Beijing Opera, ink wash painting, paper cutting…, what happens if we use these traditional art styles
in cartoons In fact, Chinese cartoon makers have been working on this. Their works are full of
Chinese features.
Little Tadpole Looking for Mummy, 1960. This is China’s first ink wash
painting cartoon. The cartoon makers drew all the animals, plants and rocks in the
film with ink and brush. It’s only about 15 minutes long, but it took lots of work.

Pigsy Eats Watermelon, 1958, Zhu Bajie finds some watermelons, he doesn’t
bring the fruit back to his hungry friends, but enjoys the watermelons all by
himself. The character Zhu Bajie was cut out of colored paper. Cartoon makers
moved its body parts and let it “eat” the watermelon.
The Story of Afanti, 1979, The wise man Afanti fights against the bad people and

Have you ever heard of virtual (虚拟的) tours Children from more than 180,000 families in
China can now go on virtual tours of ten world-famous museums, including the Museum of Modern
Art in New York City, the German Historical Museum in Berlin, the National Air and Space
Museum in Washington, D.C and so on. The shows are produced by Aha School, an education
company. The families each pay 15 yuan to watch. The company also shares their shows with 174
rural (农村的) classrooms for free.
Ma Xiaoyan is a teacher in rural Sichuan. He is very supportive of the project. “The children
here are very poor. They have never visited a museum. For some of them, even going to the closest
town is difficult. The project helps them know more about the outside world,” he said.
Educators are excited about the museum project. It shows how live streaming (在线直播) can
help rural education. Live streaming is already widely popular on social media. However, it wasn’t
used for education until recently.
Aha School is not alone. A few schools in the cities in China have also begun sharing their
lessons with rural schools. But some of the projects fail to work so well.
The museum project of Aha School has been a success. Pan Lisheng says it isn’t the problem of
technology. Instead, it is because few educators have worked out how to make the lessons
interesting.
Pan makes sure that their shows will interest all the children. “Every child is a unique flower,”
Pan said.

things. But one man sees it differently. Samuel West from Sweden made his own Museum of Failure.
