B
Landscape architect Kotchakorn Voraakhom has designed a new green roof on the Rangsit Campus of Thammasat University, about 25 miles north of central Bangkok, Thailand. Her imaginative work challenges the common thinking that urbanization has a negative impact on the planet, whether flooding, excess (过度的) energy use, disrupted (扰乱) biodiversity or the heat island effect.
The 236, 806-square-foot structure, which opened in December 2019, includes a flood water management system and Asia’s largest rooftop organic farm. It combines modern landscape architecture with traditional agricultural knowledge, creating a green and friendly environment.
The green roof, containing an H-shaped landscape, looks like a futuristic hill with a brick building beneath it. The hill features a complex pattern of zigzagging terraces (之字形梯田) of planted beds, leading all the way down to the bottom. When rainwater hits the roof, it flows down the zigzags while being absorbed by the soil in the beds, The excess water is directed into four storage ponds — with a capacity of up to 3 million gallons. The process slows down the flow speed of rainwater runoff compared to a normal concrete rooftop. This keeps the area from flooding during heavy rains.
The roof’s terraces are filled with organically grown crops, including a drought tolerant variety of rice, many local vegetables and herbs. The farm can supply the canteens on campus with a large amount of rice, herbs and vegetables a year. The food waste is composted (把……制成堆肥) to fertilize the farm, and water from the storage ponds is used to water plants, creating an entirely localized and circular system.
The farm serves as an outdoor classroom and a source of local jobs, too. Farmers offer workshops on sustainable agriculture and nutrition as part of the university’s sustainability curriculum. “Students and community members are invited to participate in seasonal seeding, harvesting, and so on,” says Voraakhom. “The urban farm is training a new generation of organic farmers with real-world skills. It also promotes a sense of community.”
24. What can we say about Voraakhom’s work
A. It’s short-lived. B. It’s creative.
C. It’s demanding. D. It’s time-consuming.
25. Why is the rooftop designed to be zigzag
A. To store more water.
B. To plant diverse vegetables.
C. To slow the speed of water flow.
D. To make it look more attractive than other buildings.
26. What can be inferred about the farm from paragraph 4
A. It uses food as fertilizer. B. It benefits the environment.
C. It improves students’ lifestyle. D. It produces vegetables and fruits.
27. What does the author want to show by mentioning the outdoor classroom
A. Students can learn hands-on knowledge on the farm.
B. Farmers working on the farm can become professors.
C. The farm prevents government from offering people jobs.
D. The farm harms the relationship between university and community.
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. B 27. A
【解析】

【25题详解】
细节理解题。由第三段中“The hill features a complex pattern of zigzagging terraces (之字形梯田) of planted beds, leading all the way down to the bottom. When rainwater hits the roof, it flows down the zigzags while being absorbed by the soil in the beds, The excess water is directed into four storage ponds — with a capacity of up to 3 million gallons. The process slows down the flow speed of rainwater runoff compared to a normal concrete rooftop. (小山以之字形梯田种植床为特征,一直通向底部。当雨水到达屋顶时,它沿着Z字形流下,同时被种植床上的土壤吸收。多余的水被引导到四个容量高达300万加仑的蓄水池中。与普通混凝土屋顶相比,这一过程减缓了雨水径流的流速)”可知,屋顶设计成之字形是为了减慢水流的速度。故选C项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。由第四段中“The food waste is composted (把……制成堆肥) to fertilize the farm, and water from the storage ponds is used to water plants, creating an entirely localized and circular system. (食物垃圾被堆肥以给农场施肥,储存池中的水被用来给植物浇水,形成了一个完全本地化的循环系统)”可知,食物垃圾可用来堆肥,储存池中的水可用来浇灌植物,无污染无浪费,此农场有益于环境。故选B项。
【27题详解】

Can clothes make phone calls, play music, dial your friend’s number, keep you warm during cold weather, or operate your computer
This is not fantasy (幻想). A British company, called Electrotextiles, has created a kind of clothes that have a mind of their own! Scientists have invented a cloth that can be mixed with electronic materials to create intelligent clothing. The result is electronic clothes.
These clothes are wire-free, soft to touch and washable! Like any electronic equipment, these high-tech clothes have to be powered. A small nine-volt (伏特) battery serves the purpose. But the researchers hope that in the near future, the clothes will produce electricity by using body heat.
The Electrotextiles team has also invented the world’s first cloth keyboard. This keyboard can be sewn into your trousers or skirt. To use this equipment, you needn’t buy a computer. All you will do is tap on your lap! The equipment may replace computers in the future!
Another useful cloth is the shirt mobile phone This invention makes drivers chat comfortably — with both hands on the wheel! Other popular electronic wears include the ordinary jacket and the electronic ski-jacket with a built-in heater. The ski-jacket is also programmed to send signals to a satellite. This technology is known as global positioning (全球定位) and can be used to look for lost skiers. .
Having completed the cloth keyboard, scientists have already started to work on a new project — a necktie that can be used as a computer’s mouse.
28. Why does the author ask the question in paragraph 1
A. To tell us technology is developing fast.
B. To make us have a dream for the future.
C. To get the readers interested in the topic.
D. To make us believe in the author’s idea.

D
Lay eggs and make noises — that’s it Anyone involved in chicken farming knows that the animals are capable of much more. Researchers have found evidence that roosters (公鸡) could recognize themselves in a mirror. Whether this is successful, however, depends on the experimental contexts.
Whether animals can recognize themselves and thus have self-awareness is one of the central questions in behavioral research. The mark test, a classic test for self-recognition came to the scientists. In the test, if an animal stands in front of a mirror and begins to explore the colored mark placed on its body, this is considered proof that it recognizes its reflection as itself.
“However, our goal was to conduct the mirror test in an environment that is better adapted to the ecologically relevant behavior of the roosters,” says Sonja, a researcher from the University of Bonn. She came up with the idea of using a natural behavior of roosters for the experiment.
Initially, the researchers set up a test area and placed a net to separate two compartments (隔间), through which the roosters could see each other. Then a picture of a fox was placed onto the ceiling of one compartment. Faced with the predator, the roosters let out 77 alarm calls in the presence of a partner, but only 17 when they were alone. The result shows that most roosters, faced with a fox, do alarm partners, which is the perfect illustration of the animals’ self-awareness. The next step was to place a mirror between the two compartments instead of the net. In all, only 25 alarm calls were let out. “The result indicates that the roosters don’t mistake their reflection for a partner, and possibly recognize themselves in their mirror image,” says Sonja.
For comparison, the team also performed the classic mark test. Here, the roosters didn’t recognize themselves in the mirror. The research team sees clear evidence that the classic mirror-mark test produces more reliable results when the behavior of the particular species is included in an ecologically relevant context. “In the classic situation, a rooster may not show self-recognition,” says Sonja. “But when a fox threatens him, it becomes clear that his reflection is not another rooster, but himself.” Further research on animals’ self-awareness is needed so as to better understand animal rights and animal welfare.
32. What is the purpose of the mark test
A. To explain why animals show certain behavior.
B. To discover what behavioral research focuses on.
C. To tell whether animals can identify their mirror image.
D. To reveal how animals get used to the natural environment.
33. What does the underlined word “predator” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Enemy. B. Partner. C. Researcher. D. Reflection.
34. Why did the researchers add a mirror in the second step
A. To present the experiment result. B. To change the experimental condition.
C. To replace the experiment subject. D. To simplify the experimental process.
35. What is the passage mainly about
A. Animal behavior draws researchers’ attention.
B. Animal welfare deserves more human efforts.
C. Roosters’ self-recognition works in classic mark tests.
D. Roosters’ self-awareness improves in threatening contexts.
【答案】32. C 33. A 34. B 35. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了研究人员通过标记测试来确认公鸡是否有自我认识,介绍了研究开展的经过以及发现。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Whether animals can recognize themselves and thus have self-awareness is one of the central questions in behavioral research. The mark test, a classic test for self-recognition came to the scientists. In the test, if an animal stands in front of a mirror and begins to explore the colored mark placed on its body, this is considered proof that it recognizes its reflection as itself.(动物是否能够认识自己,从而具有自我意识是行为研究的核心问题之一。标记测试,一个经典的自我认知测试来到了科学家们的面前。在测试中,如果一只动物站在镜子前,开始探索放在它身上的彩色标记,这就证明它认出了镜子里的自己)”可知,标记测试的目的是判断动物是否能识别自己的镜像。故选C。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Then a picture of a fox was placed onto the ceiling of one compartment.(然后在一个隔间的天花板上放了一幅狐狸的画)”以及画线句“Faced with the predator , the roosters let out 77 alarm calls in the presence of a partner, but only 17 when they were alone(面对这个predator,公鸡在伴侣在场时发出了 77 个警报声,但在他们独自一人时只有 17 个)”可知,此处predator指代上文的fox,面对狐狸的画像,公鸡发出警报,结合常识可知,狐狸是公鸡的敌人,故划线词意思是“敌人”。故选A。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Initially, the researchers set up a test area and placed a net to separate two compartments (隔间), through which the roosters could see each other.(最初,研究人员建立了一个测试区域,并放置了一张网,将两个隔间隔开,公鸡可以通过这个隔间看到彼此)”以及“The next step was to place a mirror between the two compartments instead of the net. In all, only 25 alarm calls were let out. “The result indicates that the roosters don’t mistake their reflection for a partner, and possibly recognize themselves in their mirror image,” says Sonja.(下一步是在两个隔间之间放置一面镜子,而不是网子。总共只发出了25次警报。索尼娅说:“结果表明,公鸡不会把自己的倒影误认为是伴侣,它们可能会在镜子里认出自己。”)”可知,一开始放的是网,后面放了镜子导致实验结果发生了变化,研究人员在第二步中添加了一面镜子是为了改变实验条件,来观察实验结果是否有所不同。故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Lay eggs and make noises — that’s it Anyone involved in chicken farming knows that the animals are capable of much more. Researchers have found evidence that roosters (公鸡) could recognize themselves in a mirror. For most people, adopting (收养) a pet is one of the best decisions that they can ever make in their lives. In addition to giving an animal a home and a loving family, the owner will find the company of a pet brings more happiness than expected.
For someone like Maria, having a pet was very suitable. She was all alone after moving to a new apartment in Brazil, which made her feel lonely.
So when she found a cute black puppy named Chips, she knew she had to take him home. Maria thought that Chips would be able to fill the emptiness that she had been experiencing from living all alone.
Maria was right. Once she took the puppy home, they immediately bonded. However, as Maria had to work during the day, she was worried about leaving Chips home alone in her apartment. She was also worried that his crying would upset her neighbors.
One night, when she returned home, outside her door was a package with a folded note attached to it. Maria knew that she was in trouble. She hoped that she would not be evicted (驱逐) from her new apartment because of Chips. She loved Chips so much, and she was afraid that she might have to get rid of him because he made too much noise whenever she was away. Maria was frightened and wondered who could have left it at the door because she had little contact with the people in the building except her neighbor, Angelia. In fact, they only said hello few times.
However, when she noticed the names on the folded note, she found that it wasn’t addressed to her but to her dog, Chips, and that it was “written” by another dog named Corote. Maria opened the package first and found a few toys for pets.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Curious, Maria opened the note and started reading it.

With Chips following her, Maria knocked at Angelia’s door.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Curious, Maria opened the note and started reading it. The note, which was actually written by her neighbor Angelia in Corote’s voice, said she’d noticed Chips crying a lot. She wanted to give Chips some toys to play with so that he wouldn’t feel alone when Maria was away. Besides, Chips was invited to play with Corote. Maria was deeply moved and felt relieved after reading the note. Instead of expressing discontent, her kind neighbor was really understanding and tried to offer support. Maria felt she needed to meet Angelia and her dog.
With Chips following her, Maria knocked at Angelia’s door. The door opened and Maria saw Angelia, smiling at her. Corote, Angelia’s dog, followed her and stared at Chips happily. The two dogs immediately hit it off. A pleasant atmosphere was created when Maria and Angelia were chatting. After that, the two pairs regularly played together. In the process, Maria also got valuable advice from Angelia. Through their shared experiences and the joy their pets brought them, Maria and her neighbor formed a deep connection and their lives became very colorful and meaningful.

Another useful cloth is the shirt mobile phone. This invention makes drivers chat comfortably — with both hands on the wheel!
29. What do we know about the high-tech clothes according to the text
A. They feel hard. B. They can be washed.
C. They need wires. D. They don’t need electricity.
30. What can the electronic ski-jacket be used to do in the future
A. Help skiers find their way. B. Produce electricity.
C. Replace the computer’s keyboard. D. Work as a computer’s mouse.
31. What is the text intended to tell us
A. The development of electronic clothes.
B. The function of electronic clothes.
C. The fun of wearing electronic clothes.
D. The process of making electronic clothes.
