But instead of closing down the operation, officials decided to help. “We helped Jaequan become permitted and went through some food safety techniques and procedures with him so he could operate legally and safely,” said Minneapolis Health Department supervisor Ryan Krick. Besides, the staff of health department raised the money for his permit fee, which was $87.00. Daniel Huff, the environmental health director for the department, says his agency was excited to give him coaching for some business knowledge, instead of shutting down the operation.Jaequan says he is supported widely. “I was actually kind of surprised at first, because usually I would have one person at a time help me, but then so many people came at once. Now I realize how much people enjoy it, ” he added.Jaequan began operating with a license on Monday. He started the hot dog stand with help from his uncle, who said Jaequan handles about 90 percent of the business. The teen now works four—hour days, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and spends his free time “thinking about what’s next.” Maybe a food cart, so he can take his operation on the road.Jaequan said he’s also thinking about donating some of earnings to charities that help people with depression.41. Sometimes you will meet fair weather (晴天) friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend I look for certain qualities of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability .Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries, to think of ways to be helpful. He is, also a good listener. At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults in others. He notices their good points. In short, good friends will be honest to each other and accept each other.Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favour, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humour, too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I’ve found a friend!46. If you have fair weather friends, what will happen to you A. You will become rich.B. You can be sure that you get real friends.C. You will be refused when you get into trouble.D. They will give you all that they have when you need help.47. Which is the most important the writer thinks in choosing a friend A. Honesty. B. Reliability. C. Understanding. D. A sense of humour.48. What does the underlined word “down” in Paragraph 1 mean A. Cloudy. B. Unusual. C. Unhappy. D. Pleased.49. What will a good friend do A. He will look for faults in others. B. He will do his best to help me.C He likes to laugh at me. D. He is funny.50. What does this passage mainly talk about A the qualities of a friend B. where to choose friendsC. how to get along with friends D. the importance of having a friendDPlaying a musical instrument throughout: your life protects your hearing in old age, a Canadian study suggests. The study, published in Psychology and Aging, carried out hearing tests on 74 adult musicians and 89 non-musicians. It found a 70-year-old musician’s hearing was as good as that of a 50-year-old who did not play.Hearing normally declines as people age. By 60, 10-30% of people have moderate hearing loss. By 80, that goes up to as many as 60%. Problems are particularly seen in the central auditory (听觉的) processing system, which is associated with understanding speech, especially when there is background noise.Previous studies have shown musicians have better hearing than non-players. But this research, by a team at the Rotman Research Institute in Toronto, looked at adults of all ages - from 18 to 91 - to see how people were affected as they aged. They carried out hearing tests on 74 amateur and professional musicians (who had played since the age of 16, were still practising and had been given formal music lessons) and 89 non-musicians (who had never played an instrument). Musicians were significantly better at picking out speech against noise. The researchers suggest that lifelong musicianship reduces age-related changes in the brain, probably due to musicians using their auditory systems at a high level on a regular basis. The head of biomedical research at Action on Hearing Loss, Dr Ralph Holme, said: “While this study suggests that musicians might be more able to cope with the consequences of hearing loss, it is far better to reduce damage in the first place by using appropriate ear protection. We have always campaingned for everyone who plays a musical instrument or listens to loud music to wear hearing protection, like earplugs, which reduce the risk of damaging your hearing permanently.”51. What can we learn from Paragraph 2 A. A person aged 80 will lose 30% hearing.B. A person aged above 60 must have bad hearing.C. People have fewer problems with background noise.D. People’s hearing usually becomes worse when they get older.52. What can we get from the Canadian study A. It tested the hearing of 162 people.B. The finding of the study wasn’t published publicly.C. Playing a musical instrument may do good to hearing.D. Musicians were as good at picking out speech against noise as non-musicians.53. Why don’t musicians change much in their brain as they age A. They like to take more exercise.B. They use their hearing more and regularly.C. They don’t expose themselves to background noise.D. They pay more attention to protecting their hearing.54. How can we deal with hearing loss according to Dr Ralph Holme A. Get help from musicians.B. Listen to loud music less.C. Protect hearing properly.D. Play a musical instrument more.55. The author wrote the passage to ________.A. entertain the readersB. advertise a musical instrumentC. complain about people’s hearing lossD. inform readers of a research on hearing第II卷(非选择题共35分)第四部分: 写作(共两节, 满分 35分)第一节: 阅读表达(共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10分)阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。In March 2019, when Sara Cook first got a letter in the mail telling her that someone had paid off a large amount of her medical debt, she simply couldn't believe it. Cautiously, she called the number listed on the letter. What she learned was that this was not a scam. It was 100 percent real.A remarkable nonprofit called RIP Medical Debt had indeed paid $5,000 toward her bills. The organization didn't take care of all the debt she'd accumulated from several back surgeries, but the former nurse was still moved by the gesture. “I felt really loved and blessed,” she says, “knowing that complete strangers just did that out of the goodness of their hearts.Craig Antico and Jerry Ashton do have good hearts. They're also former collection agents who have seen how heavy health-related debt has destroyed lives. “I never thought about all the hardship of the people who couldn't pay. Now I'm trying to find the people who need help.” said Antico. They got their money from individuals and charities that support RIP's mission.RIP researches potential receivers based on three criteria. First, they look for people who make no more than two and a half times the amount established as the federal poverty level. Then they screen for those whose debt is equal to 5 percent or more of the gross income (总收入). Third, they look to see whether a person can pay off debts. For the people who do qualify, RIP's help is life-changing. “After their letter, I realized that my life really wasn't so hard,” says Cook, “I may never be able to work as a nurse again but I can sit at the school library and help kids read or serve up food in the soup kitchen. When people do something out of the kindness of their hearts, sometimes they may wonder: Does it really make a difference I want people to know that this has a positive impact.”56. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. B 54. C 55. D【解析】【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了一项新的研究表明,听力会随着年龄而衰退,所以我们要正确地保护听力。【51题详解】细节理解题。根据第二段“Hearing normally declines as people age.(听力通常随着年龄的增长而下降。)”可知,人们的听力通常会随着年龄的增长而变得更糟。故选D。【52题详解】细节理解题。根据第一段中“Playing a musical instrument throughout: your life protects your hearing in old age, a Canadian study suggests.(一项加拿大的研究表明,一直演奏一种乐器可以保护老年人的听力。)”可知,演奏一种乐器有利于保护听力。故选C。【53题详解】细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“The researchers suggest that lifelong musicianship reduces age-related changes in the brain, probably due to musicians using their auditory systems at a high level on a regular basis.(研究人员认为,终身的音乐会减少大脑中与年龄有关的变化,这可能是由于音乐家经常使用他们的听觉系统,使其保持在一个较高的水平。)”可知,音乐家的大脑没有随着年龄变老而改变是因为他们经常使用他们的听力。故选B。【54题详解】细节理解题。根据最后一段中“it is far better to reduce damage in the first place by using appropriate ear protection. We have always campaingned for everyone who plays a musical instrument or listens to loud music to wear hearing protection, like earplugs, which reduce the risk of damaging your hearing permanently.(最好是首先使用适当的耳朵保护措施来减少损伤。我们一直呼吁每一个会演奏乐器或听吵闹音乐的人戴上耳塞之类的听力保护装置,这样可以减少永久性损伤听力的风险。)”可知,Ralph Holme博士认为,要正确地保护听力,这样能减少听力损失。故选C。【55题详解】推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第三段中“But this research, by a team at the Rotman Research Institute in Toronto, looked at adults of all ages - from 18 to 91 - to see how people were affected as they aged. (但多伦多罗特曼研究所的一个研究小组对18岁至91岁的所有年龄段的成年人进行了研究,以了解人们在变老时受到的影响。)和倒数第二段“The researchers suggest that lifelong musicianship reduces age-related changes in the brain, probably due to musicians using their auditory systems at a high level on a regular basis.(研究人员认为,终身的音乐会减少大脑中与年龄有关的变化,这可能是由于音乐家经常使用他们的听觉系统在一个较高的水平。)”可知,本文主要讲述了一项新的研究表明,听力会随着年龄而衰退,所以我们要正确地保护听力。由此可推知,文章的写作目的是告知读者关于听力的一项研究,故选D。第II卷(非选择题共35分)第四部分: 写作(共两节, 满分 35分)第一节: 阅读表达(共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10分)阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。In March 2019, when Sara Cook first got a letter in the mail telling her that someone had paid off a large amount of her medical debt, she simply couldn't believe it. What does the underlined word in Para.1 most probably mean (1 word)57. What was Sara Cook's reaction to RIP Medical Debt (no more than 2 words)58. How did RIP Medical Debt get funds (no more than 10 words)59. What's the main idea of the 4th paragraph (no more than 8 words)60. What's your example of doing "kindness" Please share. (no more than 20 words)【答案】56. Trick.57. Being moved.58. They got their money from individuals and charities.59. RIP researches potential receivers based on three criteria.60. I regularly donate some old clothes and books to the poor children to make their life improved a little.【解析】【分析】这是一篇新闻报道。文章通过报道Sara Cook发现自己的医疗债务都被叫做RIP Medical Debt的非盈利组织偿还了这件事来介绍了这个组织。【56题详解】词句猜测题。根据第一段最后一句“It was 100 percent real. (这百分百是真的)”可知,此处是指这不是一个骗局。所以scam的意思是“骗局”,和名词trick同义。故答案为Trick.【57题详解】细节理解题。根据第二段第二句“The organization didn't take care of all the debt she'd accumulated from several back surgeries, but the former nurse was still moved by the gesture. (该组织并不在意她因几次背部手术而积累的所有债务,但这位前护士仍然被这个举动感动了)”可知,Sara Cook对RIP Medical Debt的反应是很感动。根据“What was Sara Cook's reaction to RIP Medical Debt ”中what做主语可知,此处可用动名词作主语回答问题。故答案为Being moved.【58题详解】细节理解题。根据第三段最后一句“They got their money from individuals and charities that support RIP's mission. (他们的钱来自支持瑞普使命的个人和慈善机构)”可知,RIP Medical Debt通过支持瑞普使命的个人和慈善机构捐钱来获得资金。因为字数不能超过10个单词,故答案为They got their money from individuals and charities.【59题详解】主旨大意题。根据第四段后三句“First, they look for people who make no more than two and a half times the amount established as the federal poverty level. Then they screen for those whose debt is equal to 5 percent or more of the gross income (总收入). Third, they look to see whether a person can pay off debts. (首先,他们寻找的是那些收入不超过联邦贫困线2.5倍的人。然后他们会筛选那些债务等于或超过总收入5%的人。第三,他们看一个人是否能还清债务)”可知,本段主要是讲RIP寻找潜在受帮助者的标准,所以第一句“RIP researches potential receivers based on three criteria. (RIP对潜在受帮助者的调查基于三个标准) ”是段落中心句,且字数不超过8个单词。故答案为RIP researches potential receivers based on three criteria.【60题详解】开放性题目。 Dear Peter,________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Yours,Li Hua【答案】Dear Peter,How time flies!
