wait and I’m so glad that I never give up.

A. Caring. B. Ambitious.
C. Humorous. D. Demanding.
【答案】24. D 25. C 26. D 27. A

A This was not an easy task.
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. B 35. C

As we walked over to her friend, the Broom Lady told me that her friend had not talked for weeks. We approached, and the Broom Lady introduced me,“Annie,I got you a present to cheer you up.It’s a guitar man who is going to play a song specially for you.”

If there were a photographer passing by, I am sure he would not miss the opportunity to take a picture.
When I stopped playing and looked up,I was shocked to see a small crowed around us. They were watching and listening attentively to us.
