I have three kids and a great husband and I’m enjoying a career that I find challenging and fun. To the outside world, this feels like “success”. But there is still a voice in my heart asking if this is who I truly am. Only in silence do I hear the self and wonder who that person might be.
So I booked a trip to find out. I travelled, for the first time, without my husband or kids. I went to Iceland with a friend, who shares appreciation of wilderness and silence.
For six days, we were immersed (沉浸) in wild, raw scenery and real weather—all kinds of weather. Climbing a mountain against rain and returning to a tent for a simple meal remind you how little you actually need, and how strong it feels to be uncomfortable sometimes.
I found silence in Iceland, and time to consider the “me” outside of career and the “me” outside of kids as I shared stories with strangers.
When I stopped talking and just listened, I became more generous. I learned that choosing to be generous could create more space, more food and more warmth.
But I didn’t really gain any better appreciation of what I want from life or my job. I suspect the anxiety that drove me to seek silence in Iceland was losing sight of my ability to choose gratitude and joy, and to be present in the challenges I set in my career and my family.
I came home to noise, rush and love, with no less confusion about who I want to be. I know the answer isn’t waiting out there on the top of a mountain in Iceland. The answer is in front of me with every step on my own life’s path, and in every choice I make.
24. Why did the author take a trip to Iceland
A. To gain a new experience. B. To better understand herself.
C. To enjoy family happiness. D. To appreciate natural beauty.
25. What do we learn about the author’s trip
A. Exciting. B. Enjoyable. C. Difficult. D. Adventurous.
26. What change happened to the author
A. She became more caring. B. She felt more anxious.
C. She felt lonelier. D. She became less confident.
27. What will the author do in the future
A. Go back to nature. B. Pay less attention to her feelings.
C. Travel to Iceland more often. D. Face reality bravely.

We’ve all heard it: There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. When it’s icy outside, you may be trying to grab the thickest and heaviest jumper to stay warm. But those in the know wear a series of layers in cold weather, known as “the layering system”. This is because wearing multiple thin layers will keep you warmer than a single thicker layer.
The secret of “the layering system” exists in what we cannot see: air. Surprisingly, air is a great insulator (绝缘体) . When we layer clothes on top of each other, we are trapping air between the layers. Our body heat then warms the air and the layers keep that cozy space contained next to our skin. That’s why you get hotter as your physical movement increases—you’re creating more body heat that sits next to your skin.
Think of your layering system as a sandwich instead of bread, meat, and vegetables, we’re looking at three layering components: a base layer, amid layer, and an outer layer. The base layer is very important as it helps move sweat away from your skin quickly, keeping it dry and trapping warm air against your body. Choose natural fibers like wool or bamboo, or synthetic materials such as nylon and polyester, but cotton is not recommended because it holds onto moisture (水分) and makes you feel wet and cold. The mid layer’s role is to trap body heat, so fleece, wool, and down are all good choices. The outer layer acts as a barrier, shielding the body from moisture and wind, which is why jackets and snowsuits are perfect choices. Moreover, don’t forget to choose appropriate footwear, as well as a hat and scarf, for additional protection.
In conclusion, layering your clothes is a science. By understanding the layering system and choosing appropriate clothing, one can stay warm and comfortable even in the coldest weather.
28. How does “the layering system” help people keep warm
A. By absorbin g sunlight to heat the air. B. By trapping body heat between the layers.
C By keeping out the cold wind completely. D. By covering the skin to warm the body.
29. Which material should be avoided as a base layer
A. Wool. B. Nylon. C. Bamboo. D. Cotton.
30 What is the function of the outer layer of the clothing
A. Preventing any injuries from your enemy. B. Moving sweat away from your skin quickly.
C. Protecting the body from moisture and wind. D. Trapping body heat to shield the body from wind.
31. What is the purpose of the passage
A. To introduce a way to keep warm in winter. B. To recommend some warm clothes for people.
C. To stress the importance of clothing materials. D. To show a new fashion trend in winter.
D
Geologists have long been fascinated by a missing piece of Earth’s history — a lost continent called Argoland. Around 155 million years ago, the 5,000-kilometer continent broke off from Western Australia and began drifting(漂移), leaving behind a basin deep below the ocean known as the Argo Abyssal Plain. But where did Argoland actually go
The seabed structure suggests that the continent drifted northwestward and ended up Southeast Asia. But surprisingly, there is no large continent hidden beneath those islands, only small continental fragments(碎片) surrounded by ancient oceanic basins. Using this theory, geologists at Utrecht University discovered that Argoland hadn’t really disappeared but survived as a “very extended and fragmented collection” under the islands to the east of Indonesia.
Unlike other continents like Africa and South America, which broke neatly into two pieces, Argoland split into many smaller fragments that were dispersed, which made it difficult for scientists to locate and study the continent’s geological features. However, with advanced technology and the discovery, scientists can now piece them together.
Tracing the continents is vital for understanding processes like the evolution of biodiversity. It could help explain something known as the mysterious Wallace line, which is an imaginary boundary that separates mammals, birds, and even early human species in Southeast Asian islands. The boundary has puzzled scientists because of how clearly it separates the island’s wildlife. To the west of the line are placental mammals like apes and elephants. But these are almost completely absent to the east, where you can find marsupials and cockatoos — animals typically associated with Australia. Researchers have theorized that this may be because Argoland carried its own wildlife away from Australia before it crashed into Southeast Asia, which helps explain why different species are found in different nations.
The story of Argoland is not one of complete disappearance but of transformation. As the world continues to evolve, this lost continent serves as a powerful symbol of the fragility of life on this planet, and a reminder of the importance of respecting and protecting the world that we live in.
32. What do we know about Argoland
A. It split into two pieces many years ago.
B. It broke away from the continent of Africa.
C. It sank to the bottom of the Argo Abyssal Plain.
D. It exists as fragments under the eastern islands of Indonesia.
33. What does the underlined word “dispersed” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Crashed. B. Connected. C. Distributed. D. Disappeared.
34. Why does the author mention the “Wallace line” in paragraph 4
A. To introduce the early history of Argoland.
B. To stress the significance of tracing Argoland.
C. To prove the biodiversity of Southeast Asian islands.
D. To explain the evolutionary process of Australian species.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. The Discovery of a Lost Continent B. The Boundaries of Wildlife Habitats

When I was twelve, my parents let me babysit for Mr. and Mrs. Joseph who lived down the street with their two little preschool girls. Most of my babysitting occurred during daylight hours while Mrs. Joseph went shopping. One day she asked if I could stay with her daughters in the evening, promising she and her husband would be home by ten p. m. After pleaded with (恳求) them, desperate to earn fifty cents an hour for six hours—three whole dollars!—my parents agreed.
At four o'clock, I knocked on the Josephs' front door, greeted the kids, and received detailed instructions from their mother. A few minutes later, the girls and I were alone. We played hide-and-seek, did some finger painting together, and I fixed them scrambled eggs (炒鸡蛋) and toast soldiers for dinner. Then, at about eight p, m., I gathered the two kids beside me on the sofa and began to read them a story.
I heard a soft click, as if the front door had been opened, and I stopped. “Go on,” said Melanie, the four-year-old. “Keep reading.” “Wait.” I put my finger to my lips, “I thought I heard someone come in.” I heard the click again, and the lamp beside me switched on. All three of us jumped. Then the drapes (帘子) closed across the big window.
I screamed, put a little girl under each of my arms, and ran upstairs to the bathroom. As I locked the door behind us, I heard music begin to play from a radio somewhere downstairs. The girls clutched (紧紧抱住) each other in fear as I calmed them down, saying, “There's a bad man in the house. You have to be perfectly quiet. ”
The three of us sat on the floor, ears pressed to the wooden door ... listening. Even two-year-old Tricia was very quiet. For two hours we listened to the music playing, but we never heard another sound. No footsteps, no creaking (嘎吱作响的) doors, or breaking of china. Definitely no one walking up the stairs.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;

Think of your layering system as a sandwich, instead of bread, meat, and vegetables, we’re looking at three layering components: a base layer, amid layer, and an outer layer.
A. Wool. B. Nylon. C. Bamboo. D. Cotton.
30. What is the function of the outer layer of the clothing
B 29. D 30. C 31. A

根据第二段“Surprisingly, air is a great insulator(绝缘体) . When we layer clothes on top of each other, we are trapping air between the layers. Our body heat then warms the air and the layers keep that cozy space contained next to our skin. That’s why you get hotter as your physical movement increases—you’re creating more body heat that sits next to your skin.(令人惊讶的是,空气是很好的绝缘体。当我们把衣服一层一层地叠在一起时,层与层之间的空气就被困住了。然后,我们的体温使空气变暖,这些层将舒适的空间包含在我们的皮肤附近。这就是为什么当你的身体运动增加时,你会变得更热——你在皮肤附近产生了更多的身体热量)”可知,分层穿衣法是通过衣服的分层叠加困住热量来帮助人们保暖的。故选B项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The base layer is very important as it helps move sweat away from your skin quickly, keeping it dry and trapping warm air against your body. Choose natural fibers like wool or bamboo, or synthetic materials such as nylon and polyester, but cotton is not recommended because it holds onto moisture(水分) and makes you feel wet and cold.(穿衣的最里层非常重要,因为它能够帮助你快速排出皮肤上的汗水,保持皮肤干燥,并且困住你身体周围的温暖空气。你可以选择天然纤维,如羊毛或竹纤维;也可以选择合成材料,如尼龙和涤纶。但不建议你穿棉质衣物,因为棉质衣物会吸收水分,让你感到潮湿和寒冷)”可知,最里层的衣服应当避免选择棉质面料。故选D项。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The outer layer acts as a barrier, shielding the body from moisture and wind, which is why jackets and snowsuits are perfect choices.(外套起到屏障的作用,保护身体免受湿气和风的侵袭,这就是为什么夹克和防雪服是完美的选择)”可知,最外层衣物的作用是保护身体不受潮和不受风。故选C项。

It could help explain something known as the mysterious Wallace line which is an imaginary boundary that separates mammals, birds, and even early human species in Southeast Asian islands.
C. The Geological Features of Argoland D. The Formation of the Argo Abyssal Plain
D 33. C 34. B 35. A
根据第二段“Using this theory, geologists at Utrecht University discovered that Argoland hadn’t really disappeared but survived as a “very extended and fragmented collection” under the islands to the east of Indonesia.(利用这一理论,乌特勒支大学的地质学家发现,阿尔戈大陆并没有真正消失,而是作为一个“非常广泛并分散的集合体”存在于印度尼西亚东部的岛屿下方)”可知,阿尔戈大陆是以碎片的形式存在于印度尼西亚东部岛屿之下。
根据画线词上文“Unlike other continents like Africa and South America, which broke neatly into two pieces, Argoland split into many smaller fragments”可知,阿尔戈大陆不像非洲和南美洲那样是整齐地分裂成两部分,阿尔戈兰大陆分裂成许多较小的碎片,再结合画线词下文“which made it difficult for scientists to locate and study the continent’s geological features”可知,这使得科学家很难确定它的位置并研究它的地质特征。
根据第四段“Tracing the continents is vital for understanding processes like the evolution of biodiversity. Researchers have theorized that this may be because Argoland carried its own wildlife away from Australia before it crashed into Southeast Asia, which helps explain why different species are found in different nations.(追溯大陆的变迁对于我们理解生物多样性的发展过程至关重要。
根据第一段“Geologists have long been fascinated by a missing piece of Earth’s history — a lost continent called Argoland. Around 155 million years ago, the 5,000-kilometer continent broke off from Western Australia and began drifting(漂移), leaving behind a basin deep below the ocean known as the Argo Abyssal Plain. But where did Argoland actually go

Dear schoolmates,
Nowadays, most students don’t do sports for kinds of reasons. They think that it is a waste of time and we may get injured in the process.
In my opinion, it is very necessary for us to take part in sports activities. First, by doing some sports, like playing football, pingpong and so on, we can relax ourselves from concentrating a long time in class. There is no doubt that when we get back to study, we can study better. Second, doing sports is good for our health, so we will be unlikely to fall ill. Third, doing sports can help us form a new hobby, like swimming, hiking and so on. In this way, our life will be more colorful.
In all, we can benefit a lot from doing exercises.
Yours sincerely,
Zhang Hua

Then the front door opened with a bang and we all jumped. Both girls leaped into my arms and the three of us trembled until we heard Mrs. Joseph call, “Peggy Where are you ” Melanie and Tricia and I burst out of the bathroom and ran downstairs. The girls threw themselves against their astonished parents' legs, talking about “bad men in the house.” In the middle of my explanation, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph exchanged a look and began laughing.
Mr. Joseph explained he had bought a smart home device. It could close the electric drapes and turn on a light and a radio at sunset on nights when they went out. “I guess I just switched it on automatically when we left tonight. In all honesty, I don't even remember doing it,”he explained Mr. Joseph walked me to my house. He apologized and handed me not just three dollars, but five. “Good night,” I said as he turned to walk home, “and thanks.” Now I was so happy. I not only made more money, but experienced a smart home in person.
