B
It was the early 1950s, and I was a member of the A class at Armidale High School in northern New
South Wales.
In second and third year we all did General Maths, and our teacher was Mrs. Lindsay. Her arrival at our
classroom was always quick, “Good morning, everyone!" Small but energetic, she would drop her things on
the teacher's table, and move to the blackboard quickly, going on the material of the last lesson as if we had
just been away from the room for five minutes.
I've thought a lot about Mrs. Lindsay over the years. What was her special magic There are two reasons.
She loved her subject, and she loved us, in a patient way. She called us all by our first names pleasantly. She
had a way of teaching that I loved.
“Now we could go down this path, couldn't we We could argue this, and then this, but that doesn't
work because of this. No Can Do (NCD)!” She would put a big cross, and write “NCD” against what she
had put down. “Right! Why not go down this new path And she would show us that this new way worked.
It was fun, and her love for maths caught on. We all did well for her, the poor students as well as the skilled.
I've never found maths difficult, and I put that skill down to her.
In fourth and fifth years, Mrs. Lindsay didn't teach us anymore. But as the final exam were coming, one
of my friends became nervous. With great courage, he went to see Mrs. Lindsay, and asked if she would help
him prepare for his exam. “Of course!" she said, and did just that, after school, in her own time. He passed.
What a good teacher!
34. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. What Mrs. Lindsay was like. B. How Mrs. Lindsay started her class.
C. How Mrs. Lindsay treated her students. D. How Mrs. Lindsay entered her class.
35. What does the writer mean by saying “I put that skill down to her” in paragraph 4
A. He forgot the maths skill Mrs. Lindsay has taught.
B. He found that the maths skill was difficult to learn.
C. He thought Mrs. Lindsay was the reason why he learned maths well.
D. He hoped Mrs. Lindsay would teach him more maths skills.
36. What can you learn from the passage
A. In the second and third year, the writer took two maths classes with five minutes’ break.
B. Mrs. Lindsay’s love for her job and students is her special magic.
C. Mrs. Lindsay was so strict that even the poor did well in the math.
D. Mrs. Lindsay helped the writer to pass the exam even though she didn’t teacher him anymore.
37. Which of the following can best describe Mrs. Lindsay
A. Energetic and warm-hearted B. Brave and patient
C. Strict and strong-willed D. humorous and careful
C
Month ago, I broke a nail. My other nails looked amazing, but now
one was a mess. Clearly, there was no need to keep the others, so I took out
the nail scissors to cut them all off.
“What are you doing, Mom ” my daughter cried. “Your nails look
great! Don’t cut them!”
4
“But they’re ruined,” I said, waving the broken one in her face.
“They’re not ruined,” she said. “You still have nine nails left!”
I stopped, with the scissors still in my hand. My nails certainly weren’t perfect anymore, and the
opposite(反义词) of perfect is ruined, right I mean, this is how I think about most things: ____________.
Take myself for example. I can spend weeks buying only necessary things, such as food for my family.
And then one day, I’ll see something expensive that I really like and buy it. Then, I think to myself, “Well, I
already spent $100 on that dress last week, so I may as well spend $50 on this lipstick,” and give up saving
completely.
I’ve thought about why I act this way, but I don’t know what causes this. My brain only sees “perfect”
or “ruined”. We humans are never just good or bad. We have wins and we have losses from time to time, and
they are hard to tell apart.
Some people understand this naturally, while others take a long time to accept that. For most of us,
learning not to do the thing we’re used to doing needs effort and discomfort. However, we should remind
ourselves that we sometimes make mistakes, and that doesn’t mean we’ve failed. We need to accept that
things will sometimes go wrong. In fact, failure is part of life.
And so, with my daughter’s words ringing in my ears, I decided to keep my nine nice nails. I feel
uncomfortable every time I look at my hands, but I still want to live with my choice. It’s a perfect exercise
in imperfection. Although I may need my daughter there to guide me again.
38. Why did the writer want to cut off her nails
A. She wanted to stop them from being ruined.
B. It’s uneasy to do housework with long nails.
C. Her daughter didn’t like the way they looked.
D. She didn’t want to have broken nails.
39. Which sentence can be put in the ____________
A. Life is full of choices. B. Good things never last long.
C. It's all or nothing. D. Anything can’t be perfect in life.
40. What did the author think of failure at last
A. It's normal to have it in life.
B. It can help people to be stronger.
C. It is something we don't need to care about.
D. It can lead to complete ruin.
41. What is the best title of this passage
A. Life is full of choices. B. Living with a good choice
C. Accepting imperfection D. Turning broken into perfect
D
We are now having face-to-face chats with friends instead of talking online. But have you ever been in
a conversation that you wish you could run away from Scientists have found that you might not be alone.
A research team surveyed 806 volunteers about a recent conversation they had with someone close to
them. The volunteers were asked about the real length (长度) of the conversation, and how long they thought
the other person wanted to talk for.
About one-third of the conversation length was unwanted, according to the survey. Also, more
volunteers believed that they wanted to end the conversation first, and they continued talking for about 3.87
minutes before they found that the other speaker wished the same thing. Situations are similar when it comes
to strangers. Only about 1.6 percent of the conversations ended when both speakers wanted them to.
5
The paper pointed out that when they talk to strangers, what makes people hide their real thoughts may
be their politeness. When talking to close friends and family, it may be their kindness which stops ending
the conversation too soon. They think it may hurt the other’s feelings.
So, what is the best way to end a conversation Saying you only have limited(有限的) time to talk at
the beginning of the conversation is a good way. “Remember conversations don't end because people don't
know when the other person wants to go,” Adam Mastroianni who led the study told the Inverse website.
“You should make your partner feel good about the end of the chat by clearly communicating that you had
a nice time and would like to talk again.”
42. What did the research team survey the volunteers about
A. Their favorite conversation topics.
B. Their expected length of conversations.
C. Their opinions toward face-to-face chats.
D. Their ways of ending an unwanted conversation.
43. What did the researchers find out in their survey
A. Nearly half of the length of conversations was unwanted.
B. Most conversations ended when both speakers wanted.
C. Ending conversations with strangers was easier than with friends.
D. Many people often talk longer than they wanted in a conversation.
44. What may be the reason people don’t stop talking to strangers when they want to stop
A. Out of politeness. B. Out of happiness.
C. Out of kindness. D. Out of patience.
45. What is Mastroianni’s advice on how to end a conversation
A. Searching for a good excuse.
B. Saying you want to leave directly.
C. Waiting until the other speaker wants to end.
D. Showing that you are glad to talk next time.
