They tell me taking a more rigorous course or trying an activity I may not succeed in will ruin my chances at college admission. Even staying up late to do something that isn’t related to school, they see it as a risk to my academic work and college success.”Kids all over the world admit they are under huge pressure to be perfect. So students are usually in shock when I tell them I never expect perfection. How could a leader of admission at one of America’s most selective colleges not want the best and the brightest The reality is that perfection doesn’t exist.I’ve known teenagers will never be perfect. They do silly things, fall down, and lack confidence. The ability to bounce back is a fundamental life skill students have to learn on their own. The lessons of failure can’t be taught in a classroom. During my weekend of interviews, another student told me, “I’m ashamed to admit I failed calculus(微积分), but I decided to take it again and got a B-plus. I will still take calculus, and even though I don’t love it, I’m glad I pushed through!” I asked him what he learned from the experience. “I learned to let go of shame,” he said. “I realized that I can’t let a grade define(定义)my success. I also learned that if you want anything eagerly, you can achieve it.”I smiled as I wrote his words down on the application-review form. Apparently, he has the coping skills to adjust to college life. Failure is about growth, learning, overcoming and moving on. Let’s allow young people to fail. Not only will they learn something, it might even get them into college!24. What does the underlined word “rigorous” in the first paragraph mean A. Absurd. B. Lively. C. Challenging. D. Special.25. The college teachers would love the student for his perfection.B. He succeeded in persuading the student to enter college.C. The student realized his dream of being a perfect person.D. He thought the student would have a promising future.27. What would be the best title for the passage A. Learn to Fail B. Learn to LiveC. Try to Succeed D. One morning this year he found something horrible; Hundreds of dead songbirds, so thick they looked like a carpet. Nearly 1,000 songbirds died during the night after crashing into the center’s windows. According to bird experts, the result was caused by a combination of migration conditions, rain, and the exhibition hall's low lights and walls with windows.Birds don’t see clear glass and don’t understand it’s a deadly barrier. When they see plants or bushes through windows, they head for them, killing themselves in the process. Birds that migrate(迁徙)at night, like sparrows, rely on the stars to navigate(导航). Bright lights from buildings both attract and confuse them, leading to window strikes or birds flying around the lights until they die from tiredness—a phenomenon known as deadly light attraction. But even in the best of circumstances, spring and fall are dangerous times for migrating birds. When they migrate over major cities, the risks increase. Hundreds or thousands of dead birds may appear on city streets after a wave of migrants has passed through. In all, about 100 million to 1 billion birds die each year in North America from crashing buildings. The good news is that people can greatly reduce the danger with some simple methods. Window strikes are easily preventable, said Anna Pidgeon, an expert at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Architects can design windows with markings in the glass that birds can easily recognize, she said. People can paint their windows as well.32. What caused songbirds to die according to Paragraph 1 A. The brooch is so beautiful that he was unwilling to leave the store until he had purchased it. But it was too expensive- $5. His family was very poor and his parents struggled to make ends meet. Five dollars would buy almost a week's food for his family.Antonio couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Susan. Slim and beautiful, his mother was the center of the home and the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children, but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s door and went inside. Standing proudly and straight in his flour-sack(面粉袋改做的)shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time ”“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while.”Antonio respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would be surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering(锤打)from a side street, Antonio suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Antonio knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece. That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin.注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。Every day after school, Antonio started his plan.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________The day finally came!____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________威宁县2023~2024学年度第一学期高中素质教育期末测试试卷高二英语参考答案第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分)1~5 ABBCA 6~10 BCBCB 11~15 ACAAC 16~20 CABCA第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)21~25 BABCC 26~30 DADBD 31~35 ADACC第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)36~40 EDBAF第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分)第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)41-45 DACAD 46-50 BBCDB 51~55 ADCAC第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)56. recently 57. Cold and hungry, Antonio wandered around, searching for nail bags carefully from one street to another. To save more money, the determined boy even decided to deliver papers in the early morning. Every coin he won went to the soda tin, his treasured “bank”, and then all the tiredness disappeared magically. Each time he passed by, the brooch in the shop window would remind him what he did was worthwhile. Day by day, his soda tin became heavier and heavier. Six weeks passed before he even knew it. Then approached Christmas Eve.The day finally came! Antonio stole into his room and cautiously took out the soda tin, poured all the coins out and began to count. Five dollars and twenty cents! He counted it a second time, and no mistake. His hard work eventually paid off! Holding the soda tin firmly, Antonio rushed for the shop without a second’s delay. Wearing the beautiful brooch and knowing the story behind it, Susan was too overjoyed to utter a word. I’d like to share with you my impression of Paris. Actually, there’s something interesting to see in every corner of Paris: the old buildings, neighborhoods, and the historical monuments. The weather’s been great too, cool and dry. Some aspects of life here are different from those in the United States. The most obvious thing is that there is much more activity in the streets than in a typical US city. People gather together in open markets, cafes, parks, and squares. Then, of course, there’s the food. Food seems to be more important here. It’s beautifully shown in windows and markets. Everything is fresher and better tasting than at home. I’ve gained five pounds since I arrived. There are a few things that bother me though. I’m still having a hard time with the language. People speak very fast and it’s hard to get them to repeat things. People, in general, are less warm here and it’s hard to make friends. I guess that can be true in any big city in a new country, but the French do seem to be less friendly than the people back home. 展开更多...... 收起↑ 资源预览
