恐龙在刚演化出来的时候，都是吃肉的动物，它们以吃外族爬行类动物为生。
但由于先前吃植物的外族爬行类动物大量绝灭，地球上植物就有了很大的剩余，一部分吃肉的恐龙由食肉改为食素。于是恐龙才有了肉食与植食之分。
