Two years ago, my 11-year-old son sat me down for a talk. “Mom, it’s time.” he said. “Hear me out: It’s time we got actual TV. And you need an iPhone.”
This funny conversation two years ago marked a shift in our relationship. Perhaps for the first time, I began to really listen to my son’s opinion about our home technology. Since his reasoning was sensible and his suggestions within budget, I took his advice and was pleasantly surprised with the results.
I’d known for a while that my son understands technology better than I do. On airplanes, he grabbed my phone to put it in airplane mode. He wired the speakers in our house. After something was stolen from our front yard, he picked out, set up, and now monitors our security camera. When my computer died, I took him shopping with me.
As a teenager now, he has a busy social life, with skateboarding, basketball, and online gaming with his friends. I see our time together decreasing and our shared interests shrinking. That’s why I jumped at the chance when a friend mentioned writing technology reviews. I’m a writer, but I’d need a partner who has more tech knowledge than me. When I presented the idea to my teen, he immediately accepted
It’s changed our relationship in surprising ways. Where he used to get annoyed quickly at my technical ignorance, he’s learned to be more patient and explain things to me in a way that I can convey to an unknowing audience. The parent-child dynamic is not only changed; it’s even slightly reversed — he’s leading me. I’m asking him for help and advice. My son has risen to the occasion. He’s taking it seriously, and to watch him mature in this way is an honor. As someone who’s not much of a reader, he now searches instruction book. Without any prompting, he’s even emailed and called, yes, made an actual phone call to customer service or tech support when sample products weren’t working as expected.
I never imagined being a tech reviewer, but it’s proved to be a valuable way to learn from, work with and enjoy time with my teen.
24. What did the writer think of her son’s advice
A. It was unaffordable. B. It was beyond reach.
C. It sounded reasonable. D. It sounded surprising.
25. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3
A. Prove her son’s better mastery of technology.
B. Describe their close parent-child relationship.
C. Give examples of her son’s interest in airplanes.
D. Express her satisfaction of her son’s timely help.
26 Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “reversed” in Paragraph 5
A. Unrealistic. B. Opposite. C. Negative. D. Common.
27. What makes the writer feel honored
A. Her son’s patience with their relationship.
B. Her son’s attitudes to some unknown audiences.
C. Her son’s growth and serious attitude to the work.
D. Her son’s desire to change the parent-child dynamic.

Fire has always been part of California’s landscape. But long before the disastrous forest fires of recent years, native American tribes(部落)held controlled burns each year. Those burns cleared out underbrush and encouraged new plant growth. Now, government officials have realized tackling the fire problem will mean bringing back “good fire”, much like California’s tribes once did.
When western settlers removed tribes from their land and banned tribal ceremonies, cultural burning disappeared. Instead, authorities focused on quickly putting out wildfires.
But what the authorities did only made California’s wildfire risk worse. Without regular burns, the landscape grew thick with plants that dry out every summer. These dry plants are kindling(引火物)for the fires that have recently destroyed California communities. Climate change and warming temperatures make those landscapes even easier to catch fire.
So, tribal leaders and government officials are forming new partnerships. There are hundreds of thousands of acres that need careful burning to reduce the risk of extreme wildfires. Tribes are eager to gain access to those ancestral lands to restore traditional burning. Before 1800, the tribes used low-grade fires to shape the landscape, encouraging certain plants to grow both for tribal use and to attract game.
The arrival of western settlers dramatically changed the ways of fire management. “They came with their concepts of being afraid of fire,” a tribal leader says. “They didn’t understand fire in the sense of a tool. And they didn’t understand its role to help generate the land. So they brought suppression(压制)”.
Tribal leaders have been reaching out to ecologists, researchers and fire agencies about the importance of their knowledge. In Northern California, the Karuk and Yurok tribes have partnered with the Forest Service to manage land for traditional values and wildfire management.
28. What have government officials realized about the native tribes
A. The tribes’ old practice is useful.
B. The tribes are causing more forest fires.
C. It’s impossible to prevent the tribes burning forests.
D. It’s necessary to remove the tribes from where they live.
29. What is the way western settlers deal with forest fires
A. Fire suppression. B. Reshaping land.
C. Cultural burning. D. Removing kindling.
30. What do the tribes think of fire
A. They think it threatening. B. They consider it as natural.
C. They think it can be beneficial. D. They consider it harmful to the land.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Western Settlers Brought Wrong Ideas of Fire Control
B. Wildfires Are Becoming Increasingly Serious in California
C. Native American Tribes Restore Their Traditional Ceremonies
D. California Looks to What Tribes Have Known to Manage Wildfires
D
In a global report of lake color, researchers estimate that roughly one-third of Earth’s lakes are blue. But, should average summer air temperatures rise by a few degrees, some of those clear waters could turn a cloudy green or brown, the Learn reports in the Sept. 28 Geophysical Research Letters.
The changing colors could change how people use those waters and offer clues about the stability of lake pared with blue lakes, green or brown lakes have more algae (藻类) and organic matter, says Xiao Yang, a hydrologist (水文专家) at Southern Methodist University.
Lakes in places with average summer air temperatures that were below 19° Celsius were more likely to be blue than lakes with warmer summers. That’s because warmer water helps algae bloom more, which changes the properties of the water.
Yang and colleagues used satellite photos from 2013 to 2020 to analyze the color of more than 85,000 lakes around the world. Because storms and seasons can temporarily affect a lake’s color, the researchers focused on the most frequent color observed for each lake over the seven-year period. The researchers also created an interactive online map that can be used to explore the colors of these lakes. The approach is “super cool,” the researchers say. These satellite data are “just so powerful.”
If some lakes do become less blue, people will probably lose some of the resources they have come to value, O’Reilly says, who is an ecologist at Illinois State University. Lakes are often used for drinking water, food or recreation. If the water has more algae, it could be unappealing for play or more costly to clean for drinking. But the color changes wouldn’t necessarily mean that the lakes are any less healthy. “Humans don’t value lots of algae in a lake, but if you’re a certain type of fish species, you might be like ‘this is great’” O’Reilly says.
32. What can we learn about the lakes’ color change according to the text
A. It is caused by water pollution. B. It does harm to the growth of algae.
C. It results from the temperature increase. D. It can disturb the stability of lake ecosystems.
33. How was the research conducted
A. By doing field investigation. B. By researching previous studies.
C. By analyzing long-term satellite data. D. By observing the daily color of the lakes.
34. Which word best describes O’Reilly’s attitude to the color change
A. Objective. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Favourable.
35. What’s the authors purpose in writing the text
A. To call on people to protect lakes. B. To introduce a new research method.
C. To present the outcome of a research. D. To provide solutions to lakes’ color change.

On a Sunday afternoon, Kiana French was having fun fishing with her father and younger sister, not knowing the next minute, they would struggle not to sink in the freezing water. Their 12-foot boat was taking in water little by little, and the wind was picking up. Her father, Gary French, hurried to operate the engine, while Kiana,16, was in the middle with Cierrah, her sister, frightened but still able to keep calm.
Kiana asked Cierrah to take off one of her cowboy boots, with which she got some of the water out. Hard as she tried, that little effort would not help stop the boat sinking. Moments later, the unthinkable happened. The boat was full of water and then it flipped over. Kiana and her sister were dumped in the water. Their father, who had had a surgery six months ago, managed not to be thrown into the water but seemed to have great pain in the chest due to the sudden change.
Kiana quickly put on her life jacket and saw Cierrah’s and her father’s life jackets floating away. She reacted quickly to get them back and held her sister onto the boat. They were so far out in the middle of the lake that they could not see the shore clearly. What’s worse.it was getting harder to stay above the waves. Their father swam over and hugged his two girls. Cierrah crying silently. Kiana heard her beloved sister murmur, “I can’t feel my feet.”
Kiana knew the only thing to do was to get to shore herself and find help. She looked up at her father, exchanging a concerned glance, turned round and swam as hard as she could towards the shore
Fighting against the strong currents and cold wind, she screamed for help at the top of her lungs every three minutes or so. C. It’s as important as the opening words.
20. What does the woman suggest a public speaker do during the speech
A. Show a good sense of humor.
B. Motivate the audience to act.
C. Meet challenges with courage.
【答案】18. C 19. A 20. B
【解析】
【原文】W: Good afternoon, everyone. I’m here to offer you some tips on public speaking. One of the worst mistakes you can make as a public speaker is talking too long. It doesn’t matter if your entire speech is good and the audience come away with information that will change their lives. If you talk too long, they will leave saying that speaker just wouldn’t quit. Don’t let this happen to you. Say what you have to say and sit down. Before you do, give them a well-thought-out closing. The last thing you say is generally what the audience remembers most. Just like your opening, your closing doesn’t have to be humorous. It could be challenging, thoughtful, or it could retell your point in a different way. Please, at some time during your talk, ask the audience to do something. Many a great talk goes no further than the walls of the meeting-room because the audience isn’t moved to action. If you haven’ t asked them to do something by now, the closing is your last chance.

26. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “reversed” in Paragraph 5
A. Unrealistic. B. Opposite. C. Negative. D. Common.
27. What makes the writer feel honored
A. Her son’s patience with their relationship.

B The tribes are causing more forest fires.

33 How was the research conducted
