Basically, birding involves observing birds in their natural habitat. I usually go out with a guidebook in the mornings because most birds are very active in finding food at that time. Because I’m new to birding, I use my bird guidebook to look up certain kinds of birds. I have to look carefully at their feathers, the way they behave and move and their size to recognize many birds because some look very similar. Besides looking at birds, I like the activity because it gives me a chance to exercise as I travel to different places, and it allows me to relax my mind in the great outdoors.

In Florida’s Everglades, few species are more closely tied to this place’s health than an endangered bird, the snail kite, which eats just one thing: snails. Over the last century, due to changing environments, these local snails have become hard to find, and the birds are dying out. But the number of snail kites has increased recently thanks to an unusual invasive (入侵的) snail, which is a pretty uncommon event.
Snail kites got their name from their amazing flying ability. They were one of the last bird species discovered in the U. S. because of where they live, often hidden in the Everglades. Over the past century, as many of their living places became pretty dry and water stopped running through parts of the Everglades, the snail kite population fell rapidly. It was one of the first birds put on the endangered species list in the 1960s. And by 2007, fewer than 800 had remained.
Right shortly after that this invasive snail came in, and just started flourishing and getting into every wetland. Since then, the snail kite population has been slowly increasing. By last year’s count, there are now more than 3,000 snail kites. And, although it’s early in the season, researchers are finding lots of nests with eggs and young birds.
Efforts to restore (恢复) Florida’s Everglades have also helped the snail kite, bringing back local plants and the flow of water. The restoration work has been in place for more than 30 years with a cost of more than $20 billion. But progress is slow.
Though some scientists say the invasive snail may have saved the snail kite, Professor Robert Fletcher is feeling uneasy about the possible influence the species will have on the Everglades over the long term. He says, “What we should be thinking about is how to restore local snails to get those benefits rather than depending on this invasive species that can harm the ecosystem. The snails may already have a bad effect on some local plants, and a sign trouble may be showing soon.”
24. What does the uncommon event in the first paragraph refer to
A. The snail kite’s population keeps changing.
B. The local snail kite has found a new food source.
C. An invasive snail positively influences a local species.
D. A local snail has lost its living places to an invasive snail.
25. What is the real reason behind the snail kite’s trouble
A. Their losing good flying ability. B. The absence of a protection list.
C. The appearance of an invasive snail. D. Their long-lasting dry living conditions.
26. What does the underlined word “flourishing” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Falling slowly. B. Growing rapidly. C. Changing quickly. D. Disappearing largely.
27. What do the efforts in Paragraph 4 suggest
A. The restoration work in the Everglades has stopped.
B. Bringing the Everglades to its normal condition is difficult.
C. The Everglades is facing different kinds of natural disasters.
D. Protecting the Everglades’ water is key to snail kites’ survival.
C 25. D 26. B 27. B
根据第一段“In Florida’s Everglades, few species are more closely tied to this place’s health than an endangered bird, the snail kite, which eats just one thing: snails. Over the last century, due to changing environments, these local snails have become hard to find, and the birds are dying out. But the number of snail kites has increased recently thanks to an unusual invasive (入侵的) snail, which is a pretty uncommon event.(在佛罗里达州的大沼泽地,很少有物种比一种濒临灭绝的鸟类——蜗牛鹰——与这个地方的健康关系更密切,它只吃一种东西:蜗牛。在过去的一个世纪里,由于环境的变化,这些当地的蜗牛变得很难找到,鸟类也在灭绝。但蜗牛鹰的数量最近有所增加,这要归功于一种不寻常的入侵蜗牛,这是一种相当罕见的事件)”可知,第一段中的不寻常事件指的是入侵蜗牛对当地物种有积极影响。故选C。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Over the past century, as many of their living places became pretty dry and water stopped running through parts of the Everglades, the snail kite population fell rapidly. (在过去的一个世纪里,由于它们的许多栖息地变得非常干燥,大沼泽地的部分地区停止了供水,蜗牛鹰的数量迅速下降)”可知,蜗牛鹰遇到麻烦的真正原因是他们的生活条件长期干燥。故选D。
【26题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Right shortly after that, this invasive snail came in, and just started”以及后文“Since then, the snail kite population has been slowly increasing.”
根据第四段“Efforts to restore (恢复) Florida’s Everglades have also helped the snail kite, bringing back local plants and the flow of water. The restoration work has been in place for more than 30 years with a cost of more than $20 billion. But progress is slow.(恢复佛罗里达大沼泽地的努力也帮助了蜗牛鹰,带回了当地的植物和水流。修复工作已经进行了30多年,耗资超过200亿美元。但进展缓慢)”可推知,第4段中的努力说明了将沼泽地恢复到正常状态是困难的。故选B。
C
The baguette, a long, thin French bread, is being added to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH,非物质文化遗产) list. UNESCO experts gathering in Morocco this week decided that the simple French bread — made only of flour, water, salt, and yeast — was worth U.N. recognition, after France’s culture ministry warned of a “continuous drop” in the number of traditional bakeries (烘焙坊), with some 400 closing every year over the past half century.
The UN cultural agency’s chief, Audrey Azoulay said, “The decision honors more than just bread; it recognizes the ‘graceful skills of bakers’ and ‘a daily ritual (仪式)’.” Azoulay added, “It is important that such baking knowledge and social practices can continue to exist in the future.”
With the bread’s new status (地位), the French government said it planned to create a baguette day, called the “Open Bake house Day”, to connect the French better with their heritage. Bakers in France seemed proud, if unsurprised. “Of course, it should be on the list because the baguette symbolizes the world. It’s universal,” said Asma Farhat, a baker at Julien’s Bakery. “If there’s no baguette, you can’t have a proper meal. In the morning you can toast it, for lunch it’s a sandwich, and then it accompanies dinner.”
Despite the decline in traditional bakery numbers, France’s 67 million people still buy baguettes at a variety of sales points, including in supermarkets. According to France’s “Bread Observatory”, the French eat 320 baguettes of one form or another every second. The problem is, observers say, that they can often be poor in quality. “It’s very easy to get bad baguette in France. It’s the traditional baguette from the traditional bakery that is in danger. It’s about quality not quantity,” said one local resident, Marine Fourchier.
28 Why did UNESCO’s decide to add the French bread to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list
A. Because it has a long history. B. Because it is made of simple materials.
C. Because it is in danger of disappearing. D. Because it is made in traditional bakeries.
29. What did Audrey Azoulay think of UNESCO’s decision
A. He felt honored. B. His attitude was unclear.
C. He thought it was embarrassing. D. He thought it was meaningful.
30. What can we learn from Asma Farhat’s words
A. Baguettes should be served all the day. B. Baguettes are common in the French diet.
C. Baguettes should have been put on the list earlier. D. Baguettes and sandwiches are equally important.
31. What can be a proper title for this article
A. The baguette — a cultural heritage that is of poor quality.
B. Protecting the baguette — everyone can make a difference.
C. Protecting the baguette — quality is more important than quantity.
D. The baguette — a new comer on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
C 29. D 30. B 31. D
根据第一段中“UNESCO experts gathering in Morocco this week decided that the simple French bread — made only of flour, water, salt, and yeast — was worth U.N. recognition, after France’s culture ministry warned of a “continuous drop” in the number of traditional bakeries (烘焙坊), with some 400 closing every year over the past half century. (本周,联合国教科文组织的专家们齐聚摩洛哥,认为这种简单的法式面包——仅由面粉、水、盐和酵母制成——值得联合国认可。此前,法国文化部警告称,传统面包店的数量正在“持续下降”,在过去的半个世纪里,每年大约有400家面包店倒闭)”可知,联合国教科文组织将法式长棍面包列入世界非物质文化遗产的名单之中是因为它面临消失的危险。故选C项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中Audrey Azoulay所说的话“The decision honors more than just bread; it recognizes the ‘graceful skills of bakers’ and ‘a daily ritual (仪式)’. (这一决定不仅仅是对面包的尊重;它是对‘面包师的精湛技艺’和‘日常仪式’的认可)”和“It is important that such baking knowledge and social practices can continue to exist in the future. (重要的是,这些烘焙知识和社会实践能够在未来继续存在)”可知,Audrey Azoulay认为这一决定既能体现对面包本身、面包师的技艺和其仪式感的认可,也能帮助其蕴含的烘焙知识和社会实践传承下去。由此推知,他觉得这是很有意义的。故选D项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中Asma Farhat所说的话“If there’s no baguette, you can’t have a proper meal. In the morning you can toast it, for lunch it’s a sandwich, and then it accompanies dinner.
D
We all love butterflies. Their beautiful wings attract us, and their presence lights up our garden. Well, that’s our view of butterflies, but have you ever wondered what plants think of them
The butterflies’ eggs lie on the underside of the leaves. The eggs themselves don’t damage plants. However, upon coming into contact with the eggs, the plants become oversensitive. It means that once a plant recognizes a pest, it will cause death in the contacted plant part. When these dead leaves or partial leaf parts break away from the plant, the eggs on them fall off. Along with the hypersensitivity response, plants also produce something special, which can attract animals to cat the eggs, thus preventing damage in the future.
After the baby butterflies come out of their eggs, the caterpillar (毛虫) stage begins. Most caterpillars feed on the leaves of the plants, damaging some of the plants in your own garden. Incredibly, they are major plant pests that bring about major losses to farmers. The next stage is pupa (蛹). The caterpillars begin their change into an adult. They don’t depend on the energy that the leaves provide. Finally, they become adult butterflies that have wings and move from one plant to the other. They feed on the sweet liquid produced by flowers.
While on their search for food, the butterflies carry pollen (花粉) on their body. They are key pollinators that place pollen from one flower to another in ecosystem. Plants that have flowers will create some special features to draw these pollinators’ attention. Certain plants have flowers giving off smells that can charm butterflies when they are looking for a mate. Some plants even have flat flowers to assist butterflies when landing.
Butterflies aid in pollination during their final adult stage. Thus, they change into beneficial insects to plants. This change makes butterflies an important friend of plants, despite being a hated enemy in previous life cycle stages!
32. How does a plant respond to butterflies’ eggs
A. It tries to get rid of them. B. It tries to appeal to them.
C. It grows a little better with them. D. It protects them from being eaten.
33. When do butterflies cause the greatest damage to agriculture
A. In the period of egg-laying. B. In the period of pupa.
C. In the period of caterpillar. D. In the period of adult.
34. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 4
A. Describe the process of pollination.
B. Show how flowers attract butterflies.
C. Stress the importance of pollination.
D. Explore how adult butterflies develop.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. Why do flowers need butterflies’ pollination
B. How do plants defend themselves from pests
C. Are butterflies’ life cycles similar to the plants’
D. Are butterflies beneficial or harmful to plants
A 33. C 34. B 35. D

根据上文“Four Tips to Stay Safe During a Heat Wave Very hot temperatures have been breaking records during the summer across USA. But it’s not just in the USA heat wave in June set new record highs. So what is a human to do (夏天,美国各地的高温不断打破记录。但不仅仅是在美国,6月份的热浪也创下了历史新高。那么人类该怎么做呢?)”以及下文主要介绍了在高温热浪中保证安全的四条建议。故C选项“这里有四条关于热浪的安全提示,可以帮助你应对危险”符合语境,故选C项。
【37题详解】
根据上文“During a heat wave, you have to dress properly. Clothing like loose and light-colored clothes are best if you have to work or be outside.(在热浪中,你必须穿着得体。
根据后文“If that’s not possible, try to go to a public place like a library, mall or a movie theater. Many cities will open up shelters during heat waves to provide citizens with relief, especially in areas where air conditioning (空调设备) isn’t widely used.(如果这是不可能的,试着去公共场所,如图书馆,商场或电影院。许多城市将在热浪期间开放避难所,为市民提供缓解,特别是在空调未被广泛使用的地区)”可知,后文提到了某种情况不可能得话,就去公共场所,可知本句是在说明这种情况是什么。故E选项“热浪来袭时,你最好呆在有空调的室内”符合语境,故选E项。
【40题详解】
根据本段内容“Heat-related illness can affect anyone, but some people are particularly at risk. If you live with, or know people, like young kids, the sick or elderly, overweight people, outside workers, check on them frequently during a heat wave. We should monitor those at risk at least twice a day for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, and babies and young children, even more frequently.(与热有关的疾病可以影响任何人,但有些人尤其危险。

When I looked closely at the face of my 23-year-old son, Brian, in the doorway, we were saying goodbye. In a few hours he would be flying to France. It was a transitional (过渡的) time in Brian’s life, a passage from college into the adult world. I wanted to leave him some words that would have some meaning, some significance beyond the moment. But nothing came from my lips.
No sound broke the stillness of my beachside home. I stood frozen and quiet, looking into the searching eyes of my son, which I knew was not the first time I had let such a moment pass.
When Brian was five, I took him to the school bus stop on his first day of kindergarten. I felt the tension in his hand holding mine as the bus turned the corner. I saw color flush (发红) his cheeks as the bus pulled up. He looked at me—as he did now. “What is it going to be like, Dad Can I do it Will I be OK ” Then he walked up the bus steps and disappeared inside. The bus drove away, and I said nothing.
A decade later, a similar scene played itself out. I drove him to college in Virginia. As I started to make the trip home, I tried to think of something to say to give him courage and confidence as he started this new phase of life. I left, only mumbling (咕哝) “Hope you feel better, Brian.”
I once told Brian about my great regret that I didn’t take a year off to travel. Brian thought about this. After graduation, he worked as a waiter, a bike messenger and a painter. Now he had enough money for Paris. The night before he left, I tossed and turned (辗转难眠) in bed. I was trying to figure out something to say. Nothing came. Maybe it wasn’t necessary to say anything.
How many times have we all let such moments pass What does it matter over the course of a lifetime if a father never tells a son what he really thinks of him
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
But as I stood before Brian, I knew that it does matter.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hearing this, Brian came toward me and threw his arms around me.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But as I stood before Brian, I knew that it does matter. These moments are precious, and they should not be wasted. I took a deep breath and looked my son in the eye. “Brian, I’m proud of you,” I said. “You’ve grown into a remarkable young man, and I know you’re going to do great things in life. I love you, and I’ll always be here for you, no matter what happens.”
Hearing this, Brian came toward me and threw his arms around me. We hugged for a long time, neither of us wanting to let go. “Thanks, Dad,” he said. “That means a lot to me.” I felt a sense of relief wash over me. I had finally taken the opportunity to tell my son how I felt, and I knew it was a moment we would both treasure forever. As Brian left for France, I knew he would take those words with him wherever he went. And I hoped that, one day, he would have the chance to pass on that same message to his own son. Because in the end, it’s the little things that matter most — the words we say, the moments we share, and the love that we give.

Right shortly after that, this invasive snail came in, and just started flourishing and getting into every wetland.

B. Bringing the Everglades to its normal condition is difficult.
C. The Everglades is facing different kinds of natural disasters.
D. Protecting the Everglades’ water is key to snail kites’ survival.

The UN cultural agency’s chief Audrey Azoulay said, “The decision honors more than just bread; it recognizes the ‘graceful skills of bakers’ and ‘a daily ritual (仪式)’.” Azoulay added, “It is important that such baking knowledge and social practices can continue to exist in the future.”
28. Why did UNESCO’s decide to add the French bread to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list

How many times have we all let such moments pass What does it matter over the course of a lifetime if a father never tells a son what he really thinks of him
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
But as I stood before Brian, I knew that it does matter.
