My name is Arianna Traviglia and I’m a senior cultural and heritage researcher at the Centre for Cultural Heritage Technology at the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, Italy.
As head of the team, I encourage the development of new technologies to maintain and protect important archaeological (考古学的) findings. Right now, I am working in the field of Pompeii, an ancient Roman city which was destroyed and buried under 13 to 20 feet of ash and small rocks during a volcanic eruption in 79 AD.With the help of a robot, I try to carefully reconstruct (重建) the city’s 2,000-year-old broken frescoes (壁画). The project is called RePAIR.
There are thousands of fresco pieces in Pompeii, and it was nearly impossible for a human to reconstruct all the irregular pieces into big, meaningful paintings in the past. Technology now allows us to do it-the robot we use is running by artificial intelligence (AI). As it examines a piece, it searches a database for a match, and then sends the data back to its hands to fit matching pieces together, saving a lot of hours. Its soft human-like arms and hands allow it to hold and examine the easily broken pieces without damaging them. The technology is likely to allow many museums around the world to reconstruct large-scale broken frescoes or similar objects in the future.
In RePAIR, I’m studying the hyperspectral (高光谱的) images of the fresco pieces in storage and comparing them with the paintings on the walls of the House of the Painters at Work, part of a building in Pompeii. By comparing the resemblances in the images, we will be able to work out whether the broken pieces were from the same wall.
I studied history and archaeology in college. Archaeology helps us understand where we come from, and technology enriches that exploration. I’m glad I’m a translator of the two worlds. My mind runs wild when I think about the exciting Roman life that we are still missing because Pompeii’s frescoes were damaged and haven’t been reconstructed.
24.What is the author mainly responsible for now
A.Repairing the damaged archaeological findings. B.Designing robots used for archaeology.
C.Discovering ancient cities hidden beneath the ground. D.Reporting on recent studies of historical ruins.
25.What is mentioned about the robot used in the project
A.It may cause further damage to artworks. B.It takes more time to the examine the artworks.
C.It doesn’t need human operators. D.It has already been widely used in museums.
26.What does the underlined word “resemblances” in Paragraph4 mean
A.Mistakes. B.Similarities. C.Damages. D.Documents.
27.How does the author find her work in RePAIR
A.Dangerous. B.Meaningful. C.Relaxing. D.Successful.

An associate university professor in Florida has completed his research mission and set a new world record in the process: living 100 days beneath the ocean’s surface.
On Friday morning, Dr. Joseph Dituri felt the sun’s rays for the first time since he began the project 22 feet below the waters of Key Largo, Florida, on March 1.
Dituri,55, a biomedical engineer who teaches at the University of South Florida and calls himself “Dr. Deep Sea”, spent just over three months at the bottom of the Emerald Lagoon in Jules’ Undersea Lodge, the only underwater hotel in the United States.
The research project, Project Neptune 100, was organized by the Key Largo-based Marine Resources Development Foundation and focused on ocean conservation research and studying how high pressure affects the human body.
The US Navy veteran said he’d noticed one impact: The water pressure seems to have shrunken his height by half an inch. Dituri stood at 6 feet 1 inch tall before starting his mission, the University of South Florida stated in a news release.
The scientist began the project with a belief that increased pressure could help humans live longer and prevent aging-related diseases, the news release said. Dituri said he hopes his underwater research will benefit the treatment of a variety of illnesses, including traumatic brain injuries.
Dituri also used the project as an educational experience for the youth. “We have interacted with thousands of school children to get them interested in science, technology, engineering and math, “Dituri told Guinness World Records on June 8. While underwater, he continued teaching his college students virtually.
Dituri broke the Guinness World Record for longest time living underwater at the 74-day mark of his project, on May 13. The previous record stood at 73 days, two hours and 34 minutes, set at the same location al Dituri’s successful attempt.

30.What did Dr. Joseph Dituri expect of living underwater
A.It’s beneficial to human health. B.It does harm to human body.
C.It’s a very painful experience. D.It’s the same as living on land.

You have never seen. the dodo bird in your lifetime. Driven to extinction on the island of Mauritius in 1692, the species has become a thing of legend. But it could soon be brought back to life.
A company called Colossal Biosciences, which has offices in Austin, plans to “de-extinct the species alongside some other well-known extinct species, the woolly mammoth (猛犸象) and Tasmanian tiger. According to the company, all three will be de-extinct within the next decade.
The dodo bird was a giant. flightless pigeon (鸽子) on the island of Mauritius. The island, off the east coast of Africa, was visited by sailors in the early 1600’s. When sailors arrived there, they would walk around the island and knock the head of the dodos because there was nothing else to do on the island. By 1692, the species was extinct.
“Bringing back extinct animals,” says Forrest Galante, a scientist who serves as a conservation advisor to Colossal Biosciences, “isn’t just because we can. In the case of the dodo, it will put back something at the top of the food chain. Removing the bird created a gap in the ecosystem of the environment. Recovering it, in theory, should help fill that gap. You’re bringing back a creature, an individual and a group of them that will most importantly repair a damaged ecosystem, because they’ve been removed by human beings,” says Galante.
Just like in Jurassic Park, DNA is required to bring back an extinct animal. DNA from species like the dodo bird and woolly mammoth can be recovered. According to Galante, this DNA is then hatched into a related species that is living today. In the case of the dodo bird. a pigeon is used. When the pigeon lays eggs, dodo birds will hatch from the eggs.
The new dodos will not be the exact same type of bird, but close enough to fill the gaps their extinction left behind.
32.What does the company Colossal Biosciences plan to do
A.Bring back some extinct animal species in ten years.
B.Preserve the remains of extinct animals.
C.Document the history of extinct species.
D.Study the habitats of extinct species.
33.Why did dodo birds go extinct
A.They were hunted by big animals. B.Their living environment changed.
C.Humans killed them out of boredom. D.Humans greatly hunted them for meat.
34.What does Forrest Galante think of bringing back the dodo bird
A.It can be helpful to ecosystems. B.It can be very inspiring.
C.It isn’t very necessary. D.It isn’t quite possible.
35.What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A.The role of pigeons in bringing back extinct species.
B.How people can take out DNA from extinct animals.
C.Who inspired the idea of bringing back the dodos.
D.The use of DNA for bringing dodo birds back to life.

I am a teacher and I have had the great pleasure of teaching for ten years. Early on in my career, I had one 4th grade student who challenged me and presented a “problem” in an interesting manner. This student would watch as I wrote on the board and raise her hand with a little smile on her face. When I called on her, she would correct me saying things like, “Mr. Griffith, you spelled ‘millennium’ wrong.” On that particular day, I was tired and depressed, and I did not take this statement very well. In fact, you might say I was “ungrateful” that morning for the student noticing my mistake.
On my first break, I stormed into the teachers’ lunch room and saw a trusted colleague. I told her what had happened and said that this student was being very disrespectful for pointing this out in front of the class. I said that this problem was ruining my day.
She smiled knowingly, as good friends do at these moments, looked at me and said, “That is one of those situations that you can complain about and build up resentment (怨恨) or you could change it into something positive. That student had to be paying close attention to find the errors you made. You might think about giving students a reward for finding the errors. Then, if you make an error, you can tell them you were just testing them.” We both smiled and my resentment started to soften.
My colleague went on, “You just started doing a gratitude list with your students. Maybe that student should be at the top of your gratitude list, because she is teaching you to turn problems into solutions.”
This shocked me. I thought this conversation would go in a different direction with some sympathy on our problems in the classroom. But this shock melted into a new way to look at this situation and to appreciate this student with gratitude.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
After lunch, I went back to my classroom and made an announcement.

Thank you for inviting me to talk about our Riding Club. Hope it interests you.
After breakfast the children begin a day’s program at about 10 o’clock by setting the horse ready. They need to make sure they have the right equipment before the ride begins at about 10:30. For the first few miles they go quite slowly and break for about two hours at noon, near a beach or a lake where they can swim. They arrive back at the club at about 4:00 p. m. Everyone has to wear a hard hat. Sports shoes are no good for riding, I’m afraid. Strong shoes or boots are the best. Warm clothes such as jeans and sweaters, some swimming suits and a shoulder bag for carrying the lunch are useful. In the club, we prepare many books and movies for the children. They can relax at night. And there is an excellent museum not far away in the local area. Well, at last for the price. One day’s cost is 50 dollars per person, including the riding, the equipment, the room and all food.
OK, that’s all. Are there any questions

根据第二段中“Right now, I am working in the field of Pompeii, an ancient Roman city which was destroyed and buried under 13 to 20 feet of ash and small rocks during a volcanic eruption in 79 AD. With the help of a robot, I try to carefully reconstruct (重建) the city’s 2,000-year-old broken frescoes ( 壁画 ).(现在,我正在庞贝古城工作,这是一座古罗马城市,在公元79年的一次火山爆发中被摧毁并埋在13到20英尺厚的火山灰和小岩石下。在机器人的帮助下,我试图仔细地重建这座城市有2000年历史的破碎壁画。)”可知,作者现在正在机器人的帮助下,试图仔细地重建这座城市有2000年历史的破碎壁画。即作者正在修复损坏的考古发现。故选A。
根据第三段中“Technology now allows us to do it-the robot we use is running by artificial intelligence (AI). As it examines a piece, it searches a database for a match, and then sends the data back to its hands to fit matching pieces together, saving a lot of hours. Its soft human-like arms and hands allow it to hold and examine the easily broken pieces without damaging them. The technology is likely to allow many museums around the world to reconstruct large-scale broken frescoes or similar objects in the future.(现在的技术允许我们这样做——我们使用的机器人是由人工智能(AI)运行的。
根据第四段“In RePAIR, I’m studying the hyperspectral ( 高光谱的 ) images of the fresco pieces in storage and comparing them with the paintings on the walls of the House of the Painters at Work, part of a building in Pompeii. By comparing the resemblances in the images, we will be able to work out whether the broken pieces were from the same wall.(在“修复”项目中,我正在研究储存的壁画作品的高光谱图像,并将它们与庞贝一座建筑的“在职画家之家”(House of the Painters at Work)墙壁上的画作进行比较。通过比较图像中的resemblances之处,我们将能够计算出破碎的碎片是否来自同一面墙。)”可知,在“修复”项目中,我需要把储存的壁画作品的高光谱图像和庞贝一座建筑的“在职画家之家”(House of the Painters at Work)墙壁上的画作进行比较。
根据最后一段中“Archaeology helps us understand where we come from, and technology enriches that exploration. I’m glad I’m a translator of the two worlds.

根据文章第四段“The research project, Project Neptune 100, was organized by the Key Largo-based Marine Resources Development Foundation and focused on ocean conservation research and studying how high pressure affects the human body. (这项名为“海王星100计划”的研究项目是由总部位于基拉戈的海洋资源开发基金会组织的,重点是海洋保护研究和研究高压对人体的影响。)”以及第六段“The scientist began the project with a belief that increased pressure could help humans live longer and prevent aging-related diseases, the news release said. Dituri said he hopes his underwater research will benefit the treatment of a variety of illnesses, including traumatic brain injuries. (新闻发布会上说,这位科学家开始这个项目时相信,增加压力可以帮助人类延长寿命,预防与衰老有关的疾病。Dituri说,他希望他的水下研究将有助于治疗各种疾病,包括创伤性脑损伤。)”可知,Dituri参加这个项目是为了用于科学研究。故选C。
30.细节理解题。根据文章第六段“The scientist began the project with a belief that increased pressure could help humans live longer and prevent aging-related diseases, the news release said. 【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道。文章报道了现在一家公司准备让三百多年前就已经灭绝的渡渡鸟回归。
32.细节理解题。根据第二段“A company called Colossal Biosciences, which has offices in Austin, plans to “de-extinct” the species alongside some other well-known extinct species, the woolly mammoth (长毛象) and Tasmanian tiger. According to the company, all three will be de-extinct within the next decade.(一家名为Colossal Biosciences的公司在奥斯汀设有办事处,该公司计划将这一物种与其他一些已知的灭绝物种——长毛象和塔斯马尼亚虎——一起“从灭绝中恢复”。据该公司称,这三种物种将在未来十年内复活)”可知,这家公司准备“复活”一些已经灭绝的动物物种。故选A项。
根据第三段中“When the sailors arrived there, they would walk around the island and knock the heads of the dodos because there was nothing else to do on the island. By 1692, the species was extinct.(当水手们到达那里时,他们会在岛上走来走去,敲打渡渡鸟的头,因为岛上没有别的事情可做。到1692年,这个物种灭绝了)”可知,渡渡鸟灭绝可能是由于人类因无聊而对它们猎杀造成的。故选C项。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段中Forrest Galante的话“In the case of the dodo, it will put back something at the top of the food chain. Removing the bird created a gap in the ecosystem of the environment. Recovering it, in theory, should help fill that gap. You’re bringing back a creature, an individual and a group of them that will most importantly repair a damaged ecosystem, because they’ve been removed by human beings(以渡渡鸟为例,它会把一些东西放回到食物链的顶端。把鸟移走造成了环境生态系统的缺口。从理论上讲,恢复它应该有助于填补这一空白。你带回了一种生物,一个个体和一群生物,最重要的是修复受损的生态系统,因为它们已经被人类带走了)”可推知,Forrest Galante认为“复活”渡渡鸟能修复受损的生态系统,对生态有益。故选A项。
根据第五段“Just like in Jurassic Park, DNA is required to bring back an extinct animal. DNA from species like the dodo bird and woolly mammoth can be recovered. According to Galante, this DNA is then hatched into a related species that is living today. In the case of the dodo bird, a pigeon is used. When the pigeon lays eggs, dodo birds will hatch from the eggs.(就像在《侏罗纪公园》里一样,要复活一种灭绝的动物需要DNA。渡渡鸟和长毛象等物种的DNA可以被恢复。根据加兰特的说法,这些DNA随后被孵化成一个现在还存在的相关的物种。在渡渡鸟的例子中,要用到鸽子。鸽子下蛋的时候,渡渡鸟就会从蛋里孵出来)”可知,本段主要讲述了如何利用DNA孵化渡渡鸟,从而使其再生。故选D项。
