Smoke Detectors
A smoke detector is on the ceiling in your room. Some buildings also have heat detectors on the ceilings.Do the following to ensure the safe operation of your smoke detector:
·If your smoke detector is working properly, the red light should be on.If the red light is not blinking(闪动),contact residence hall staff immediately.

B (2017·北京卷·C)
Measles(麻疹),which once killed 450 children each year and disabled even more, was nearly wiped out in the United States 14 years ago by the universal use of the MMR vaccine(疫苗).But the disease is making a comeback, caused by a growing anti-vaccine movement and misinformation that is spreading quickly.Already this year,115 measles cases have been reported in the USA,compared with 189 for all of last year.
The numbers might sound small, but they are the leading edge of a dangerous trend. When vaccination rates are very high,as they still are in the nation as a whole, everyone is protected. This is called “herd immunity”,which protects the people who get hurt easily, including those who can't be vaccinated for medical reasons, babies too young to get vaccinated and people on whom the vaccine doesn't work.
But herd immunity works only when nearly the whole herd joins in.When some refuse vaccination and seek a free ride, immunity breaks down and everyone is in even bigger danger.
That's exactly what is happening in small neighborhoods around the country from Orange County,California, where 22 measles cases were reported this month,to Brooklyn,N.Y.,where a 17-year-old caused an outbreak last year.
The resistance to vaccine has continued for decades, and it is driven by a real but very small risk. Those who refuse to take that risk selfishly make others suffer.
Making things worse are state laws that make it too easy to opt out(决定不参加) of what are supposed to be required vaccines for all children entering kindergarten.Seventeen states allow parents to get an exemption(豁免),sometimes just by signing a paper saying they personally object to a vaccine.
Now,several states are moving to tighten laws by adding new regulations for opting out.But no one does enough to limit exemptions.
Parents ought to be able to opt out only for limited medical or religious reasons. But personal opinions Not good enough.Everyone enjoys the life-saving benefits vaccines provide, but they'll exist only as long as everyone shares in the risks.
6.The first two paragraphs suggest that ________.
A.a small number of measles cases can start a dangerous trend
B.the outbreak of measles attracts the public attention
C.anti-vaccine movement has its medical reasons
D.information about measles spreads quickly
7.Herd immunity works well when ________.
A.exemptions are allowed
B.several vaccines are used together
C.the whole neighborhood is involved in
D.new regulations are added to the state laws
根据第三段“But herd immunity works only when nearly the whole herd joins in.”
8.What is the main reason for the comeback of measles
A.The overuse of vaccine.
B.The lack of medical care.
C.The features of measles itself.
D.The vaccine opt-outs of some people.
根据第一段“But the disease is making a comeback, caused by a growing anti-vaccine movement and misinformation that is spreading quickly.”
9.What is the purpose of the passage
A.To introduce the idea of exemption.
B.To discuss methods to cure measles.
C.To stress the importance of vaccination.
D.To appeal for equal rights in medical treatment.
El Nio, a Spanish term for “the Christ child,” was named by South American fishermen who noticed that the global weather pattern, which happens every two to seven years, reduced the amount of fishes caught around Christmas.El Nio sees warm water, collected over several years in the western Pacific, flow back eastwards when winds that normally blow westwards weaken,or sometimes the other way round.
The weather effects, both good and bad,are felt in many places.Rich countries gain more from powerful Nios,on balance, than they lose.A study found that a strong Nio in 1997-98 helped America's economy grow by $ 15 billion, partly because of better agricultural harvests:farmers in the Midwest gained from extra rain. The total rise in agricultural incomes in rich countries is greater than the fall in poor ones.
But in Indonesia extremely dry forests are in flames.A multi-year drought(干旱) in south-east Brazil is becoming worse.Though heavy rains brought about by El Nio may relieve the drought in California, they are likely to cause surface flooding and other disasters.
The most recent powerful Nio,in 1997-98,killed around 21,000 people and caused damage worth $ 36 billion around the globe. But such Nios come with months of warning, and so much is known about how they happen that governments can prepare.According to the Overseas Development Institute(ODI),however, just 12% of disaster-relief funding in the past two decades has gone on reducing risks in advance, rather than recovery and rebuilding afterwards. This is despite evidence that a dollar spent on risk-reduction saves at least two on reconstruction.
Simple improvements to infrastructure(基础设施) can reduce the spread of disease.Better sewers(下水道) make it less likely that heavy rain is followed by an outbreak of the disease of bad stomach.Stronger bridges mean villages are less likely to be left without food and medicine after floods.According to a paper in 2011 by Mr.Hsiang and co-authors,civil conflict is related to El Nio's harmful effects—and the poorer the country, the stronger the link.Though the relationship may
not be causal, helping divided communities to prepare for disasters would at least reduce the risk that those disasters are followed by killing and wounding people.Since the poorest are least likely to make up for their losses from disasters linked to El Nio,reducing their losses needs to be the priority.
10.What can we learn about El Nio in paragraph 1
A.It is named after a South American fisherman.
B.It takes place almost every year all over the world.
C.It forces fishermen to stop catching fish around Christmas.
D.It sees the changes of water flow direction in the ocean.
根据第一段最后一句“El Nio sees warm water, collected over several years in the western Pacific, flow back eastwards when winds that normally blow westwards weaken,or sometimes the other way round.”
11.What may El Nios bring about to the countries affected
A.Agricultural harvests in rich countries fall.
B.Droughts become more harmful than floods.
C.Rich countries' gains are greater than their losses.
D.Poor countries suffer less from droughts economically.
根据第二段第二句“Rich countries gain more from powerful Nios,on balance,than they lose.”
12.The data provided by ODI in paragraph 4 suggest that ________.
A.more investment should go to risk reduction
B.governments of poor countries need more aid
C.victims of El Nio deserve more compensation
D.recovery and reconstruction should come first
根据第四段第三句“According to the Overseas Development Institute(ODI),however, just 12% of disaster-relief funding in the past two decades has gone on reducing risks in advance, rather than recovery and rebuilding afterwards.”
13.What is the author's purpose in writing the passage
A.To introduce El Nio and its origin.
B.To explain the consequences of El Nio.
C.To show ways of fighting against El Nio.
D.To urge people to prepare for El Nio.
I work with Volunteers for Wildlife,a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley.Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking;survival is never certain. However, when it works,it is simply beautiful.
I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown.She had found a young owl(猫头鹰) on the ground.When I arrived,I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl.It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.
I examined the chick(雏鸟) and it seemed fine.If I could locate the nest,I might have been able to put it back, but no luck.My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.
The homeowner was very helpful.A wire basket was found.I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable.I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.
Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent.I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults;they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well.I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all!The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings.I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all—LUNCH!The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.
14.What is unavoidable in the author's rescue work according to paragraph 1
A.Efforts made in vain.
B.Getting injured in his work.
C.Feeling uncertain about his future.
D.Creatures forced out of their homes.
根据第一段中的“Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking;survival is never certain.”
15.Why was the author called to Muttontown
A.To rescue a woman.
B.To take care of a woman.
C.To look at a baby owl.
D.To cure a young owl.
根据第二段中的“She had found a young owl on the ground.When I arrived,I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl.”
16.What made the chick calm down
A.A new nest. B.Some food.
C.A recording. D.Its parents.
根据第四段中的“I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.”
17.How would the author feel about the outcome of the event
A.It's unexpected. B.It's beautiful.
C.It's humorous. D.It's discouraging.
根据最后一段可知,作者这次救助猫头鹰幼雏的工作非常成功,再结合第一段中的“However,when it works,it is simply beautiful.”

Whenever you move to a new area, you should locate the fire alarm pull stations and the two exits nearest your room.____________
1.The numbers might sound small, but they are the leading edge of a dangerous trend.
2.When some refuse vaccination and seek a free ride, immunity breaks down and everyone is in even bigger danger.
1.This is called “herd immunity”,which protects the people who get hurt easily, including those who can't be vaccinated for medical reasons, babies too young to get vaccinated and people on whom the vaccine doesn't work.
This is called “herd immunity”,which引导定语从句,修饰先行词herd immunity,其中第一个who引导定语从句,修饰先行词the people,第二个who引导定语从句,修饰先行词those,on whom引导定语从句,修饰先行词people。
2.That's exactly what is happening in small neighborhoods around the country from Orange County,California, where 22 measles cases were reported this month,to Brooklyn,N.Y.,where a 17-year-old caused an outbreak last year.
3.Making things worse are state laws that make it too easy to opt out of what are supposed to be required vaccines for all children entering kindergarten.
主句属于倒置结构,主语是state laws;are making things worse是谓语部分。之所以倒置是方便state laws后面跟定语从句,从句由that引导,it是形式宾语,真正的宾语是不定式结构to opt out of...,what引导宾语从句,作介词of的宾语,entering kindergarten现在分词短语作定语,修饰children。

Pets are like our family members and their good health is something that is very important to all pet owners.Just as the pollutants, such as carbon monoxide (一氧化物) and carbon dioxide in the air, affect our health, these same environmental nasties can affect our pets too.
1 57% of dogs exposed to higher pollution levels developed brain diseases and showed signs of neuro problems. In a more recent study from the journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, researchers found that cats with breathing problems were more likely to live in households with higher indoor air pollution
Air purifiers have been brought into use in recent years. They work to remove harmful chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other environmental pollutants from the air. 2 But are they safe for pets? How can we ensure that they aren't harming our furry friends
3 The physical safety of using a mechanical device around pets is what we have to pay attention to.Air purifiers come in various shapes and sizes, from small desk-top units to large,free-standing models. In terms of physical harm, there is an existing risk of our pet becoming trapped in the electrical wire of our air purifier.Air purifiers are designed to be used in the home around children and their internal mechanisms should also be safe from small tails of our pets and other parts of their bodies. 4
Whether the air purifier improves or damages the health of our animals is also something we have to consider. The air purifiers are safe for pets, but only if they do not produce any ozone (臭氧) byproduct. 5 We should always stay away from the ones that produce even minimal quantities. We are always on the safe side by picking a standard air purifier with the classic 3-stage filtration (过滤) system of a pre-filter,HEPA filter and carbon activated filter.
Picking the wrong air purifier type can quickly make things worse for our pets.On the other hand, picking the correct air purifier can lead to a big increase in the quality of life for them.
A.At present many homes are equipped with these useful devices.
B.Before buying an air purifier,we should keep two aspects in mind.
C.Pet owners always pay close attention to the physical health of their pets.
D.Even the smallest pets shouldn't be able to access the insides of air purifiers.
E.This greatly depends on the type of air purifier and air cleaning technology used.
F.So always check the product specifications and try to find a model that does not produce any carbon monoxide.
G.A 2008 study published in Brain and Cognition showed that dogs' brains were negatively affected by the heavy pollution levels.
1.G [由下文“57% of dogs exposed to higher pollution levels developed brain diseases and showed signs of neuro problems.(57%的狗暴露在高污染水平下,会患上脑部疾病,并表现出神经问题的迹象)”可知,G选项“2008年发表在《大脑与认知》杂志上的一项研究表明,狗的大脑受到严重污染水平的负面影响。”
2.A [由上文“Air purifiers have been brought into use in recent years.(空气净化器近年来已投入使用。)”和下文“But are they safe for pets? How can we ensure that they aren't harming our furry friends?(但是它们对宠物安全吗?我们如何确保它们不会伤害我们毛茸茸的朋友?)”可知,在空气净化器已投入使用的前提下,人们开始思考它们对于宠物是否安全,说明有些家庭已经使用了这种有用的设备——空气净化器,才会提出下文的疑问,承接上下文,A选项“目前许多家庭都配备了这些有用的设备。”切题。故选A项。]
3.B [由上文“But are they safe for pets? How can we ensure that they aren't harming our furry friends?(但是它们对宠物安全吗?我们如何确保它们不会伤害我们毛茸茸的朋友?)”,下文“The physical safety of using a mechanical device around pets is what we have to pay attention to.(在宠物周围使用机械设备的身体安全是我们必须注意的)”和第五段“Whether the air purifier improves or damages the health of our animals is also something we have to consider.(空气净化
4.D [由上文“In terms of physical harm, there is an existing risk of our pet becoming trapped in the electrical wire of our air purifier.Air purifiers are designed to be used in the home around children and their internal mechanisms should also be safe from small tails of our pets and other parts of their bodies.(就身体伤害而言,我们的宠物存在被困在空气净化器电线中的风险。
切题,This指代上文“The air purifiers are safe for pets, but only if they do not produce any ozone byproduct.”。故选E项。]

Wylie lived in Scotland, far up on the hills, and helped her master take care of his sheep.
Wylie watched over the sheep and the little lambs like a soldier, and never let anything hurt them. She drove them out to pasture when it was time, and brought them safely home when it was time for that. She loved her work, and was a wonderfully fine sheepdog.
At last her master grew too old to stay alone on the hills. Before he left,he gave Wylie to two kind young men who lived in the nearest town;he knew they would be good to her. They grew very fond of her,and so did their old grandmother and the little children;she was so gentle and handsome and well behaved.
But after a while, the family noticed something very strange indeed about their dog.Every single Tuesday night, about nine o'clock,Wylie disappeared. And she would be gone all night. But every Wednesday morning, she was at the door, waiting to be let in.Her silky coat was all sweaty and muddy and her feet heavy with weariness, but her bright eyes looked up at her masters as if she were trying to explain where she had been.
Week after week, the same thing happened.Nobody could imagine where Wylie went every Tuesday night. They tried to follow her to find out,but she always slipped away.It grew to be a real mystery.Where in the world did Wylie go
In the city near the town where the kind young men lived was a big market. On Tuesday nights, the farmers used to come down from the hills, and drive their sheep through the city streets into the pens, ready to sell on Wednesday morning;that was the day they sold them. The sheep weren't used to the city noises and sights, and they always grew afraid and wild, and gave the farmers and the sheepdogs a great deal of trouble. They broke away and ran about,in everybody's way.

But just as the trouble was worst, about sunrise, the farmers would see a little silky dog come running. In and out the little dog ran like the wind, round and about, always in the right place, driving the sheep like a good school-teacher and never frightening them, till they were all safely in!All the other dogs together could not do as much as the little strange dog.As soon as her work was done, she was off and away like a fairy dog.Week after week, this happened and nobody knew who the little strange dog was.
One day,Wylie went to walk with her two masters. They happened to meet some sheep farmers. The farmers stopped short and stared at Wylie, and then they cried out,“Why,that's the dog!” And so it was.The little strange dog who helped with the sheep was Wylie. Her masters,of course, didn't know what the farmers meant till they were told all.But when hearing about the pretty strange dog,who came to market alone, they knew at last where Wylie went every Tuesday night. And they loved her better than ever.INCLUDEPICTURE "五年高考真题重做.tif"

B (2017·北京卷·C)
Measles(麻疹),which once killed 450 children each year and disabled even more, was nearly wiped out in the United States 14 years ago by the universal use of the MMR vaccine(疫苗).But the disease is making a comeback, caused by a growing anti vaccine movement and misinformation that is spreading quickly.Already this year,115 measles cases have been reported in the USA,compared with 189 for all of last year.
That's exactly what is happening in small neighborhoods around the country from Orange County,California, where 22 measles cases were reported this month,to Brooklyn,N.Y.,where a 17 year old caused an outbreak last year.
But personal opinions Not good enough.Everyone enjoys the life saving benefits vaccines provide, but they'll exist only as long as everyone shares in the risks.

7.Herd immunity works well when ________.
A.exemptions are allowed
B.several vaccines are used together
C.the whole neighborhood is involved in
D.new regulations are added to the state laws
根据第三段“But herd immunity works only when nearly the whole herd joins in.”

The weather effects, both good and bad,are felt in many places.Rich countries gain more from powerful Nios,on balance, than they lose.A study found that a strong Nio in 1997 98 helped America's economy grow by $ 15 billion, partly because of better agricultural harvests:farmers in the Midwest gained from extra rain. The total rise in agricultural incomes in rich countries is greater than the fall in poor ones.
But in Indonesia extremely dry forests are in flames.A multi year drought(干旱) in south east Brazil is becoming worse.Though heavy rains brought about by El Nio may relieve the drought in California, they are likely to cause surface flooding and other disasters.
The most recent powerful Nio,in 1997 98,killed around 21,000 people and caused damage worth $ 36 billion around the globe. But such Nios come with months of warning, and so much is known about how they happen that governments can prepare.According to the Overseas Development Institute(ODI),however, just 12% of disaster relief funding in the past two decades has gone on reducing risks in advance, rather than recovery and rebuilding afterwards. This is despite evidence that a dollar spent on risk reduction saves at least two on reconstruction.
Simple improvements to infrastructure(基础设施) can reduce the spread of disease.Better sewers(下水道) make it less likely that heavy rain is followed by an outbreak of the disease of bad stomach.Stronger bridges mean villages are less likely to be left without food and medicine after floods.According to a paper in 2011 by Mr.Hsiang and co authors, civil conflict is related to El Nio's harmful effects—and the poorer the country, the stronger the link.Though the relationship may not be causal, helping divided communities to prepare for disasters would at least reduce the risk that those disasters are followed by killing and wounding people.Since the poorest are least likely to make up for their losses from disasters linked to El Nio,reducing their losses needs to be the priority.
D.recovery and reconstruction should come first
根据第四段第三句“According to the Overseas Development Institute(ODI),however, just 12% of disaster relief funding in the past two decades has gone on reducing risks in advance, rather than recovery and rebuilding afterwards.”
I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl(猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived,I saw a 2 to 3 week old owl.It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.
根据第二段中的“She had found a young owl on the ground.When I arrived,I saw a 2 to 3 week old owl.”
16.What made the chick calm down
A.A new nest. B.Some food.
C.A recording. D.Its parents.
根据第四段中的“I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.”
17.How would the author feel about the outcome of the event
A.It's unexpected. B.It's beautiful.
C.It's humorous. D.It's discouraging.
根据最后一段可知,作者这次救助猫头鹰幼雏的工作非常成功,再结合第一段中的“However,when it works,it is simply beautiful.”

2.That's exactly what is happening in small neighborhoods around the country from Orange County,California, where 22 measles cases were reported this month,to Brooklyn,N.Y.,where a 17 year old caused an outbreak last year.

In a more recent study from the journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, researchers found that cats with breathing problems were more likely to live in households with higher indoor air pollution.
Air purifiers have been brought into use in recent years. They work to remove harmful chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other environmental pollutants from the air. 2 But are they safe for pets? How can we ensure that they aren't harming our furry friends
3 The physical safety of using a mechanical device around pets is what we have to pay attention to.Air purifiers come in various shapes and sizes, from small desk top units to large, free standing models.
We are always on the safe side by picking a standard air purifier with the classic 3 stage filtration (过滤) system of a pre filter,HEPA filter and carbon activated filter.
How can we ensure that they aren't harming our furry friends?(但是它们对宠物安全吗?我们如何确保它们不会伤害我们毛茸茸的朋友?)”,下文“The physical safety of using a mechanical device around pets is what we have to pay attention to.(在宠物周围使用机械设备的身体安全是我们必须注意的)”和第五段“Whether the air purifier improves or damages the health of our animals is also something we have to consider.(空气净化器是否改善或损害动物的健康也是我们必须考虑的问题)”可知,就上文提到的空气净化器对于宠物是否安全的问题,下文从两个方面入手,确保人们买到合适的空气净化器,承接上下文,B选项“在购买空气净化器之前,我们应该记住两个方面。”切题。故选B项。]

In and out the little dog ran like the wind, round and about, always in the right place, driving the sheep like a good school teacher and never frightening them, till they were all safely in!All the other dogs together could not do as much as the little strange dog.As soon as her work was done, she was off and away like a fairy dog.Week after week, this happened and nobody knew who the little strange dog was.
And they loved her better than ever.
