My First Marathon(马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was "not athletic".
The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a "marathon winner".
4. A month before the marathon, the author ____________.
A. was well trained B. felt scared
C. made up his mind to run D. lost hope
5. Why did the author mention the P.E. class in his 7th year
A. To acknowledge the support of his teacher.
B To amuse the readers with a funny story.
C. To show he was not talented in sports.
D. To share a precious memory.
6. How was the author’s first marathon
A. He made it. B. He quit halfway.
C. He got the first prize. D. He walked to the end.
7. What does the story mainly tell us
A. A man owes his success to his family support.
B. A winner is one with a great effort of will.
C. Failure is the mother of success.
D. One is never too old to learn.

It has long been known that plants communicate when they are stressed. You need only observe a houseplant to realize that a plant wilts (枯萎) when it needs water. Some plants may also emit a terrible taste to prevent some insects from hurting them.
Now, a new study that was conducted by researchers at Tel Aviv University, shows that not only do plants express themselves in the above ways when stressed, they also make sounds, like talking.
According to the researchers, plants make sounds at frequencies (频率) between 40 to 80 KHZ — out of the range of human ears — but within the range of some animals. “Bats make sounds in these ranges all the time, and mice, dogs and cats can partially hear within it,” Dr. Lilach Hadany, a Professor at Tel Aviv University, and one of the authors of the study said.
One of the primary breakthroughs (突破) of Hadany’s study is that the researchers have managed to understand and classify the sounds that plants make for the first time. Plants that are not stressed make about one noise per hour, but plants that are stressed or injured make many hundreds of sounds per hour. And each of these sounds seemed to be specific to the type of stress the plant was under.
This type of information could be important for agriculture. Knowing what sounds their plants are making could help farmers determine whether their crops are in danger of drought or disease and allow them to make the necessary changes to help their plants.
Amazingly enough, the researchers are not actually sure how the plants make sounds. But anyway, the discovery is still a game-changer for plant science, and potentially for the future of agriculture. One day soon your plants may be able to tell you if they are hungry, thirsty, or just feeling lonely.

C. Clear up. D. Take in.
9. Which of the following is most likely to hear plants talk
A. Humans. B. Bats.
C. Mice. D. Dogs.
10. What is the breakthrough of Hadany’s study
A. They’ve found plants can communicate with each other.
B. They’ve used plants’ sounds to improve agriculture.
C. They can understand and classify plants’ sounds.
D. They’ve discovered how plants make sounds.
11. What can be a best title for the text
A Scientists Discover the Language of Plants
B. Animals Understand Plants’ Language
C. Plants Communicate in Various Ways
D. Stress Makes Plants Talk

Research shows that isolation (隔绝) is bad for us and associated with certain diseases including depression, high blood pressure and heart disease. Yet teenagers seek isolation by using the device of our times-a screen, screens of all kinds. However, in whatever form, screens are addictive, and addictive from an early age. Research has shown that given the chance, six-month-old babies prefer screens to real human faces.
Hand in hand with this addiction to screens, we are seeing an explosion of teenage mental health problems. Social media claims to be inclusive (包容), keeping you connected. But it’s not. It isolates you from real people. Screens have even been described as being poisonous for teenagers.
Psychologist Jean Twenge, a professor at San Diego State University, believes today’s teenagers are “on the edge” of a major mental health crisis and requests, “do anything that doesn’t involve a screen”. The problem is, she claims, children born between 1995 and 2012 have grown up with a smart phone in their hands, and it has changed so many aspects of their lives. The number of teenagers who actually see their friends frequently has dropped by more than 40% since 2000. In 2015, only 56% of 17-year-old went on a date, down from 85%. Modern teenagers are slower to learn to drive, or earn money and spend more time at home. They’re “on their phone, in their room, alone and often depressed”, she says.
Some critics (评论家), however, say we should encourage our children to spend more time online. Robert Hannigan, former director of GCHQ, said in August that Britain is badly short of engineers and computer scientists, and urged children to develop cyber skill to compete in the digital economy.
I’m not the first to say that social media is inferior to real human contact, and harms mental health. Studies show teens who spend three hours a day online are 35% more likely to suicide (自杀). The suicide rate among girls aged 12 to 14 has more than doubled in a decade.
12. Why does Jean Twenge call on teens to surf online less
A. Social media is inclusive and keeps them connected.
B. Social media has changed every aspect of their lives.
C. Social media does great harm to their eyesight.
D. Social media is addictive and leads to mental problems.
13. Robert Hannigan may agree that we should ___________.
A. allow teens to isolate themselves from real social contact
B. call on teens to do anything that doesn’t involve a screen
C. urge children to contact people face to face instead of online
D. encourage children to spend more time on the Internet
14. Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude towards social media
A. Opposed. B. Supportive. C. Unclear. D. Objective.
15. What may be the best title for the text
A. Teenagers seeking isolation using screens B. Social media causing teenagers mental problems
C. Teenagers’ heavy addiction to social media D. Different opinions on surfing online

Jonathan had been wandering on the streets for almost a whole day after angrily running away from his home in the morning. Thinking of his quarrel with his mother for his study, he still felt depressed and hopeless.
It was freezing and snowing at dusk on such a winter day. He was walking down an empty set where there were no passers-by, because people must have locked themselves at home for warmth. Jonathan was walking to a crossroads when suddenly he encountered a little boy stuck in the middle of the road alone like him.
Jonathan had meant to turn a blind eye to him at first. But the boy’s sad crying and the worry that he might be hit by cars made Jonathan just not walk away. He approached, asking worriedly, “How did you come here What’s your name ”
“I’m Leo. I was playing with my cat. He ran away, and I ran after him for a long distance. But when I turned back home, I lost my way,” cried the boy. Feeling pity for the boy, Jonathan decided that he couldn’t leave the little boy alone here. With no cellphone and considering the police station was far from here, Jonathan decided to help him first.
He took him to different neighborhoods, aiming to look for his home. But things didn’t go that smoothly as he had expected. It was getting darker, and Jonathan thought he had to find Leo’s home. He knocked on every door, noneffective. It was snowing more heavily, and he removed his coat and put it around Leo.
Paragraph 1: Suddenly, a police car was drawing, and Jonathan waved with excitement to it.

6. How was the author’s first marathon
A. He made it. B. He quit halfway.

8. What does the underlined word “emit” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Give off. B. Add to.
C. Clear up. D. Take in.
A. Scientists Discover the Language of Plants
B. Animals Understand Plants’ Language
C. Plants Communicate in Various Ways
D. Stress Makes Plants Talk
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. C 11. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了科学家发现了植物会因为受到压力或伤害而发出声音的现象。
【详解】1. 词句猜测题。根据第一段画线单词所在句子“Some plants may also emit a terrible taste to prevent some insects from hurting them”(有些植物也可能emit可怕的味道,以防止一些昆虫伤害它们。)可知,植物“emit terrible taste”的行为的目的是防止某些昆虫伤害它们,而前文又提到这是它们“communicate(交流)”的一种例子,由此推断它们会释放这种不好的味道,和give off“散发出”意思一样。故选A项。
2. 细节理解题。根据第三段“plants make sounds at frequencies (频率) between 40 to 80 KHZ — out of the range of human ears — but within the range of some animals. ‘Bats make sounds in these ranges all the time...’”(植物发出声音的频率在40到80千赫之间,超出了人类的听觉范围,但在某些动物的听觉范围之内。“蝙蝠总是在这些范围内发出声音”)可知,bats发出的声音频率范围与植物一致,因此它们最有可能听到植物发出的声音。故选B项。
3. 细节理解题。根据第四段“One of the primary breakthroughs (突破) of Hadany’s study is that the researchers have managed to understand and classify the sounds that plants make for the first time.”(哈达尼研究的主要突破之一是,研究人员首次理解并分类了植物发出的声音。)可知,目前Hadany团队的研究突破在于他们第一次理解并分类了植物发出的声音。故选C项。
4. 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“Now, a new study that was conducted by researchers at Tel Aviv University, shows that not only do plants express themselves in the above ways when stressed, they also make sounds, like talking.”(现在,一项由特拉维夫大学研究人员进行的新研究表明,当受到压力时,植物不仅会以上述方式表达自己,它们还会发出声音,比如说说话。)可知,本文主要介绍了科学家Hadany的研究团队的最新研究成果——植物能够因为各种原因而发出声音,A项“ 科学家发现植物的语言”适合做文章标题。故选A项。
D
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. A 15. A

【答案】范文
Suddenly, a police car was drawing, and Jonathan waved with excitement to it. To his relief, the police car pulled up and two policemen got off. Jonathan couldn’t wait to explain what had happened to Leo. Then, the policemen checked for any missing person’s report without any delay, but found none. Having no choice, they drove the two of them around the nearby to continue searching for Leo’s home. Finally, they made it to contact the boy’s parents. Jonathan was more than glad to witness Leo’s reunion with his parents.
Seeing Leo and his parents off, Jonathan was lost in thought. Recalling how anxious Leo’s parents were and how joyful the boy was to see his parents again just now, Jonathan was deeply touched. He thought his parents must be as worried as Leo’s. Or maybe they were anxiously searching the world for their son right now. He grew guilty for ignoring his parents’ love for him and for what he had done today. All his anger dying away in an instant, he rushed in the direction of his home.
